Guérison d'un lépreux

1 Lorsque Jésus fut descendu de la montagne, une grande foule le suivit. 2 Alors un lépreux s'approcha, se prosterna devant lui et dit: «Seigneur, si tu le veux, tu peux me rendre pur.» 3 Jésus tendit la main, le toucha et dit: «Je le veux, sois pur.» Aussitôt il fut purifié de sa lèpre. 4 Puis Jésus lui dit: «Fais bien attention de n'en parler à personne, mais va te montrer au prêtre et présente l'offrande que Moïse a prescrite, afin que cela leur serve de témoignage.»

Guérisons à Capernaüm

5 Alors que Jésus entrait dans Capernaüm, un officier romain l'aborda et le supplia 6 en disant: «Seigneur, mon serviteur est couché à la maison, atteint de paralysie, et il souffre beaucoup.» 7 Jésus lui dit: «J'irai et je le guérirai.» 8 L'officier répondit: «Seigneur, je ne suis pas digne que tu entres sous mon toit, mais dis seulement un mot et mon serviteur sera guéri. 9 En effet, moi aussi je suis un homme soumis à des supérieurs, j'ai des soldats sous mes ordres, et je dis à l'un: ‘Pars!’ et il part, à un autre: ‘Viens!’ et il vient, et à mon esclave: ‘Fais ceci!’ et il le fait.» 10 Après l'avoir entendu, Jésus fut dans l'admiration, et il dit à ceux qui le suivaient: «Je vous le dis en vérité, même en Israël je n'ai pas trouvé une aussi grande foi. 11 Or, je vous le déclare, beaucoup viendront de l'est et de l'ouest et seront à table avec Abraham, Isaac et Jacob dans le royaume des cieux. 12 Mais ceux à qui le royaume était destiné seront jetés dans les ténèbres extérieures, où il y aura des pleurs et des grincements de dents.» 13 Puis Jésus dit à l'officier: «Vas-y [et] sois traité conformément à ta foi.» Et au moment même le serviteur fut guéri. 14 Jésus se rendit ensuite à la maison de Pierre. Il vit la belle-mère de celui-ci couchée, avec de la fièvre. 15 Il lui toucha la main et la fièvre la quitta; puis elle se leva et le servit. 16 Le soir venu, on amena vers Jésus de nombreux démoniaques. Il chassa les esprits par sa parole et guérit tous les malades. 17 Ainsi s'accomplit ce que le prophète Esaïe avait annoncé: Il a pris nos faiblesses et il s'est chargé de nos maladies.*

Jésus, plus fort que la nature et les démons

18 Voyant une grande foule autour de lui, Jésus donna l'ordre de passer de l'autre côté du lac. 19 Un spécialiste de la loi s'approcha et lui dit: «Maître, je te suivrai partout où tu iras.» 20 Jésus lui répondit: «Les renards ont des tanières et les oiseaux du ciel ont des nids, mais le Fils de l'homme* n'a pas un endroit où il puisse reposer sa tête.» 21 Un autre, parmi les disciples, lui dit: «Seigneur, permets-moi d'aller d'abord enterrer mon père.» 22 Mais Jésus lui répondit: «Suis-moi et laisse les morts enterrer leurs morts.» 23 Il monta dans la barque et ses disciples le suivirent. 24 Soudain, il s'éleva sur le lac une si grande tempête que la barque était recouverte par les vagues. Et lui, il dormait. 25 Les disciples s'approchèrent et le réveillèrent en disant: «Seigneur, sauve-nous, nous allons mourir!» 26 Il leur dit: «Pourquoi êtes-vous si craintifs, hommes de peu de foi?» Alors il se leva, menaça les vents du lac et il y eut un grand calme. 27 Ces hommes furent très étonnés et dirent: «Quel genre d'homme est-ce? Même les vents et la mer lui obéissent!» 28 Lorsqu'il fut arrivé sur l'autre rive, dans le pays des Gadaréniens, deux démoniaques qui sortaient des tombeaux vinrent à sa rencontre. Ils étaient si dangereux que personne n'osait passer par là. 29 Et voilà qu'ils se mirent à crier: «Que nous veux-tu, [Jésus,] Fils de Dieu? Es-tu venu ici pour nous tourmenter avant le moment fixé?» 30 Il y avait loin d'eux un grand troupeau de porcs en train de chercher à manger. 31 Les démons suppliaient Jésus: «Si tu nous chasses, permets-nous d'aller dans ce troupeau de porcs.» 32 «Allez-y!» leur dit-il. Ils sortirent des deux hommes et entrèrent dans les porcs. Alors tout le troupeau se précipita du haut de la falaise dans le lac, et ils moururent dans l'eau. 33 Les gardiens du troupeau s'enfuirent et allèrent dans la ville rapporter tout ce qui s'était passé et ce qui était arrivé aux démoniaques. 34 Alors tous les habitants de la ville sortirent à la rencontre de Jésus et, dès qu'ils le virent, ils le supplièrent de quitter leur territoire.

Jesus heals a man with leprosy

1 When Jesus came down from the mountainside, large crowds followed him. 2 A man with leprosy* came and knelt before him and said, ‘Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.’ 3 Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. ‘I am willing,’ he said. ‘Be clean!’ Immediately he was cleansed of his leprosy. 4 Then Jesus said to him, ‘See that you don’t tell anyone. But go, show yourself to the priest and offer the gift Moses commanded, as a testimony to them.’

The faith of the centurion

5 When Jesus had entered Capernaum, a centurion came to him, asking for help. 6 ‘Lord,’ he said, ‘my servant lies at home paralysed, suffering terribly.’ 7 Jesus said to him, ‘Shall I come and heal him?’ 8 The centurion replied, ‘Lord, I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed. 9 For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, “Go,” and he goes; and that one, “Come,” and he comes. I say to my servant, “Do this,” and he does it.’ 10 When Jesus heard this, he was amazed and said to those following him, ‘Truly I tell you, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith. 11 I say to you that many will come from the east and the west, and will take their places at the feast with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven. 12 But the subjects of the kingdom will be thrown outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’ 13 Then Jesus said to the centurion, ‘Go! Let it be done just as you believed it would.’ And his servant was healed at that moment.

Jesus heals many

14 When Jesus came into Peter’s house, he saw Peter’s mother-in-law lying in bed with a fever. 15 He touched her hand and the fever left her, and she got up and began to wait on him. 16 When evening came, many who were demon-possessed were brought to him, and he drove out the spirits with a word and healed all who were ill. 17 This was to fulfil what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah: ‘He took up our infirmities and bore our diseases.’*

The cost of following Jesus

18 When Jesus saw the crowd around him, he gave orders to cross to the other side of the lake. 19 Then a teacher of the law came to him and said, ‘Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.’ 20 Jesus replied, ‘Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.’ 21 Another disciple said to him, ‘Lord, first let me go and bury my father.’ 22 But Jesus told him, ‘Follow me, and let the dead bury their own dead.’

Jesus calms the storm

23 Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him. 24 Suddenly a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. 25 The disciples went and woke him, saying, ‘Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!’ 26 He replied, ‘You of little faith, why are you so afraid?’ Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm. 27 The men were amazed and asked, ‘What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!’

Jesus restores two demon-possessed men

28 When he arrived at the other side in the region of the Gadarenes,* two demon-possessed men coming from the tombs met him. They were so violent that no-one could pass that way. 29 ‘What do you want with us, Son of God?’ they shouted. ‘Have you come here to torture us before the appointed time?’ 30 Some distance from them a large herd of pigs was feeding. 31 The demons begged Jesus, ‘If you drive us out, send us into the herd of pigs.’ 32 He said to them, ‘Go!’ So they came out and went into the pigs, and the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and died in the water. 33 Those tending the pigs ran off, went into the town and reported all this, including what had happened to the demon-possessed men. 34 Then the whole town went out to meet Jesus. And when they saw him, they pleaded with him to leave their region.
