Joseph and Potiphar’s Wife

1 Now Joseph had been brought down to Egypt, and Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, the captain of the guard, an Egyptian, had bought him from the Ishmaelites who had brought him down there. (Ge 37:25; Ge 37:28; Ge 37:36) 2 The Lord was with Joseph, and he became a successful man, and he was in the house of his Egyptian master. 3 His master saw that the Lord was with him and that the Lord caused all that he did to succeed in his hands. (2Ch 26:5; Ps 1:3) 4 So Joseph found favor in his sight and attended him, and he made him overseer of his house and put him in charge of all that he had. (Ge 19:19; Ge 33:10; Ge 39:8; Ge 39:21)

5 From the time that he made him overseer in his house and over all that he had, the Lord blessed the Egyptian’s house for Joseph’s sake; the blessing of the Lord was on all that he had, in house and field. (Ge 30:27) 6 So he left all that he had in Joseph’s charge, and because of him he had no concern about anything but the food he ate. Now Joseph was handsome in form and appearance. (Ge 29:17; 1Sa 16:12) 7 And after a time his master’s wife cast her eyes on Joseph and said, “Lie with me.” 8 But he refused and said to his master’s wife, “Behold, because of me my master has no concern about anything in the house, and he has put everything that he has in my charge. (Ge 39:4) 9 He is not greater in this house than I am, nor has he kept back anything from me except you, because you are his wife. How then can I do this great wickedness and sin against God?” (2Sa 12:13; Ps 51:4) 10 And as she spoke to Joseph day after day, he would not listen to her, to lie beside her or to be with her. (Pr 1:10) 11 But one day, when he went into the house to do his work and none of the men of the house was there in the house, 12 she caught him by his garment, saying, “Lie with me.” But he left his garment in her hand and fled and got out of the house. (Pr 7:13; Pr 7:18) 13 And as soon as she saw that he had left his garment in her hand and had fled out of the house, 14 she called to the men of her household and said to them, “See, he has brought among us a Hebrew to laugh at us. He came in to me to lie with me, and I cried out with a loud voice. 15 And as soon as he heard that I lifted up my voice and cried out, he left his garment beside me and fled and got out of the house.” 16 Then she laid up his garment by her until his master came home, 17 and she told him the same story, saying, “The Hebrew servant, whom you have brought among us, came in to me to laugh at me. 18 But as soon as I lifted up my voice and cried, he left his garment beside me and fled out of the house.” 19 As soon as his master heard the words that his wife spoke to him, “This is the way your servant treated me,” his anger was kindled. 20 And Joseph’s master took him and put him into the prison, the place where the king’s prisoners were confined, and he was there in prison. 21 But the Lord was with Joseph and showed him steadfast love and gave him favor in the sight of the keeper of the prison. (Ge 39:2; Ex 3:21; Ex 11:3; Ex 12:36; Ac 7:9)

22 And the keeper of the prison put Joseph in charge of all the prisoners who were in the prison. Whatever was done there, he was the one who did it. (Ge 40:4) 23 The keeper of the prison paid no attention to anything that was in Joseph’s charge, because the Lord was with him. And whatever he did, the Lord made it succeed. (Ge 39:2)

Josefs Aufstieg bei Potifar

1 Josef war von den ismaelitischen Händlern nach Ägypten gebracht worden. Sie hatten ihn an den Ägypter Potifar verkauft, einen Hofbeamten des Pharaos. Potifar war Befehlshaber der königlichen Leibwache. 2 Der HERR stand Josef bei, sodass ihm alles glückte, was er tat, und deshalb durfte er bei seinem ägyptischen Herrn im Haus arbeiten. 3 Potifar merkte bald, dass der HERR auf Josefs Seite war und ihm alles gelingen ließ. 4 Darum schenkte er Josef seine Gunst und machte ihn zu seiner rechten Hand. Er setzte ihn als Verwalter ein und vertraute ihm seinen ganzen Besitz an. 5 Von da an segnete der HERR Potifar^[1] um Josefs willen. Auf dem ganzem Besitz des Ägypters lag der Segen des HERRN; das war überall im Haus und auf den Feldern sichtbar.

Potifars Frau will Josef verführen

6 Darum ließ Potifar Josef in allem freie Hand und kümmerte sich um nichts mehr, außer um seine eigenen Speisen. Josef war ein außergewöhnlich gut aussehender Mann. 7 So kam es, dass Potifars Frau ein Auge auf ihn warf. »Komm, schlaf mit mir!«, forderte sie ihn auf. 8 Doch er weigerte sich. »Du weißt doch«, sagte er, »mein Herr braucht sich um nichts mehr im Haus zu kümmern, seit ich hier bin. Seinen ganzen Besitz hat er mir anvertraut. 9 In diesem Haus habe ich inzwischen genauso viel zu sagen wie er. Er hat mir nichts vorenthalten – nur dich, weil du seine Frau bist. Wie könnte ich da ein solches Unrecht begehen? Es wäre eine große Sünde gegen Gott.« 10 Obwohl Potifars Frau Josef Tag für Tag bedrängte, gab er nicht nach. Er ließ sich nicht von ihr verführen und schlief nicht mit ihr. 11 Als er einmal wie gewöhnlich zur Arbeit ins Haus kam und niemand von der Dienerschaft anwesend war, 12 hielt sie ihn an seinem Gewand fest und drängte ihn: »Komm, schlaf mit mir!« Er aber riss sich los und rannte aus dem Haus; das Gewand blieb in ihrer Hand zurück. 13 Als Potifars Frau sah, dass Josef fort war und er sein Gewand bei ihr gelassen hatte, 14 rief sie alle Diener im Haus zusammen und sagte: »Seht euch das an! Mein Mann hat uns diesen Hebräer ins Haus geholt, der jetzt mit uns umspringt, wie er will! Er ist zu mir hereingekommen und wollte mit mir schlafen. Da habe ich laut geschrien. 15 Als er mich schreien hörte, ließ er sein Gewand bei mir zurück und rannte davon.« 16 Sie legte Josefs Gewand neben sich, bis ihr Mann nach Hause kam. 17 Ihm erzählte sie dieselbe Geschichte: »Der hebräische Sklave, den du uns ins Haus geholt hast, ist zu mir gekommen und wollte sich an mir vergehen. 18 Ich fing laut an zu schreien, da ließ er sein Gewand neben mir liegen und floh nach draußen.« 19 Als Potifar die Geschichte seiner Frau hörte und erfuhr, was sie seinem Diener vorwarf, packte ihn der Zorn. 20 Er ließ Josef festnehmen und in das Gefängnis werfen, in dem die Gefangenen des Königs ihre Strafe verbüßten.

21 Doch der HERR stand Josef bei und ließ ihn seine Güte erfahren. Er sorgte dafür, dass der Gefängnisverwalter Josef wohlgesinnt war. 22 Der Verwalter übertrug Josef die Verantwortung für die Gefangenen und für alles, was im Gefängnis zu tun war. 23 Er selbst brauchte sich um nichts mehr zu kümmern. Denn der HERR stand Josef bei und ließ ihm alles gelingen, was er unternahm.
