1In the fourth year of King Darius, the word of the Lord came to Zechariah on the fourth day of the ninth month, which is Chislev.2Now the people of Bethel had sent Sharezer and Regem-melech and their men to entreat the favor of the Lord,3saying to the priests of the house of the Lord of hosts and the prophets, “Should I weep and abstain in the fifth month, as I have done for so many years?”4Then the word of the Lord of hosts came to me:5“Say to all the people of the land and the priests, ‘When you fasted and mourned in the fifth month and in the seventh, for these seventy years, was it for me that you fasted?6And when you eat and when you drink, do you not eat for yourselves and drink for yourselves?7Were not these the words that the Lord proclaimed by the former prophets, when Jerusalem was inhabited and prosperous, with her cities around her, and the South and the lowland were inhabited?’”8And the word of the Lord came to Zechariah, saying,9“Thus says the Lord of hosts, Render true judgments, show kindness and mercy to one another,10do not oppress the widow, the fatherless, the sojourner, or the poor, and let none of you devise evil against another in your heart.”11But they refused to pay attention and turned a stubborn shoulder and stopped their ears that they might not hear.*12They made their hearts diamond-hard lest they should hear the law and the words that the Lord of hosts had sent by his Spirit through the former prophets. Therefore great anger came from the Lord of hosts.13“As I* called, and they would not hear, so they called, and I would not hear,” says the Lord of hosts,14“and I scattered them with a whirlwind among all the nations that they had not known. Thus the land they left was desolate, so that no one went to and fro, and the pleasant land was made desolate.”

1Und es geschah im vierten Jahr des Königs Darius, da geschah des HERRN Wort zu Sacharja am vierten Tag des neunten Monats, im Kislew.2Und man sandte Bethel-Sarezer und Regem-Melech und seine Leute, um den HERRN anzuflehen3und die Priester am Hause des HERRN Zebaoth und die Propheten zu befragen: Muss ich immer noch im fünften Monat weinen und enthaltsam sein, wie ich es nun so viele Jahre getan habe?4Und des HERRN Zebaoth Wort geschah zu mir:5Sage allem Volk im Lande und den Priestern und sprich: Als ihr fastetet und Leid trugt im fünften und siebenten Monat diese siebzig Jahre lang, habt ihr da wirklich für mich gefastet?6Und wenn ihr esst und trinkt, esst und trinkt ihr da nicht für euch selbst?

7Ist’s nicht das, was der HERR durch die früheren Propheten predigen ließ, als Jerusalem bewohnt war und sicher samt seinen Städten ringsum und Leute im Südland und im Hügelland wohnten.8Und des HERRN Wort geschah zu Sacharja:9So sprach der HERR Zebaoth: Richtet recht, und ein jeder erweise seinem Bruder Güte und Barmherzigkeit,10und bedrückt nicht die Witwen, Waisen, Fremdlinge und Armen, und denke keiner gegen seinen Bruder etwas Arges in seinem Herzen!11Sie aber weigerten sich aufzumerken und kehrten mir störrisch den Rücken zu und verstopften ihre Ohren, dass sie nicht hörten,12und machten ihre Herzen hart wie Diamant, damit sie nicht hörten das Gesetz und die Worte, die der HERR Zebaoth durch seinen Geist sandte durch die früheren Propheten. Daher ist so großer Zorn vom HERRN Zebaoth gekommen.13Und es ist so ergangen: Gleichwie gepredigt wurde und sie nicht hörten, so wollte ich auch nicht hören, als sie riefen, spricht der HERR Zebaoth.14Darum habe ich sie zerstreut unter alle Völker, die sie nicht kannten, und das Land blieb verwüstet hinter ihnen liegen, sodass niemand mehr darin hin und her zog; so haben sie das liebliche Land zur Wüste gemacht.
