1Now Jephthah the Gileadite was a mighty warrior, but he was the son of a prostitute. Gilead was the father of Jephthah.2And Gilead’s wife also bore him sons. And when his wife’s sons grew up, they drove Jephthah out and said to him, “You shall not have an inheritance in our father’s house, for you are the son of another woman.”3Then Jephthah fled from his brothers and lived in the land of Tob, and worthless fellows collected around Jephthah and went out with him.4After a time the Ammonites made war against Israel.5And when the Ammonites made war against Israel, the elders of Gilead went to bring Jephthah from the land of Tob.6And they said to Jephthah, “Come and be our leader, that we may fight against the Ammonites.”7But Jephthah said to the elders of Gilead, “Did you not hate me and drive me out of my father’s house? Why have you come to me now when you are in distress?”8And the elders of Gilead said to Jephthah, “That is why we have turned to you now, that you may go with us and fight against the Ammonites and be our head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.”9Jephthah said to the elders of Gilead, “If you bring me home again to fight against the Ammonites, and the Lord gives them over to me, I will be your head.”10And the elders of Gilead said to Jephthah, “The Lord will be witness between us, if we do not do as you say.”11So Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him head and leader over them. And Jephthah spoke all his words before the Lord at Mizpah.12Then Jephthah sent messengers to the king of the Ammonites and said, “What do you have against me, that you have come to me to fight against my land?”13And the king of the Ammonites answered the messengers of Jephthah, “Because Israel on coming up from Egypt took away my land, from the Arnon to the Jabbok and to the Jordan; now therefore restore it peaceably.”14Jephthah again sent messengers to the king of the Ammonites15and said to him, “Thus says Jephthah: Israel did not take away the land of Moab or the land of the Ammonites,16but when they came up from Egypt, Israel went through the wilderness to the Red Sea and came to Kadesh.17Israel then sent messengers to the king of Edom, saying, ‘Please let us pass through your land,’ but the king of Edom would not listen. And they sent also to the king of Moab, but he would not consent. So Israel remained at Kadesh.18“Then they journeyed through the wilderness and went around the land of Edom and the land of Moab and arrived on the east side of the land of Moab and camped on the other side of the Arnon. But they did not enter the territory of Moab, for the Arnon was the boundary of Moab.19Israel then sent messengers to Sihon king of the Amorites, king of Heshbon, and Israel said to him, ‘Please let us pass through your land to our country,’20but Sihon did not trust Israel to pass through his territory, so Sihon gathered all his people together and encamped at Jahaz and fought with Israel.21And the Lord, the God of Israel, gave Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel, and they defeated them. So Israel took possession of all the land of the Amorites, who inhabited that country.22And they took possession of all the territory of the Amorites from the Arnon to the Jabbok and from the wilderness to the Jordan.23So then the Lord, the God of Israel, dispossessed the Amorites from before his people Israel; and are you to take possession of them?24Will you not possess what Chemosh your god gives you to possess? And all that the Lord our God has dispossessed before us, we will possess.25Now are you any better than Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab? Did he ever contend against Israel, or did he ever go to war with them?26While Israel lived in Heshbon and its villages, and in Aroer and its villages, and in all the cities that are on the banks of the Arnon, 300 years, why did you not deliver them within that time?27I therefore have not sinned against you, and you do me wrong by making war on me. The Lord, the Judge, decide this day between the people of Israel and the people of Ammon.”28But the king of the Ammonites did not listen to the words of Jephthah that he sent to him.
Jephthah’s Tragic Vow
29Then the Spirit of the Lord was upon Jephthah, and he passed through Gilead and Manasseh and passed on to Mizpah of Gilead, and from Mizpah of Gilead he passed on to the Ammonites.30And Jephthah made a vow to the Lord and said, “If you will give the Ammonites into my hand,31then whatever* comes out from the doors of my house to meet me when I return in peace from the Ammonites shall be the Lord’s, and I will offer it* up for a burnt offering.”32So Jephthah crossed over to the Ammonites to fight against them, and the Lord gave them into his hand.33And he struck them from Aroer to the neighborhood of Minnith, twenty cities, and as far as Abel-keramim, with a great blow. So the Ammonites were subdued before the people of Israel.34Then Jephthah came to his home at Mizpah. And behold, his daughter came out to meet him with tambourines and with dances. She was his only child; besides her he had neither son nor daughter.35And as soon as he saw her, he tore his clothes and said, “Alas, my daughter! You have brought me very low, and you have become the cause of great trouble to me. For I have opened my mouth to the Lord, and I cannot take back my vow.”36And she said to him, “My father, you have opened your mouth to the Lord; do to me according to what has gone out of your mouth, now that the Lord has avenged you on your enemies, on the Ammonites.”37So she said to her father, “Let this thing be done for me: leave me alone two months, that I may go up and down on the mountains and weep for my virginity, I and my companions.”38So he said, “Go.” Then he sent her away for two months, and she departed, she and her companions, and wept for her virginity on the mountains.39And at the end of two months, she returned to her father, who did with her according to his vow that he had made. She had never known a man, and it became a custom in Israel40that the daughters of Israel went year by year to lament the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite four days in the year.

Er war der Sohn einer Prostituierten; sein Vater hieß Gilead.2Dieser Gilead hatte von seiner Ehefrau noch weitere Söhne, und als die heranwuchsen, jagten sie Jiftach fort und sagten: »Du bekommst nichts vom Erbe unseres Vaters, denn du stammst von einer anderen Frau.«3So musste Jiftach vor seinen Brüdern fliehen. Er ging ins Land Tob, und dort sammelte sich um ihn eine Schar von Männern, die nichts zu verlieren hatten. Mit ihnen unternahm er seine Streifzüge.4Einige Zeit danach fingen die Ammoniter mit Israel Krieg an.5Da gingen die Ältesten von Gilead ins Land Tob, um Jiftach zu Hilfe zu rufen.6Sie sagten zu ihm: »Komm und sei unser Anführer gegen die Ammoniter!«7Aber Jiftach erwiderte: »Denkt ihr nicht mehr daran, wie ihr mich verachtet und vom Erbe meines Vaters vertrieben habt? Und jetzt kommt ihr, wo ihr in Not seid?«8Sie antworteten: »Ja, wir wenden uns an dich, damit du mit uns in den Kampf gegen die Ammoniter ziehst. Du sollst auch Herrscher über alle Bewohner von Gilead werden.«9»Ihr wollt also sagen«, erwiderte Jiftach, »wenn der HERR mir den Sieg über die Ammoniter gibt, soll ich euer Herrscher werden?«10Die Ältesten erklärten: »Der HERR ist unser Zeuge: Genauso soll es geschehen.«11Daraufhin kam Jiftach mit und das Volk setzte ihn zu seinem Herrscher und Anführer ein. Jiftach ließ sich das alles am Heiligtum des HERRN in Mizpa bestätigen.
Jiftach verhandelt vergeblich mit den Ammonitern
12Jiftach schickte Boten zum König der Ammoniter und ließ ihm sagen: »Warum bist du in mein Land eingefallen? Haben wir Grund, miteinander Krieg zu führen?«13Der Ammoniterkönig gab den Boten die Antwort mit: »Die Israeliten haben mir mein Land weggenommen, als sie aus Ägypten hierher gekommen sind, das ganze Gebiet zwischen Arnon und Jabbok und im Westen bis an den Jordan. Gib mir das alles jetzt freiwillig zurück!«14Jiftach schickte die Boten noch einmal zum König der Ammoniter15und ließ ihm sagen: »So spricht Jiftach: Die Israeliten haben das Land der Moabiter und Ammoniter nicht weggenommen.16Nachdem sie aus Ägypten gezogen waren, wanderten sie durch die Wüste bis zum Schilfmeer und kamen nach Kadesch.17Von dort schickten sie Boten zum König von Edom und baten: ›Lass uns durch dein Land ziehen!‹ Aber er erlaubte es ihnen nicht. Genauso erging es ihnen mit dem König von Moab. Deshalb blieben die Israeliten in Kadesch.18Später umgingen sie das Gebiet der Edomiter und Moabiter auf dem Weg durch die Wüste. Sie kamen in das Gebiet östlich von Moab und lagerten jenseits des Arnonflusses, der die Grenze Moabs bildet; sie überschritten ihn nicht und betraten kein moabitisches Gebiet.19Von dort aus schickten sie Boten zum Amoriterkönig Sihon nach Heschbon und baten: ›Lass uns durch dein Land in unser Land ziehen!‹20Aber Sihon glaubte ihnen nicht, dass sie nur durchziehen wollten, sondern bot seine ganzen Kriegsleute gegen Israel auf. Er sammelte seine Truppen bei Jahaz und griff von dort aus die Israeliten an.21Der HERR aber, der Gott Israels, gab Sihon und alle seine Kriegsleute in die Hand der Israeliten. Sie besiegten die Amoriter und nahmen ihr Land in Besitz, das ganze Gebiet vom Arnon bis zum Jabbok und von der Wüste bis zum Jordan. Denn dort wohnten damals die Amoriter.23So hat sie nun also der HERR, der Gott Israels, vor seinem Volk aus ihrem Land vertrieben, und nun willst du uns dieses Land streitig machen?24Wenn dein Gott Kemosch jemand vor dir vertreibt, hältst du es für dein gutes Recht, sein Land in Besitz zu nehmen; und genauso beanspruchen wir das Land derer, die der HERR, unser Gott, vor uns ausgetrieben hat.25Nimm dir ein Beispiel am Moabiterkönig Balak, dem Sohn Zippors. Oder meinst du, du seist so viel bedeutender als er? Hat er jemals Krieg mit uns angefangen, um uns unser Gebiet streitig zu machen?26Seit 300 Jahren wohnen die Israeliten jetzt in Heschbon und Aroër und den zugehörigen Ortschaften und in den Städten am Arnonfluss. Warum habt ihr uns denn das Land während dieser langen Zeit nicht weggenommen?27Was meine Person angeht: Ich habe dir kein Unrecht getan; aber du begehst ein Unrecht an mir, wenn du ohne Ursache Krieg anfängst. Der HERR selbst ist Richter, er soll heute den Streit zwischen den Israeliten und den Ammonitern entscheiden!«
Jiftachs Gelübde und sein Sieg
28Der Ammoniterkönig ließ sich durch die Vorhaltungen Jiftachs nicht von seinen Kriegsplänen abbringen.29Da nahm der Geist des HERRN Besitz von Jiftach, und Jiftach durchzog das ganze Gebiet von Gilead und Manasse. Dann kehrte er nach Mizpa in Gilead zurück, um von dort in den Kampf gegen die Ammoniter zu ziehen.30Vorher legte er ein Gelübde ab und versprach dem HERRN: »Wenn du die Ammoniter in meine Hand gibst31und ich wohlbehalten nach Hause zurückkehre, soll das, was mir als Erstes aus der Tür meines Hauses entgegenkommt, dir gehören. Ich will es dir als Opfer auf deinem Altar verbrennen.«32Dann zog Jiftach in den Kampf gegen die Ammoniter und der HERR gab sie in seine Hand.33Jiftach brachte ihnen eine schwere Niederlage bei und nahm ihnen das Gebiet von Aroër bis nach Minnit und Abel-Keramim ab, insgesamt 20 Städte. So zwang der HERR die Ammoniter vor den Israeliten in die Knie.34Als nun Jiftach zu seinem Haus nach Mizpa zurückkehrte, wer kam da aus der Tür? Seine Tochter, seine Einzige! Er hatte außer ihr keine Kinder. Sie trat aus dem Haus und kam ihm entgegen, dabei tanzte sie und schlug das Tamburin.35Als er sie sah, zerriss er sein Gewand und rief: »Ach, meine Tochter, du stürzt mich in tiefstes Leid! Dass du es sein musst! Was für einen Schmerz fügst du mir zu! Ich habe dem HERRN mein Wort gegeben und kann es nicht zurücknehmen.«36Sie aber sagte: »Mein Vater, wenn es so ist, dann tu an mir, was du nun einmal ausgesprochen hast. Der HERR hat dir ja auch den Sieg über deine Feinde, die Ammoniter, geschenkt.«37Dann fügte sie hinzu: »Gewähre mir nur eine Bitte! Lass mich noch zwei Monate leben. Ich möchte auf die Hügel dort unten gehen und mit meinen Freundinnen darüber weinen, dass ich unverheiratet sterben muss.«38»Geh nur«, sagte ihr Vater und gab ihr zwei Monate Zeit. So ging sie mit ihren Freundinnen auf die Hügel, um zu weinen.39Als die Frist verstrichen war, kehrte sie zu ihrem Vater zurück, und er tat an ihr, was er dem HERRN versprochen hatte. Sie war noch eine unberührte Jungfrau, als sie starb. Daraus entstand der Brauch in Israel,40dass die jungen Frauen einmal in jedem Jahr hinausgehen und vier Tage lang die Tochter Jiftachs aus Gilead beweinen.
