Hosea 1

New International Version

from Biblica
1 The word of the Lord that came to Hosea son of Beeri during the reigns of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz and Hezekiah, kings of Judah, and during the reign of Jeroboam son of Joash king of Israel:

Hosea’s wife and children

2 When the Lord began to speak through Hosea, the Lord said to him, ‘Go, marry a promiscuous woman and have children with her, for like an adulterous wife this land is guilty of unfaithfulness to the Lord.’ 3 So he married Gomer daughter of Diblaim, and she conceived and bore him a son. 4 Then the Lord said to Hosea, ‘Call him Jezreel, because I will soon punish the house of Jehu for the massacre at Jezreel, and I will put an end to the kingdom of Israel. 5 In that day I will break Israel’s bow in the Valley of Jezreel.’ 6 Gomer conceived again and gave birth to a daughter. Then the Lord said to Hosea, ‘Call her Lo-Ruhamah,[1] for I will no longer show love to Israel, that I should at all forgive them. 7 Yet I will show love to Judah; and I will save them – not by bow, sword or battle, or by horses and horsemen, but I, the Lord their God, will save them.’ 8 After she had weaned Lo-Ruhamah, Gomer had another son. 9 Then the Lord said, ‘Call him Lo-Ammi,[2] for you are not my people, and I am not your God.[3] 10 ‘Yet the Israelites will be like the sand on the seashore, which cannot be measured or counted. In the place where it was said to them, “You are not my people”, they will be called “children of the living God”. 11 The people of Judah and the people of Israel will come together; they will appoint one leader and will come up out of the land, for great will be the day of Jezreel.[4]

Hosea 1

English Standard Version

from Crossway
1 The word of the Lord that came to Hosea, the son of Beeri, in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam the son of Joash, king of Israel. (2Ki 14:23; 2Ki 15:1; Isa 1:1; Am 1:1; Mic 1:1)

Hosea’s Wife and Children

2 When the Lord first spoke through Hosea, the Lord said to Hosea, “Go, take to yourself a wife of whoredom and have children of whoredom, for the land commits great whoredom by forsaking the Lord.” (Eze 16:15; Ho 2:4; Ho 2:5; Ho 3:1) 3 So he went and took Gomer, the daughter of Diblaim, and she conceived and bore him a son. 4 And the Lord said to him, “Call his name Jezreel, for in just a little while I will punish the house of Jehu for the blood of Jezreel, and I will put an end to the kingdom of the house of Israel. (2Ki 10:11; Am 7:9) 5 And on that day I will break the bow of Israel in the Valley of Jezreel.” (Jos 17:16; Jud 6:33; 2Ki 15:29) 6 She conceived again and bore a daughter. And the Lord said to him, “Call her name No Mercy,[1] for I will no more have mercy on the house of Israel, to forgive them at all. (2Ki 17:6; 2Ki 17:23; Ho 1:9; Ho 2:1; Ho 2:4; Ho 2:23; Ro 9:25; 1Pe 2:10) 7 But I will have mercy on the house of Judah, and I will save them by the Lord their God. I will not save them by bow or by sword or by war or by horses or by horsemen.” (2Ki 19:35; Ho 2:18; Ho 11:12; Zec 4:6; Zec 9:10) 8 When she had weaned No Mercy, she conceived and bore a son. 9 And the Lord said, “Call his name Not My People,[2] for you are not my people, and I am not your God.”[3] (Le 26:12; Ho 1:4; Ho 1:6; Ho 2:23) 10 [4] Yet the number of the children of Israel shall be like the sand of the sea, which cannot be measured or numbered. And in the place where it was said to them, “You are not my people,” it shall be said to them, “Children[5] of the living God.” (Ge 13:16; Ge 22:17; De 14:1; Jos 3:10; Ps 42:2; Isa 62:4; Eze 36:10; Eze 36:37; Ho 1:9; Ro 9:26; 2Co 6:18) 11 And the children of Judah and the children of Israel shall be gathered together, and they shall appoint for themselves one head. And they shall go up from the land, for great shall be the day of Jezreel. (Isa 11:12; Jer 3:18; Jer 50:4; Eze 34:23; Eze 37:16; Ho 3:5; Zec 10:6)
