Atonement for Unsolved Murders

1 “If in the land that the Lord your God is giving you to possess someone is found slain, lying in the open country, and it is not known who killed him, 2 then your elders and your judges shall come out, and they shall measure the distance to the surrounding cities. 3 And the elders of the city that is nearest to the slain man shall take a heifer that has never been worked and that has not pulled in a yoke. 4 And the elders of that city shall bring the heifer down to a valley with running water, which is neither plowed nor sown, and shall break the heifer’s neck there in the valley. 5 Then the priests, the sons of Levi, shall come forward, for the Lord your God has chosen them to minister to him and to bless in the name of the Lord, and by their word every dispute and every assault shall be settled. 6 And all the elders of that city nearest to the slain man shall wash their hands over the heifer whose neck was broken in the valley, 7 and they shall testify, ‘Our hands did not shed this blood, nor did our eyes see it shed. 8 Accept atonement, O Lord, for your people Israel, whom you have redeemed, and do not set the guilt of innocent blood in the midst of your people Israel, so that their blood guilt be atoned for.’ 9 So you shall purge the guilt of innocent blood from your midst, when you do what is right in the sight of the Lord.

Marrying Female Captives

10 “When you go out to war against your enemies, and the Lord your God gives them into your hand and you take them captive, 11 and you see among the captives a beautiful woman, and you desire to take her to be your wife, 12 and you bring her home to your house, she shall shave her head and pare her nails. 13 And she shall take off the clothes in which she was captured and shall remain in your house and lament her father and her mother a full month. After that you may go in to her and be her husband, and she shall be your wife. 14 But if you no longer delight in her, you shall let her go where she wants. But you shall not sell her for money, nor shall you treat her as a slave, since you have humiliated her.

Inheritance Rights of the Firstborn

15 “If a man has two wives, the one loved and the other unloved, and both the loved and the unloved have borne him children, and if the firstborn son belongs to the unloved,* 16 then on the day when he assigns his possessions as an inheritance to his sons, he may not treat the son of the loved as the firstborn in preference to the son of the unloved, who is the firstborn, 17 but he shall acknowledge the firstborn, the son of the unloved, by giving him a double portion of all that he has, for he is the firstfruits of his strength. The right of the firstborn is his.

A Rebellious Son

18 “If a man has a stubborn and rebellious son who will not obey the voice of his father or the voice of his mother, and, though they discipline him, will not listen to them, 19 then his father and his mother shall take hold of him and bring him out to the elders of his city at the gate of the place where he lives, 20 and they shall say to the elders of his city, ‘This our son is stubborn and rebellious; he will not obey our voice; he is a glutton and a drunkard.’ 21 Then all the men of the city shall stone him to death with stones. So you shall purge the evil from your midst, and all Israel shall hear, and fear.

A Man Hanged on a Tree Is Cursed

22 “And if a man has committed a crime punishable by death and he is put to death, and you hang him on a tree, 23 his body shall not remain all night on the tree, but you shall bury him the same day, for a hanged man is cursed by God. You shall not defile your land that the Lord your God is giving you for an inheritance.

Sühnung eines Mordes von unbekannter Hand

1 Wenn man einen Erschlagenen findet in dem Lande, das dir der HERR, dein Gott, geben wird, es einzunehmen, und er liegt auf freiem Felde und man weiß nicht, wer ihn erschlagen hat, 2 so sollen deine Ältesten und Richter hinausgehen und den Weg abmessen von dem Erschlagenen bis zu den umliegenden Städten. 3 Welche Stadt am nächsten liegt, deren Älteste sollen eine junge Kuh nehmen, mit der man noch nicht gearbeitet und die noch nicht am Joch gezogen hat, 4 und sollen sie hinabführen in einen Talgrund, der weder bearbeitet noch besät ist, und dort im Talgrund ihr das Genick brechen. 5 Und die Priester, die Söhne Levi, sollen herzutreten, denn der HERR, dein Gott, hat sie erwählt, dass sie ihm dienen und in seinem Namen segnen, und nach ihrem Urteil sollen alle Sachen und alle Schäden gerichtet werden. 6 Und alle Ältesten der Stadt, die dem Erschlagenen am nächsten liegt, sollen ihre Hände waschen über der jungen Kuh, der im Talgrund das Genick gebrochen ist. 7 Und sie sollen anheben und sagen: Unsere Hände haben dies Blut nicht vergossen, und unsere Augen haben’s nicht gesehen. 8 Entsühne dein Volk Israel, das du, der HERR, erlöst hast; lege nicht das unschuldig vergossene Blut auf dein Volk Israel! So wird für sie die Blutschuld gesühnt sein. 9 So sollst du das unschuldig vergossene Blut aus deiner Mitte wegtun, dass du tust, was recht ist vor den Augen des HERRN.

Ehe mit kriegsgefangenen Frauen

10 Wenn du in einen Krieg ziehst gegen deine Feinde und der HERR, dein Gott, gibt sie dir in deine Hände, dass du Gefangene von ihnen wegführst, 11 und siehst unter den Gefangenen eine schöne Frau und gewinnst sie lieb, dass du sie zur Frau nimmst, 12 so führe sie in dein Haus und lass sie ihr Haar abscheren und ihre Nägel beschneiden 13 und die Kleider ablegen, in denen sie gefangen genommen wurde, und lass sie in deinem Hause sein und einen Monat lang ihren Vater und ihre Mutter beweinen. Danach geh zu ihr und nimm sie zur Ehe und lass sie deine Frau sein. 14 Wenn du aber kein Gefallen mehr an ihr hast, so sollst du sie gehen lassen, wohin sie will; du sollst sie aber nicht um Geld verkaufen oder als Sklavin behandeln, weil du zu ihr eingegangen bist.

Vom Recht des Erstgeborenen

15 Wenn jemand zwei Frauen hat, eine, die er lieb hat, und eine, die er nicht lieb hat, und beide ihm Kinder gebären, die Frau, die er lieb hat, und die ungeliebte, und der Erstgeborene ist von der ungeliebten Frau 16 und die Zeit kommt, dass er seinen Söhnen das Erbe austeile, so kann er nicht den Sohn der Frau, die er lieb hat, zum erstgeborenen Sohn machen vor dem erstgeborenen Sohn der ungeliebten; 17 sondern er soll den Sohn der ungeliebten Frau als den ersten Sohn anerkennen und ihm zwei Teile geben von allem, was vorhanden ist; denn dieser ist der Erstling seiner Kraft, und sein ist das Recht der Erstgeburt.

Todesstrafe für ungeratene Söhne

18 Wenn jemand einen widerspenstigen und ungehorsamen Sohn hat, der der Stimme seines Vaters und seiner Mutter nicht gehorcht und auch, wenn sie ihn züchtigen, ihnen nicht gehorchen will, 19 und wenn ihn Vater und Mutter ergreifen und zu den Ältesten der Stadt führen und zu dem Tor des Ortes 20 und zu den Ältesten der Stadt sagen: Dieser unser Sohn ist widerspenstig und ungehorsam und gehorcht unserer Stimme nicht und ist ein Prasser und Trunkenbold, 21 dann sollen ihn steinigen alle Leute seiner Stadt, dass er sterbe, und du sollst so das Böse aus deiner Mitte wegtun, dass ganz Israel aufhorche und sich fürchte.

Bestattung eines Hingerichteten

22 Wenn jemand eine Sünde getan hat, die des Todes würdig ist, und wird getötet und du hängst ihn an ein Holz, 23 so soll sein Leichnam nicht über Nacht an dem Holz bleiben, sondern du sollst ihn am selben Tage begraben – denn ein Aufgehängter ist verflucht bei Gott –, auf dass du dein Land nicht unrein machst, das dir der HERR, dein Gott, zum Erbe gibt.
