1Then he commanded the steward of his house, “Fill the men’s sacks with food, as much as they can carry, and put each man’s money in the mouth of his sack,2and put my cup, the silver cup, in the mouth of the sack of the youngest, with his money for the grain.” And he did as Joseph told him.3As soon as the morning was light, the men were sent away with their donkeys.4They had gone only a short distance from the city. Now Joseph said to his steward, “Up, follow after the men, and when you overtake them, say to them, ‘Why have you repaid evil for good?*5Is it not from this that my lord drinks, and by this that he practices divination? You have done evil in doing this.’”6When he overtook them, he spoke to them these words.7They said to him, “Why does my lord speak such words as these? Far be it from your servants to do such a thing!8Behold, the money that we found in the mouths of our sacks we brought back to you from the land of Canaan. How then could we steal silver or gold from your lord’s house?9Whichever of your servants is found with it shall die, and we also will be my lord’s servants.”10He said, “Let it be as you say: he who is found with it shall be my servant, and the rest of you shall be innocent.”11Then each man quickly lowered his sack to the ground, and each man opened his sack.12And he searched, beginning with the eldest and ending with the youngest. And the cup was found in Benjamin’s sack.13Then they tore their clothes, and every man loaded his donkey, and they returned to the city.14When Judah and his brothers came to Joseph’s house, he was still there. They fell before him to the ground.15Joseph said to them, “What deed is this that you have done? Do you not know that a man like me can indeed practice divination?”16And Judah said, “What shall we say to my lord? What shall we speak? Or how can we clear ourselves? God has found out the guilt of your servants; behold, we are my lord’s servants, both we and he also in whose hand the cup has been found.”17But he said, “Far be it from me that I should do so! Only the man in whose hand the cup was found shall be my servant. But as for you, go up in peace to your father.”18Then Judah went up to him and said, “Oh, my lord, please let your servant speak a word in my lord’s ears, and let not your anger burn against your servant, for you are like Pharaoh himself.19My lord asked his servants, saying, ‘Have you a father, or a brother?’20And we said to my lord, ‘We have a father, an old man, and a young brother, the child of his old age. His brother is dead, and he alone is left of his mother’s children, and his father loves him.’21Then you said to your servants, ‘Bring him down to me, that I may set my eyes on him.’22We said to my lord, ‘The boy cannot leave his father, for if he should leave his father, his father would die.’23Then you said to your servants, ‘Unless your youngest brother comes down with you, you shall not see my face again.’24“When we went back to your servant my father, we told him the words of my lord.25And when our father said, ‘Go again, buy us a little food,’26we said, ‘We cannot go down. If our youngest brother goes with us, then we will go down. For we cannot see the man’s face unless our youngest brother is with us.’27Then your servant my father said to us, ‘You know that my wife bore me two sons.28One left me, and I said, “Surely he has been torn to pieces,” and I have never seen him since.29If you take this one also from me, and harm happens to him, you will bring down my gray hairs in evil to Sheol.’30“Now therefore, as soon as I come to your servant my father, and the boy is not with us, then, as his life is bound up in the boy’s life,31as soon as he sees that the boy is not with us, he will die, and your servants will bring down the gray hairs of your servant our father with sorrow to Sheol.32For your servant became a pledge of safety for the boy to my father, saying, ‘If I do not bring him back to you, then I shall bear the blame before my father all my life.’33Now therefore, please let your servant remain instead of the boy as a servant to my lord, and let the boy go back with his brothers.34For how can I go back to my father if the boy is not with me? I fear to see the evil that would find my father.”

1Luego él ordenó al que estaba a cargo de su casa, diciendo: Llena de comida los costales de estos hombres, tanto como puedan llevar, y coloca la plata de cada uno en la boca de su costal.2Y coloca mi copa, la copa de plata, en la boca del costal del menor, con la plata de su grano. E hizo conforme a la palabra que había hablado José.3Cuando rayó el alba, fueron despedidos aquellos varones, ellos y sus asnos.4Salieron ellos de la ciudad, y no se habían alejado, cuando José dijo al que estaba a cargo de su casa: Levántate y persigue a esos hombres, y cuando los alcances, diles: ¿Por qué habéis pagado mal por bien?5¿No es ésta en la cual bebe mi señor, y con lo que suele adivinar? Habéis obrado mal en lo que hicisteis.6Así, los alcanzó y les habló estas palabras.7Y ellos le dijeron: ¿Por qué habla mi señor tales cosas? ¡Lejos sea de tus siervos hacer cosa semejante!8He aquí, la plata que hallamos en la boca de nuestros costales, te la volvimos a traer desde la tierra de Canaán, ¿cómo, pues, hurtaríamos de la casa de tu señor plata u oro?9Aquel de tus siervos en quien sea hallada, que muera, y nosotros también seremos esclavos de mi señor.10Y él dijo: Sea ahora conforme a vuestras palabras, aquél en quien se halle llegará a ser mi esclavo, y vosotros seréis inocentes.11Y se apresuraron, y bajando cada uno su costal a tierra, cada cual abrió su costal.12Él, pues, comenzó a registrar por el mayor y terminó con el menor, y la copa fue hallada en el costal de Benjamín.13Entonces ellos se rasgaron las vestiduras, y cada uno cargó su asno y regresaron a la ciudad.14Y llegaron Judá y sus hermanos a casa de José, y él estaba aún allí, y cayeron a tierra ante él.15Y José les dijo: ¿Qué acción es esta que habéis hecho? ¿No sabéis que un hombre como yo es capaz de adivinar?16Entonces dijo Judá: ¿Qué diremos a mi señor? ¿Qué hablaremos? ¿Cómo nos justificaremos? ’Elohim ha descubierto la iniquidad de tus siervos. He aquí, somos esclavos de mi señor, nosotros, y también aquél en cuya mano fue hallada la copa.17Pero él dijo: Lejos de mí el hacer esto, el hombre en cuya mano fue hallada la copa, él será mi esclavo. Vosotros subid en paz a vuestro padre.18Entonces Judá se acercó a él, y dijo: ¡Ay, señor mío! Te ruego que hable tu siervo una palabra a oídos de mi señor, y no se encienda tu ira contra tu siervo, porque tú eres como el mismo Faraón.19Mi señor ha preguntado a sus siervos, diciendo: ¿Tenéis padre o hermano?20Y nosotros dijimos a mi señor: Tenemos un padre anciano, y un muchacho pequeño que le nació en su vejez, pues su hermano murió, sólo él quedó de su madre, y su padre lo ama.21Y dijiste a tus siervos: Hacedlo bajar para que lo vea.22Entonces nosotros dijimos a mi señor: El muchacho no puede abandonar a su padre, porque si lo abandonara, su padre moriría.23Y dijiste a tus siervos: Si vuestro hermano menor no baja con vosotros, no veréis más mi rostro.24Y aconteció que cuando subimos adonde mi padre, tu siervo, le referimos las palabras de mi señor.25Y nuestro padre dijo: Volved a comprar para nosotros un poco de alimento.26Pero nosotros dijimos: No podemos bajar. Si nuestro hermano menor va con nosotros, bajaremos, porque no podremos ver el rostro de aquel hombre si no está con nosotros nuestro hermano menor.27Entonces tu siervo, mi padre, nos dijo: Vosotros mismos sabéis que mi mujer me dio a luz dos.28El uno salió de mi lado, y dije: Ciertamente fue despedazado. Y hasta ahora no lo he vuelto a ver.29Y si tomáis también a éste de mi presencia y le sucede alguna desgracia, haréis descender mis canas con maldad al Seol.30Y ahora, cuando llegue a tu siervo, mi padre, y el muchacho no esté con nosotros, como su alma está ligada al alma de él,31sucederá que cuando vea que el muchacho no está, morirá, y tus siervos habrán hecho descender con dolor al Seol las canas de tu siervo, nuestro padre.32Porque yo, tu siervo, he quedado como fiador del muchacho ante mi padre, diciendo: Si no te lo traigo, sea pecador ante mi padre todos los días.33Y ahora, te ruego que tu siervo quede en lugar del joven por esclavo de mi señor, y el joven suba con sus hermanos.34Porque ¿cómo subiré yo hasta mi padre si el joven no está conmigo? ¡No vea el mal que le sobrevendrá a mi padre!
