Psalm 76

English Standard Version

1 To the choirmaster: with stringed instruments. A Psalm of Asaph. A Song. In Judah God is known; his name is great in Israel. (Ps 4:1; Ps 48:3; Ps 50:1)2 His abode has been established in Salem, his dwelling place in Zion. (Ge 14:18; Ps 9:11; Ps 27:5; Ps 74:2; La 2:6)3 There he broke the flashing arrows, the shield, the sword, and the weapons of war. (Ps 46:9; Eze 39:9)4 Glorious are you, more majestic than the mountains full of prey. (Isa 14:25; Eze 39:4; Na 2:13)5 The stouthearted were stripped of their spoil; they sank into sleep; all the men of war were unable to use their hands. (2Ki 19:35; Ps 13:3; Isa 46:12; Jer 51:39; Na 3:18)6 At your rebuke, O God of Jacob, both rider and horse lay stunned. (Ex 15:1; Ex 15:21)7 But you, you are to be feared! Who can stand before you when once your anger is roused? (Ps 47:2; Ps 130:3)8 From the heavens you uttered judgment; the earth feared and was still, (2Ch 20:29; Hab 2:20)9 when God arose to establish judgment, to save all the humble of the earth. (Ps 9:7)10 Surely the wrath of man shall praise you; the remnant[1] of wrath you will put on like a belt. (Ex 9:16)11 Make your vows to the Lord your God and perform them; let all around him bring gifts to him who is to be feared, (Ge 31:42; Ge 31:53; Ps 50:14; Ps 68:29; Ps 89:7; Isa 8:13)12 who cuts off the spirit of princes, who is to be feared by the kings of the earth. (Ps 47:2; Isa 18:5)

Psalm 76

New International Version

1 God is renowned in Judah; in Israel his name is great.2 His tent is in Salem, his dwelling-place in Zion.3 There he broke the flashing arrows, the shields and the swords, the weapons of war.[1]4 You are radiant with light, more majestic than mountains rich with game.5 The valiant lie plundered, they sleep their last sleep; not one of the warriors can lift his hands.6 At your rebuke, God of Jacob, both horse and chariot lie still.7 It is you alone who are to be feared. Who can stand before you when you are angry?8 From heaven you pronounced judgment, and the land feared and was quiet –9 when you, God, rose up to judge, to save all the afflicted of the land.10 Surely your wrath against mankind brings you praise, and the survivors of your wrath are restrained.[2]11 Make vows to the Lord your God and fulfil them; let all the neighbouring lands bring gifts to the One to be feared.12 He breaks the spirit of rulers; he is feared by the kings of the earth.

Psalm 76

King James Version

1 To the chief Musician on Neginoth, A Psalm or Song of Asaph. In Judah is God known: his name is great in Israel.2 In Salem also is his tabernacle, and his dwelling place in Zion.3 There brake he the arrows of the bow, the shield, and the sword, and the battle. Selah.4 Thou art more glorious and excellent than the mountains of prey.5 The stouthearted are spoiled, they have slept their sleep: and none of the men of might have found their hands.6 At thy rebuke, O God of Jacob, both the chariot and horse are cast into a dead sleep.7 Thou, even thou, art to be feared: and who may stand in thy sight when once thou art angry?8 Thou didst cause judgment to be heard from heaven; the earth feared, and was still,9 When God arose to judgment, to save all the meek of the earth. Selah.10 Surely the wrath of man shall praise thee: the remainder of wrath shalt thou restrain.11 Vow, and pay unto the LORD your God: let all that be round about him bring presents unto him that ought to be feared.12 He shall cut off the spirit of princes: he is terrible to the kings of the earth.

Psalm 76

New International Reader’s Version

1 In the land of Judah, God is well known. In Israel, his name is great.2 His tent is in Jerusalem. The place where he lives is on Mount Zion.3 There he broke the deadly arrows of his enemies. He broke their shields and swords. He broke their weapons of war.4 God, you shine like a very bright light. You are more majestic than mountains full of wild animals.5 Brave soldiers have been robbed of everything they had. Now they lie there, sleeping in death. Not one of them can even lift his hands.6 God of Jacob, at your command both horse and chariot lie still.7 People should have respect for you alone. Who can stand in front of you when you are angry?8 From heaven you handed down your sentence. The land was afraid and became quiet.9 God, that happened when you rose up to judge. It happened when you came to save all your suffering people in the land.10 Your anger against sinners brings you praise. Those who live through your anger gather to worship you.11 Make promises to the LORD your God and keep them. Let all the neighbouring nations bring gifts to the God who should be respected.12 He breaks the proud spirit of rulers. The kings of the earth have respect for him.
