Exploration à Jéricho

1 Josué, fils de Nun, fit partir secrètement de Sittim deux espions en leur disant: «Allez explorer le pays, en particulier Jéricho.» Ils partirent et arrivèrent dans la maison d'une prostituée du nom de Rahab, et ils y couchèrent. 2 On dit au roi de Jéricho: «Des Israélites sont arrivés ici, cette nuit, pour explorer le pays.» 3 Le roi de Jéricho envoya dire à Rahab: «Fais sortir les hommes qui sont venus chez toi, qui sont entrés dans ta maison. En effet, c'est pour explorer tout le pays qu'ils sont venus.» 4 La femme prit les deux hommes et les cacha. Puis elle dit: «Il est vrai que ces hommes sont arrivés chez moi, mais je ne savais pas d'où ils étaient 5 et, au moment où l'on allait fermer la porte, à la tombée de la nuit, ils sont sortis. J'ignore où ils sont allés. Dépêchez-vous de les poursuivre et vous les rattraperez.» 6 Elle avait fait monter les espions sur le toit et les avait cachés sous des tiges de lin qu'elle y avait arrangées. 7 Ces hommes les poursuivirent par le chemin qui mène au gué du Jourdain et l'on ferma la porte après leur départ. 8 Avant que les espions se couchent, Rahab monta vers eux sur le toit 9 et leur dit: «Je le sais, l'Eternel vous a donné ce pays. La terreur que vous inspirez s'est emparée de nous et tous les habitants du pays tremblent devant vous. 10 En effet, nous avons appris comment, à votre sortie d'Egypte, l'Eternel a asséché devant vous l'eau de la mer des Roseaux et comment vous avez traité les deux rois des Amoréens de l'autre côté du Jourdain, Sihon et Og, que vous avez exterminés. 11 En l'apprenant, nous avons perdu courage et notre esprit est abattu devant vous, car c'est l'Eternel, votre Dieu, qui est Dieu en haut dans le ciel et en bas sur la terre. 12 Et maintenant, je vous en prie, jurez-moi par l'Eternel que vous aurez pour ma famille la même bonté que moi pour vous. Donnez-moi l'assurance que 13 vous laisserez vivre mon père, ma mère, mes frères, mes sœurs et tous les leurs et que vous nous sauverez de la mort.» 14 Ces hommes lui répondirent: «Nous le jurons sur notre propre vie si vous ne divulguez pas ce qui nous concerne. Et quand l'Eternel nous donnera le pays, nous agirons envers toi avec bonté et fidélité.» 15 Elle les fit descendre avec une corde par la fenêtre, car la maison qu'elle habitait était sur la muraille de la ville. 16 Elle leur dit: «Allez du côté de la montagne, sinon vos poursuivants risqueraient de vous rencontrer. Cachez-vous là pendant trois jours, jusqu'à ce qu'ils soient rentrés. Après cela, vous poursuivrez votre chemin.» 17 Ces hommes lui dirent: «Voici de quelle manière nous nous acquitterons du serment que tu nous as fait faire. 18 A notre entrée dans le pays, attache ce cordon de fil rouge à la fenêtre par laquelle tu nous fais descendre et rassemble avec toi dans la maison ton père, ta mère, tes frères et toute ta famille. 19 Si l'un d'eux passe la porte de ta maison pour aller dehors, son sang retombera sur sa tête et nous en serons innocents. En revanche, si l'on porte la main contre l'un de ceux qui seront avec toi dans la maison, quel qu'il soit, son sang retombera sur notre tête. 20 Si par ailleurs tu divulgues ce qui nous concerne, nous serons quittes du serment que tu nous as fait faire.» 21 Elle répondit: «Qu'il en soit comme vous l'avez dit.» Elle prit ainsi congé d'eux et ils s'en allèrent. Puis elle attacha le cordon rouge à la fenêtre. 22 Ils partirent et arrivèrent à la montagne, où ils restèrent trois jours, jusqu'à ce que ceux qui les poursuivaient soient rentrés. Ceux qui les poursuivaient les cherchèrent dans toute la région, mais sans les trouver. 23 Les deux hommes redescendirent de la montagne et passèrent le Jourdain. Ils vinrent vers Josué, fils de Nun, et lui racontèrent tout ce qui leur était arrivé. 24 Ils lui dirent: «C'est certain, l'Eternel a livré tout le pays entre nos mains, et même tous les habitants du pays tremblent devant nous.»

Rahab and the spies

1 Then Joshua son of Nun secretly sent two spies from Shittim. ‘Go, look over the land,’ he said, ‘especially Jericho.’ So they went and entered the house of a prostitute named Rahab and stayed there. 2 The king of Jericho was told, ‘Look, some of the Israelites have come here tonight to spy out the land.’ 3 So the king of Jericho sent this message to Rahab: ‘Bring out the men who came to you and entered your house, because they have come to spy out the whole land.’ 4 But the woman had taken the two men and hidden them. She said, ‘Yes, the men came to me, but I did not know where they had come from. 5 At dusk, when it was time to close the city gate, they left. I don’t know which way they went. Go after them quickly. You may catch up with them.’ 6 (But she had taken them up to the roof and hidden them under the stalks of flax she had laid out on the roof.) 7 So the men set out in pursuit of the spies on the road that leads to the fords of the Jordan, and as soon as the pursuers had gone out, the gate was shut. 8 Before the spies lay down for the night, she went up on the roof 9 and said to them, ‘I know that the Lord has given this land to you and that a great fear of you has fallen on us, so that all who live in this country are melting in fear because of you. 10 We have heard how the Lord dried up the water of the Red Sea* for you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to Sihon and Og, the two kings of the Amorites east of the Jordan, whom you completely destroyed.* 11 When we heard of it, our hearts sank and everyone’s courage failed because of you, for the Lord your God is God in heaven above and on the earth below. 12 ‘Now then, please swear to me by the Lord that you will show kindness to my family, because I have shown kindness to you. Give me a sure sign 13 that you will spare the lives of my father and mother, my brothers and sisters, and all who belong to them – and that you will save us from death.’ 14 ‘Our lives for your lives!’ the men assured her. ‘If you don’t tell what we are doing, we will treat you kindly and faithfully when the Lord gives us the land.’ 15 So she let them down by a rope through the window, for the house she lived in was part of the city wall. 16 She said to them, ‘Go to the hills so that the pursuers will not find you. Hide yourselves there for three days until they return, and then go on your way.’ 17 Now the men had said to her, ‘This oath you made us swear will not be binding on us 18 unless, when we enter the land, you have tied this scarlet cord in the window through which you let us down, and unless you have brought your father and mother, your brothers and all your family into your house. 19 If any of them go outside your house into the street, their blood will be on their own heads; we will not be responsible. As for those who are in the house with you, their blood will be on our head if a hand is laid on them. 20 But if you tell what we are doing, we will be released from the oath you made us swear.’ 21 ‘Agreed,’ she replied. ‘Let it be as you say.’ So she sent them away, and they departed. And she tied the scarlet cord in the window. 22 When they left, they went into the hills and stayed there three days, until the pursuers had searched all along the road and returned without finding them. 23 Then the two men started back. They went down out of the hills, forded the river and came to Joshua son of Nun and told him everything that had happened to them. 24 They said to Joshua, ‘The Lord has surely given the whole land into our hands; all the people are melting in fear because of us.’
