English Standard Version

from Crossway

God Shall Scatter His Enemies

1 To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. A Song. God shall arise, his enemies shall be scattered; and those who hate him shall flee before him! (Nu 10:35; Ps 89:10; Ps 92:9; Isa 33:3) 2 As smoke is driven away, so you shall drive them away; as wax melts before fire, so the wicked shall perish before God! (Ps 22:14; Ps 37:20; Ps 97:5; Mic 1:4) 3 But the righteous shall be glad; they shall exult before God; they shall be jubilant with joy! (Ps 32:11) 4 Sing to God, sing praises to his name; lift up a song to him who rides through the deserts; his name is the Lord; exult before him! (Ps 18:10; Ps 66:4; Ps 68:33; Ps 89:8; Isa 40:3; Isa 62:10) 5 Father of the fatherless and protector of widows is God in his holy habitation. (De 10:18; Ps 10:14) 6 God settles the solitary in a home; he leads out the prisoners to prosperity, but the rebellious dwell in a parched land. (1Sa 2:5; Ps 68:18; Ps 69:33; Ps 107:10; Ps 107:14; Ps 107:33; Ps 107:40; Ps 113:9; Ps 146:7; Ac 12:7; Ac 16:26) 7 O God, when you went out before your people, when you marched through the wilderness, (Ex 13:21; Jud 4:14; Jud 5:4; Ps 78:40; Hab 3:13; Zec 14:3) 8 the earth quaked, the heavens poured down rain, before God, the One of Sinai, before God,[1] the God of Israel. (Ex 19:18; Jud 5:4) 9 Rain in abundance, O God, you shed abroad; you restored your inheritance as it languished; (Ps 65:9) 10 your flock[2] found a dwelling in it; in your goodness, O God, you provided for the needy. (Ps 65:9; Ps 78:20) 11 The Lord gives the word; the women who announce the news are a great host: (Ex 15:20; 1Sa 18:6; Ps 33:9) 12 “The kings of the armies—they flee, they flee!” The women at home divide the spoil— (Nu 31:8; Jos 10:16; Jos 12:7; Jud 5:19; Jud 5:30; Ps 110:5) 13 though you men lie among the sheepfolds— the wings of a dove covered with silver, its pinions with shimmering gold. (Ge 49:14; Jud 5:16) 14 When the Almighty scatters kings there, let snow fall on Zalmon. (Jud 9:48) 15 O mountain of God, mountain of Bashan; O many-peaked[3] mountain, mountain of Bashan! 16 Why do you look with hatred, O many-peaked mountain, at the mount that God desired for his abode, yes, where the Lord will dwell forever? (De 12:5; Ps 78:54; Ps 87:1; Ps 132:13) 17 The chariots of God are twice ten thousand, thousands upon thousands; the Lord is among them; Sinai is now in the sanctuary. (2Ki 6:17; Hab 3:8) 18 You ascended on high, leading a host of captives in your train and receiving gifts among men, even among the rebellious, that the Lord God may dwell there. (Ex 29:45; Jud 5:12; Ps 7:7; Ps 47:5; Ps 78:60; Joh 14:23; Ac 1:9; Ac 2:4; Ac 2:33; Ro 5:8; Eph 4:8; 1Ti 1:13; Re 21:3) 19 Blessed be the Lord, who daily bears us up; God is our salvation. (Isa 46:4) 20 Our God is a God of salvation, and to God, the Lord, belong deliverances from death. (De 32:39; Ec 7:18; Re 1:18) 21 But God will strike the heads of his enemies, the hairy crown of him who walks in his guilty ways. (Ps 110:6; Hab 3:13) 22 The Lord said, “I will bring them back from Bashan, I will bring them back from the depths of the sea, (Nu 21:33; Am 9:2) 23 that you may strike your feet in their blood, that the tongues of your dogs may have their portion from the foe.” (1Ki 21:19; 1Ki 22:38; Ps 58:10) 24 Your procession is[4] seen, O God, the procession of my God, my King, into the sanctuary— 25 the singers in front, the musicians last, between them virgins playing tambourines: (Ex 15:20; Jud 11:34; 1Ch 13:8; 1Ch 15:16; Ps 33:3; Ps 47:5) 26 “Bless God in the great congregation, the Lord, O you[5] who are of Israel’s fountain!” (De 33:28; Ps 22:25; Ps 26:12; Isa 48:1; Isa 51:1) 27 There is Benjamin, the least of them, in the lead, the princes of Judah in their throng, the princes of Zebulun, the princes of Naphtali. (Jud 5:18; 1Sa 9:21) 28 Summon your power, O God,[6] the power, O God, by which you have worked for us. (Ps 42:8) 29 Because of your temple at Jerusalem kings shall bear gifts to you. (1Ki 10:10; 1Ki 10:25; 2Ch 32:23; Ps 45:12; Ps 76:11; Isa 18:7) 30 Rebuke the beasts that dwell among the reeds, the herd of bulls with the calves of the peoples. Trample underfoot those who lust after tribute; scatter the peoples who delight in war.[7] (2Sa 8:2; 2Sa 8:6; Job 40:21; Ps 22:12; Isa 19:6; Eze 29:3; Eze 32:2) 31 Nobles shall come from Egypt; Cush shall hasten to stretch out her hands to God. (Ps 44:20; Ps 87:4; Isa 19:19; Isa 19:21; Isa 45:14; Zep 3:10) 32 O kingdoms of the earth, sing to God; sing praises to the Lord, (Ps 102:22) 33 to him who rides in the heavens, the ancient heavens; behold, he sends out his voice, his mighty voice. (De 10:14; De 33:26; 1Ki 8:27; Ps 18:10; Ps 29:4; Ps 46:6; Ps 104:3) 34 Ascribe power to God, whose majesty is over Israel, and whose power is in the skies. (Ps 29:1; Ps 36:5; Ps 57:10; Ps 108:4; Ps 150:1) 35 Awesome is God from his[8] sanctuary; the God of Israel—he is the one who gives power and strength to his people. Blessed be God!
