1“When you go out to war against your enemies, and see horses and chariots and an army larger than your own, you shall not be afraid of them, for the Lord your God is with you, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt.2And when you draw near to the battle, the priest shall come forward and speak to the people3and shall say to them, ‘Hear, O Israel, today you are drawing near for battle against your enemies: let not your heart faint. Do not fear or panic or be in dread of them,4for the Lord your God is he who goes with you to fight for you against your enemies, to give you the victory.’5Then the officers shall speak to the people, saying, ‘Is there any man who has built a new house and has not dedicated it? Let him go back to his house, lest he die in the battle and another man dedicate it.6And is there any man who has planted a vineyard and has not enjoyed its fruit? Let him go back to his house, lest he die in the battle and another man enjoy its fruit.7And is there any man who has betrothed a wife and has not taken her? Let him go back to his house, lest he die in the battle and another man take her.’8And the officers shall speak further to the people, and say, ‘Is there any man who is fearful and fainthearted? Let him go back to his house, lest he make the heart of his fellows melt like his own.’9And when the officers have finished speaking to the people, then commanders shall be appointed at the head of the people.10“When you draw near to a city to fight against it, offer terms of peace to it.11And if it responds to you peaceably and it opens to you, then all the people who are found in it shall do forced labor for you and shall serve you.12But if it makes no peace with you, but makes war against you, then you shall besiege it.13And when the Lord your God gives it into your hand, you shall put all its males to the sword,14but the women and the little ones, the livestock, and everything else in the city, all its spoil, you shall take as plunder for yourselves. And you shall enjoy the spoil of your enemies, which the Lord your God has given you.15Thus you shall do to all the cities that are very far from you, which are not cities of the nations here.16But in the cities of these peoples that the Lord your God is giving you for an inheritance, you shall save alive nothing that breathes,17but you shall devote them to complete destruction,* the Hittites and the Amorites, the Canaanites and the Perizzites, the Hivites and the Jebusites, as the Lord your God has commanded,18that they may not teach you to do according to all their abominable practices that they have done for their gods, and so you sin against the Lord your God.19“When you besiege a city for a long time, making war against it in order to take it, you shall not destroy its trees by wielding an axe against them. You may eat from them, but you shall not cut them down. Are the trees in the field human, that they should be besieged by you?20Only the trees that you know are not trees for food you may destroy and cut down, that you may build siegeworks against the city that makes war with you, until it falls.

1Wenn du in einen Krieg ziehst gegen deine Feinde und siehst Rosse und Wagen eines Kriegsvolks, das größer ist als du, so fürchte dich nicht vor ihnen; denn der HERR, dein Gott, der dich aus Ägyptenland geführt hat, ist mit dir.2Wenn ihr nun auszieht zum Kampf, so soll der Priester herzutreten und mit dem Volk reden3und zu ihnen sprechen: Israel, höre zu! Ihr zieht heute in den Kampf gegen eure Feinde. Euer Herz verzage nicht, fürchtet euch nicht und erschreckt nicht und lasst euch nicht grauen vor ihnen;4denn der HERR, euer Gott, geht mit euch, dass er für euch streite mit euren Feinden, um euch zu helfen.5Und die Amtleute sollen mit dem Volk reden und sagen: Wer ein neues Haus gebaut hat und hat’s noch nicht eingeweiht, der mache sich auf und kehre heim, auf dass er nicht sterbe im Krieg und ein anderer es einweihe.6Wer einen Weinberg gepflanzt hat und hat seine Früchte noch nicht genossen, der mache sich auf und kehre heim, dass er nicht im Kriege sterbe und ein anderer seine Früchte genieße.7Wer mit einem Mädchen verlobt ist und hat es noch nicht heimgeholt, der mache sich auf und kehre heim, dass er nicht im Krieg sterbe und ein anderer hole es heim.8Und die Amtleute sollen weiter mit dem Volk reden und sprechen: Wer sich fürchtet und ein verzagtes Herz hat, der mache sich auf und kehre heim, auf dass er nicht auch das Herz seiner Brüder feige mache, wie sein Herz ist.9Und wenn die Amtleute dies alles zu dem Volk geredet haben, so sollen sie Heerführer an die Spitze des Volks stellen.10Wenn du vor eine Stadt ziehst, um gegen sie zu kämpfen, so sollst du ihr zuerst den Frieden anbieten.11Antwortet sie dir friedlich und tut dir ihre Tore auf, so soll das ganze Volk, das darin gefunden wird, dir fronpflichtig sein und dir dienen.12Will sie aber nicht Frieden machen mit dir, sondern mit dir Krieg führen, so belagere sie.13Und wenn sie der HERR, dein Gott, dir in die Hand gibt, so sollst du alles, was männlich darin ist, mit der Schärfe des Schwerts schlagen.14Nur die Frauen, die Kinder und das Vieh und alles, was in der Stadt ist, die ganze Beute, sollst du unter dir austeilen und sollst essen von der Beute deiner Feinde, die dir der HERR, dein Gott, gegeben hat.15So sollst du mit allen Städten tun, die sehr fern von dir liegen und nicht zu den Städten dieser Völker hier gehören.16Aber in den Städten dieser Völker hier, die dir der HERR, dein Gott, zum Erbe geben wird, sollst du nichts leben lassen, was Odem hat,17sondern sollst an ihnen den Bann vollstrecken, nämlich an den Hetitern, Amoritern, Kanaanitern, Perisitern, Hiwitern und Jebusitern, wie dir der HERR, dein Gott, geboten hat,18damit sie euch nicht lehren, all die Gräuel zu tun, die sie im Dienst ihrer Götter treiben, und ihr euch so versündigt an dem HERRN, eurem Gott.19Wenn du vor einer Stadt lange Zeit liegen musst, gegen die du kämpfst, um sie zu erobern, so sollst du nicht die Axt an ihre Bäume legen und sie umhauen, denn du kannst davon essen; darum sollst du sie nicht fällen. Die Bäume auf dem Felde sind doch nicht Menschen, dass du sie belagern müsstest!20Die Bäume aber, von denen du weißt, dass man nicht davon isst, die darfst du verderben und umhauen und ein Bollwerk daraus bauen gegen die Stadt, die mit dir Krieg führt, bis sie fällt.
