1Das ist gewisslich wahr: Wenn jemand ein Bischofsamt[1] erstrebt, begehrt er eine hohe Aufgabe. (Apg 20,28; Tit 1,5)2Ein Bischof aber soll untadelig sein, Mann einer einzigen Frau, nüchtern, besonnen, würdig, gastfrei, geschickt im Lehren,3kein Säufer, nicht gewalttätig, sondern gütig, nicht streitsüchtig, nicht geldgierig,4einer, der seinem eigenen Haus gut vorsteht und gehorsame Kinder hat, in aller Ehrbarkeit.5Denn wenn jemand seinem eigenen Haus nicht vorzustehen weiß, wie soll er für die Gemeinde Gottes sorgen?6Er soll kein Neugetaufter sein, damit er sich nicht aufblase und dem Urteil des Teufels verfalle.7Er muss aber auch einen guten Ruf haben bei denen, die draußen sind, damit er nicht geschmäht werde und sich nicht fange in der Schlinge des Teufels.8Desgleichen sollen die Diakone ehrbar sein, nicht doppelzüngig, keine Säufer, nicht schändlichen Gewinn suchen; (Apg 6,3; Phil 1,1)9sie sollen das Geheimnis des Glaubens mit reinem Gewissen bewahren. (1Tim 1,19)10Und man soll sie zuvor prüfen, und wenn sie untadelig sind, sollen sie den Dienst versehen.11Desgleichen sollen die Frauen ehrbar sein, nicht verleumderisch, nüchtern, treu in allen Dingen. (Tit 2,3)12Die Diakone sollen ein jeder der Mann einer einzigen Frau sein und ihren Kindern und ihrem eigenen Haus gut vorstehen.13Welche aber ihren Dienst gut versehen, die erwerben sich selbst ein gutes Ansehen und viel Freimut im Glauben an Christus Jesus.
Das Geheimnis des Glaubens
14Dies schreibe ich dir und hoffe, bald zu dir zu kommen;15wenn ich aber erst später komme, sollst du wissen, wie man sich verhalten soll im Hause Gottes, welches ist die Gemeinde des lebendigen Gottes, ein Pfeiler und eine Grundfeste der Wahrheit. (Eph 2,19)16Und groß ist, wie jedermann bekennen muss, das Geheimnis des Glaubens: Er[2] ist offenbart im Fleisch, gerechtfertigt im Geist, erschienen den Engeln, gepredigt den Heiden, geglaubt in der Welt, aufgenommen in die Herrlichkeit. (Mk 16,19; Joh 1,14; Apg 28,28; Röm 1,4; Eph 1,20)
1Here is a trustworthy saying: whoever aspires to be an overseer desires a noble task.2Now the overseer is to be above reproach, faithful to his wife, temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach,3not given to drunkenness, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money.4He must manage his own family well and see that his children obey him, and he must do so in a manner worthy of full[1] respect.5(If anyone does not know how to manage his own family, how can he take care of God’s church?)6He must not be a recent convert, or he may become conceited and fall under the same judgment as the devil.7He must also have a good reputation with outsiders, so that he will not fall into disgrace and into the devil’s trap.8In the same way, deacons[2] are to be worthy of respect, sincere, not indulging in much wine, and not pursuing dishonest gain. (Röm 16,1; Phil 1,1)9They must keep hold of the deep truths of the faith with a clear conscience.10They must first be tested; and then if there is nothing against them, let them serve as deacons.11In the same way, the women[3] are to be worthy of respect, not malicious talkers but temperate and trustworthy in everything.12A deacon must be faithful to his wife and must manage his children and his household well.13Those who have served well gain an excellent standing and great assurance in their faith in Christ Jesus.
Reasons for Paul’s instructions
14Although I hope to come to you soon, I am writing to you with these instructions so that,15if I am delayed, you will know how people ought to conduct themselves in God’s household, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of the truth.16Beyond all question, the mystery from which true godliness springs is great: He appeared in the flesh, was vindicated by the Spirit,[4] was seen by angels, was preached among the nations, was believed on in the world, was taken up in glory.
