Aber Mordechai beugte die Knie nicht und fiel nicht nieder.3Da sprachen die Knechte des Königs, die im Tor des Königs waren, zu Mordechai: Warum übertrittst du das Gebot des Königs?4Und es geschah, als sie dies täglich zu ihm sagten und er ihnen nicht gehorchte, sagten sie es Haman, um zu sehen, ob man Mordechais Begründung gelten lassen würde; denn er hatte ihnen gesagt, dass er ein Jude sei.5Als nun Haman sah, dass Mordechai die Knie nicht vor ihm beugte und nicht vor ihm niederfiel, da wurde er mit Wut erfüllt.6Doch es war ihm zu wenig, an Mordechai allein Hand zu legen; sondern weil man ihm das Volk Mordechais genannt hatte, trachtete Haman danach, alle Juden im ganzen Königreich des Ahasveros, das Volk Mordechais, zu vertilgen.7Im ersten Monat, das ist der Monat Nisan, im zwölften Jahr [der Regierung] des Königs Ahasveros, wurde das Pur,* das ist das Los, vor Haman geworfen über die Tage und Monate, und es fiel auf den zwölften Monat, das ist der Monat Adar.8Und Haman sprach zum König Ahasveros: Es gibt ein Volk, das lebt zerstreut und abgesondert unter allen Völkern in allen Provinzen deines Königreichs, und ihre Gesetze sind anders als die aller Völker, und sie befolgen die Gesetze des Königs nicht, sodass es dem König nicht geziemt, sie gewähren zu lassen!9Wenn es dem König gefällt, so werde ein Schreiben erlassen, dass man sie umbringen soll; dann will ich 10 000 Talente Silber abwiegen in die Hände der Schatzmeister, damit man es in die Schatzkammern des Königs bringe!10Da zog der König seinen Siegelring von der Hand und gab ihn Haman, dem Sohn Hamedatas, dem Agagiter, dem Feind der Juden.11Und der König sprach zu Haman: Das Silber sei dir geschenkt, und das Volk dazu, dass du mit ihm tust, was dir gefällt!12Da berief man die Schreiber des Königs am dreizehnten Tag des ersten Monats, und es wurde ein Schreiben erlassen, ganz wie Haman es befahl, an die Satrapen des Königs und an die Statthalter in allen Provinzen und an die Fürsten jedes Volkes, in der Schrift jeder Provinz und in der Sprache jedes Volkes; im Namen des Königs Ahasveros wurde es geschrieben und mit dem Siegelring des Königs versiegelt.13Und die Briefe wurden durch die Eilboten in alle Provinzen des Königs gesandt, dass man alle Juden vertilgen, erschlagen und umbringen solle, Junge und Alte, Kinder und Frauen, an einem Tag, nämlich am dreizehnten des zwölften Monats, das ist der Monat Adar, und dass man zugleich ihren Besitz rauben dürfe.14Die Abschrift des Schreibens wurde in jeder Provinz als Gesetz erlassen, indem man es allen Völkern bekannt machte, damit sie sich auf diesen Tag vorbereiten sollten.15Und die Eilboten zogen auf den Befehl des Königs hin schnell aus, sobald das Gesetz in der Burg Susan erlassen war. Haman Plots Against the Jews
1After these things King Ahasuerus promoted Haman the Agagite, the son of Hammedatha, and advanced him and set his throne above all the officials who were with him.2And all the king’s servants who were at the king’s gate bowed down and paid homage to Haman, for the king had so commanded concerning him. But Mordecai did not bow down or pay homage.3Then the king’s servants who were at the king’s gate said to Mordecai, “Why do you transgress the king’s command?”4And when they spoke to him day after day and he would not listen to them, they told Haman, in order to see whether Mordecai’s words would stand, for he had told them that he was a Jew.5And when Haman saw that Mordecai did not bow down or pay homage to him, Haman was filled with fury.6But he disdained* to lay hands on Mordecai alone. So, as they had made known to him the people of Mordecai, Haman sought to destroy* all the Jews, the people of Mordecai, throughout the whole kingdom of Ahasuerus.7In the first month, which is the month of Nisan, in the twelfth year of King Ahasuerus, they cast Pur (that is, they cast lots) before Haman day after day; and they cast it month after month till the twelfth month, which is the month of Adar.8Then Haman said to King Ahasuerus, “There is a certain people scattered abroad and dispersed among the peoples in all the provinces of your kingdom. Their laws are different from those of every other people, and they do not keep the king’s laws, so that it is not to the king’s profit to tolerate them.9If it please the king, let it be decreed that they be destroyed, and I will pay 10,000 talents* of silver into the hands of those who have charge of the king’s business, that they may put it into the king’s treasuries.”10So the king took his signet ring from his hand and gave it to Haman the Agagite, the son of Hammedatha, the enemy of the Jews.11And the king said to Haman, “The money is given to you, the people also, to do with them as it seems good to you.”12Then the king’s scribes were summoned on the thirteenth day of the first month, and an edict, according to all that Haman commanded, was written to the king’s satraps and to the governors over all the provinces and to the officials of all the peoples, to every province in its own script and every people in its own language. It was written in the name of King Ahasuerus and sealed with the king’s signet ring.13Letters were sent by couriers to all the king’s provinces with instruction to destroy, to kill, and to annihilate all Jews, young and old, women and children, in one day, the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, which is the month of Adar, and to plunder their goods.14A copy of the document was to be issued as a decree in every province by proclamation to all the peoples to be ready for that day.15The couriers went out hurriedly by order of the king, and the decree was issued in Susa the citadel. And the king and Haman sat down to drink, but the city of Susa was thrown into confusion.
