Psalm 83

New International Reader’s Version

from Biblica

A song. A psalm of Asaph.

1 God, don’t remain silent. Don’t refuse to listen. Do something, God. 2 See how your enemies are growling like dogs. See how they are rising up against you. 3 They make clever plans against your people. They make evil plans against those you love. 4 ‘Come’, they say. ‘Let’s destroy that whole nation. Then the name of Israel won’t be remembered anymore.’ 5 All of them agree on the evil plans they have made. They join forces against you. 6 Their forces include the people of Edom, Ishmael, Moab and Hagar. 7 They also include the people of Byblos, Ammon, Amalek, Philistia and Tyre. 8 Even Assyria has joined them to give strength to the people of Moab and Ammon. 9 Do to them what you did to the people of Midian. Do to them what you did to Sisera and Jabin at the River Kishon. 10 Sisera and Jabin died near the town of Endor. Their bodies were left on the ground like human waste. 11 Do to the nobles of your enemies what you did to Oreb and Zeeb. Do to all their princes what you did to Zebah and Zalmunna. 12 They said, ‘Let’s take over the grasslands that belong to God.’ 13 My God, make them like straw that the wind blows away. Make them like tumbleweed. 14 Destroy them as fire burns up a forest. Destroy them as a flame sets mountains on fire. 15 Chase them with your mighty winds. Terrify them with your storm. 16 LORD, put them to shame so that they will seek you. 17 May they always be filled with terror and shame. May they die in dishonour. 18 May you, the LORD, let your enemies know who you are. You alone are the Most High God over the whole earth.

Psalm 83

English Standard Version

from Crossway

O God, Do Not Keep Silence

1 A Song. A Psalm of Asaph. O God, do not keep silence; do not hold your peace or be still, O God! (Ps 28:1; Ps 50:1) 2 For behold, your enemies make an uproar; those who hate you have raised their heads. (Jud 8:28; Ps 2:1) 3 They lay crafty plans against your people; they consult together against your treasured ones. (Ne 4:8; Ps 27:5; Ps 31:20) 4 They say, “Come, let us wipe them out as a nation; let the name of Israel be remembered no more!” (Es 3:6; Ps 74:8; Jer 48:2) 5 For they conspire with one accord; against you they make a covenant— 6 the tents of Edom and the Ishmaelites, Moab and the Hagrites, (Ge 25:12; 1Ch 5:10; 2Ch 20:10; Ps 137:7) 7 Gebal and Ammon and Amalek, Philistia with the inhabitants of Tyre; (Jos 13:5; 1Sa 4:1; 1Sa 15:2; Ps 83:6; Eze 27:3; Am 1:6; Am 1:9) 8 Asshur also has joined them; they are the strong arm of the children of Lot. (De 2:9; De 2:19; 2Ki 15:19) 9 Do to them as you did to Midian, as to Sisera and Jabin at the river Kishon, (Nu 31:7; Jud 4:7; Jud 4:15; Jud 4:24; Jud 5:21; Isa 9:4) 10 who were destroyed at En-dor, who became dung for the ground. (Jos 17:11; 1Sa 28:7; Job 20:7) 11 Make their nobles like Oreb and Zeeb, all their princes like Zebah and Zalmunna, (Jud 7:25; Jud 8:3; Jud 8:5) 12 who said, “Let us take possession for ourselves of the pastures of God.” (2Ch 20:11) 13 O my God, make them like whirling dust,[1] like chaff before the wind. (Job 13:25; Job 21:18; Ps 1:4; Isa 17:13) 14 As fire consumes the forest, as the flame sets the mountains ablaze, (De 32:22; Isa 9:18; Isa 10:16) 15 so may you pursue them with your tempest and terrify them with your hurricane! (Job 9:17) 16 Fill their faces with shame, that they may seek your name, O Lord. (Job 10:15; Ps 35:4; Ps 35:26) 17 Let them be put to shame and dismayed forever; let them perish in disgrace, (Ps 35:4) 18 that they may know that you alone, whose name is the Lord, are the Most High over all the earth. (Ex 6:3; Ps 9:2; Ps 18:13; Ps 59:13; Ps 97:9)
