Jesaja 10 | English Standard Version

1 Woe to those who decree iniquitous decrees, and the writers who keep writing oppression, 2 to turn aside the needy from justice and to rob the poor of my people of their right, that widows may be their spoil, and that they may make the fatherless their prey! 3 What will you do on the day of punishment, in the ruin that will come from afar? To whom will you flee for help, and where will you leave your wealth? 4 Nothing remains but to crouch among the prisoners or fall among the slain. For all this his anger has not turned away, and his hand is stretched out still.

Judgment on Arrogant Assyria

5 Woe to Assyria, the rod of my anger; the staff in their hands is my fury! 6 Against a godless nation I send him, and against the people of my wrath I command him, to take spoil and seize plunder, and to tread them down like the mire of the streets. 7 But he does not so intend, and his heart does not so think; but it is in his heart to destroy, and to cut off nations not a few; 8 for he says: “Are not my commanders all kings? 9 Is not Calno like Carchemish? Is not Hamath like Arpad? Is not Samaria like Damascus? 10 As my hand has reached to the kingdoms of the idols, whose carved images were greater than those of Jerusalem and Samaria, 11 shall I not do to Jerusalem and her idols as I have done to Samaria and her images?” 12 When the Lord has finished all his work on Mount Zion and on Jerusalem, he* will punish the speech* of the arrogant heart of the king of Assyria and the boastful look in his eyes. 13 For he says: “By the strength of my hand I have done it, and by my wisdom, for I have understanding; I remove the boundaries of peoples, and plunder their treasures; like a bull I bring down those who sit on thrones. 14 My hand has found like a nest the wealth of the peoples; and as one gathers eggs that have been forsaken, so I have gathered all the earth; and there was none that moved a wing or opened the mouth or chirped.” 15 Shall the axe boast over him who hews with it, or the saw magnify itself against him who wields it? As if a rod should wield him who lifts it, or as if a staff should lift him who is not wood! 16 Therefore the Lord God of hosts will send wasting sickness among his stout warriors, and under his glory a burning will be kindled, like the burning of fire. 17 The light of Israel will become a fire, and his Holy One a flame, and it will burn and devour his thorns and briers in one day. 18 The glory of his forest and of his fruitful land the Lord will destroy, both soul and body, and it will be as when a sick man wastes away. 19 The remnant of the trees of his forest will be so few that a child can write them down.

The Remnant of Israel Will Return

20 In that day the remnant of Israel and the survivors of the house of Jacob will no more lean on him who struck them, but will lean on the Lord, the Holy One of Israel, in truth. 21 A remnant will return, the remnant of Jacob, to the mighty God. 22 For though your people Israel be as the sand of the sea, only a remnant of them will return. Destruction is decreed, overflowing with righteousness. 23 For the Lord God of hosts will make a full end, as decreed, in the midst of all the earth. 24 Therefore thus says the Lord God of hosts: “O my people, who dwell in Zion, be not afraid of the Assyrians when they strike with the rod and lift up their staff against you as the Egyptians did. 25 For in a very little while my fury will come to an end, and my anger will be directed to their destruction. 26 And the Lord of hosts will wield against them a whip, as when he struck Midian at the rock of Oreb. And his staff will be over the sea, and he will lift it as he did in Egypt. 27 And in that day his burden will depart from your shoulder, and his yoke from your neck; and the yoke will be broken because of the fat.”* 28 He has come to Aiath; he has passed through Migron; at Michmash he stores his baggage; 29 they have crossed over the pass; at Geba they lodge for the night; Ramah trembles; Gibeah of Saul has fled. 30 Cry aloud, O daughter of Gallim! Give attention, O Laishah! O poor Anathoth! 31 Madmenah is in flight; the inhabitants of Gebim flee for safety. 32 This very day he will halt at Nob; he will shake his fist at the mount of the daughter of Zion, the hill of Jerusalem. 33 Behold, the Lord God of hosts will lop the boughs with terrifying power; the great in height will be hewn down, and the lofty will be brought low. 34 He will cut down the thickets of the forest with an axe, and Lebanon will fall by the Majestic One.

Anklage gegen die Unterdrücker

1 Weh denen, die ihre Macht missbrauchen, um Verordnungen zu erlassen, die Menschen ins Unglück stürzen! 2 Sie bringen die Armen und Schwachen in meinem Volk um ihr Recht und plündern die Witwen und Waisen aus. 3 Der Tag des Gerichts kommt gewiss und das Unwetter aus der Ferne wird euch mit Sicherheit erreichen. Was wollt ihr dann tun? Zu wem wollt ihr fliehen? Wo wollt ihr dann eure Reichtümer lassen? 4 Ihr habt nur die Wahl, ob ihr tot oder gefangen sein wollt! Trotzdem legt Gottes Zorn sich nicht, noch ist seine Hand drohend erhoben.

Assyrien geht zu weit!

5 Der HERR sagt: »Jetzt bekommt es Assyrien mit mir zu tun! Ich habe es benutzt, um mein Strafgericht zu vollziehen. Assyrien war der Stock, mit dem ich meinen Zorn zu fühlen gab. 6 Ich habe es gesandt, um ein Volk zu bestrafen, das sich von mir losgesagt und meinen Zorn herausgefordert hat. Ich habe Assyrien erlaubt, dieses Volk zu berauben und auszuplündern und es zu zertreten wie Straßendreck. 7 Aber der König von Assyrien wollte mehr, er schmiedete seine eigenen Pläne. Vernichten wollte er, ganze Völker ausrotten, so viele wie möglich. 8 Er sagte sich: ›Alle Befehlshaber meiner Truppen sind so mächtig wie Könige. 9 Eine Stadt nach der anderen habe ich erobert: Kalne und Karkemisch, Hamat und Arpad, Samaria und Damaskus. 10 Mit meiner Macht habe ich Königreiche unterworfen, die mehr Götter und Götterbilder haben als Jerusalem und Samaria. 11 Ich habe Samaria und seine Götter vernichtet. Und ausgerechnet Jerusalem und seine Götterbilder sollten diesem Schicksal entgehen?‹« 12 Aber der Herr sagt: »Erst will ich zu Ende führen, was ich gegen Jerusalem und den Zionsberg im Sinn habe. Dann werde ich mit dem König von Assyrien abrechnen, mit seiner überheblichen Selbstherrlichkeit und dem Hochmut, mit dem er auf andere herabsieht. 13 Dieser König hat es gewagt, zu sagen: ›Aus eigener Kraft habe ich das alles getan, durch meine Klugheit habe ich es fertiggebracht. Die Grenzen zwischen den Völkern habe ich beseitigt, ihre Vorräte geplündert und ihre Könige vom Thron gestoßen wie ein Stier.* 14 Wie jemand ein Vogelnest ausnimmt, so habe ich die Schätze der Völker genommen. Wie jemand die Eier einsammelt, die der Vogel verlassen hat, so habe ich alle Länder eingesammelt. Da war keiner, der mit den Flügeln nach mir schlug, keiner, der den Schnabel öffnete und einen Piep von sich gab.‹« 15 Aber der HERR sagt: »Kann die Axt etwa angeben gegenüber dem, der sie gebraucht? Oder kann die Säge sich für wichtiger halten als den Zimmermann? Das wäre ja, als ob der Stock den schwänge, der ihn erhebt, als ob das tote Stück Holz den Mann bewegte!« 16 Darum wird der HERR, der Herrscher über die ganze Welt,* das reiche, satte Assyrien zum Hungerland machen. Unter seiner Pracht schwelt ein Brand, der alles in Flammen aufgehen lässt. 17 Der heilige Gott, das Licht Israels, wird zum Feuer, das die Dornen und Disteln ergreift und an einem einzigen Tag verzehrt. 18 Die prächtigen Wälder und Obstgärten vernichtet es mit Stumpf und Stiel. Assyrien wird dahinsiechen wie ein Sterbenskranker. 19 Von seinen Wäldern werden nur ein paar Bäume übrig bleiben, so wenige, dass ein Kind sie zählen kann.

Nur wenige bleiben übrig

20 Es kommt eine Zeit, da wird der Rest Israels, die Überlebenden der Nachkommen Jakobs, sich nicht mehr auf Assyrien stützen, den Stock, der sie geschlagen hat. Auf den HERRN werden sie sich stützen, an den heiligen Gott Israels werden sie sich halten und ihm treu bleiben. 21 Ein Rest wird zurückkehren; was übrig geblieben ist von den Nachkommen Jakobs, kehrt um zum starken Gott. 22 Israel, selbst wenn dein Volk so zahlreich wäre wie der Sand am Meer, nur ein kleiner Rest wird zurückkehren. Dein Untergang ist beschlossene Sache; er kommt wie eine Flut und verschafft dem Recht Geltung. 23 Der HERR, der Herrscher über die ganze Welt, ist fest entschlossen, dich zu vernichten vor den Augen aller Völker.

Keine Angst vor Assyrien!

24 Der HERR, der Herrscher über die ganze Welt, sagt zu seinem Volk, das auf dem Zionsberg wohnt: »Habt keine Angst vor Assyrien, auch wenn es den Stock über euch schwingt und euch schlägt, wie es früher die Ägypter taten. 25 Nur noch einen ganz kleinen Augenblick, dann kehrt sich mein Zorn von euch ab und wendet sich gegen Assyrien. 26 Dann werde ich, der Herrscher der Welt,* strafend die Geißel über die Assyrer schwingen, so wie ich damals am Rabenfelsen auf die Midianiter eingeschlagen habe. Ich werde meinen Stock über das Meer ausstrecken, wie ich es gegen die Ägypter getan habe. 27 Wenn die Zeit gekommen ist, dann wird die Last Assyriens von euren Schultern gleiten und sein Joch von eurem Nacken gerissen.«*

Der Feind rückt auf Jerusalem zu

28 Die Assyrer überfallen Aja, sie ziehen durch Migron, lassen ihren Tross in Michmas, 29 marschieren durch die Talschlucht, um in Geba zu übernachten. Rama zittert vor Angst, Gibea, die Stadt Sauls, ergreift die Flucht. 30 Schrei gellend, Gallim! Lausche, Lajescha! Antworte,* Anatot! 31 Madmena flieht, die Bewohner von Gebim laufen um ihr Leben. 32 Schon steht der Feind in Nob und streckt seine Hand aus nach Jerusalem und dem Zionsberg! 33 Seht doch, wie der HERR, der Herrscher über die ganze Welt, mit erschreckender Gewalt die Äste von den Bäumen schlägt! Die größten Bäume werden gefällt, die hochragenden niedrig gemacht. 34 Das Dickicht des Waldes wird mit der Axt gelichtet, die Pracht des Libanons sinkt zu Boden.
