1Après cela, il y eut une fête juive et Jésus monta à Jérusalem.2Or à Jérusalem, près de la porte des brebis, il y a une piscine qui s'appelle en hébreu Béthesda et qui a cinq portiques.3Sous ces portiques un grand nombre de malades étaient couchés: des aveugles, des boiteux, des paralysés; [ils attendaient le mouvement de l'eau,]4[car un ange descendait de temps en temps dans la piscine et agitait l'eau; et le premier qui descendait dans l'eau après qu'elle avait été agitée était guéri, quelle que soit sa maladie.]5Là se trouvait un homme infirme depuis 38 ans.6Jésus le vit couché et, sachant qu'il était malade depuis longtemps, il lui dit: «Veux-tu être guéri?»7L'infirme lui répondit: «Seigneur, je n'ai personne pour me plonger dans la piscine quand l'eau est agitée, et pendant que j'y vais, un autre descend avant moi.»8«Lève-toi, lui dit Jésus, prends ton brancard et marche.»9Aussitôt cet homme fut guéri; il prit son brancard et se mit à marcher.10C'était un jour de sabbat. Les Juifs dirent donc à celui qui avait été guéri: «C'est le sabbat; il ne t'est pas permis de porter ton brancard.»11Il leur répondit: «Celui qui m'a guéri m'a dit: ‘Prends ton brancard et marche.’»12Ils lui demandèrent: «Qui est l'homme qui t'a dit: ‘Prends [ton brancard] et marche’?»13Mais celui qui avait été guéri ne savait pas qui c'était, car Jésus avait disparu dans la foule qui était à cet endroit.14Quelque temps plus tard, Jésus le retrouva dans le temple et lui dit: «Te voilà guéri. Ne pèche plus, de peur qu'il ne t'arrive quelque chose de pire.»15Cet homme s'en alla annoncer aux Juifs que c'était Jésus qui l'avait guéri.16C'est pourquoi les Juifs poursuivaient Jésus [et cherchaient à le faire mourir], parce qu'il avait fait cela le jour du sabbat.17Cependant, Jésus leur répondit: «Mon Père est à l'œuvre jusqu'à présent; moi aussi, je suis à l'œuvre.»18Voilà pourquoi les Juifs cherchaient encore plus à le faire mourir: parce que non seulement il violait le sabbat, mais il appelait aussi Dieu son propre Père, se faisant lui-même égal à Dieu.19Jésus reprit donc la parole et leur dit: «En vérité, en vérité, je vous le dis, le Fils ne peut rien faire de lui-même, sinon ce qu'il voit le Père accomplir. Tout ce que le Père fait, le Fils aussi le fait pareillement.20En effet, le Père aime le Fils et lui montre tout ce que lui-même fait, et il lui montrera des œuvres plus grandes que celles-ci, afin que vous soyez dans l'étonnement.21En effet, tout comme le Père ressuscite les morts et donne la vie, le Fils aussi donne la vie à qui il veut.22Le Père ne juge personne, mais il a remis tout jugement au Fils23afin que tous honorent le Fils comme ils honorent le Père. Celui qui n'honore pas le Fils n'honore pas le Père qui l'a envoyé.24En vérité, en vérité, je vous le dis, celui qui écoute ma parole et qui croit à celui qui m'a envoyé a la vie éternelle; il ne vient pas en jugement, mais il est passé de la mort à la vie.25En vérité, en vérité, je vous le dis, l'heure vient, et elle est déjà là, où les morts entendront la voix du Fils de Dieu, et ceux qui l'auront entendue vivront.26En effet, tout comme le Père a la vie en lui-même, ainsi il a donné au Fils d'avoir la vie en lui-même.27Et il lui a donné [aussi] le pouvoir de juger, parce qu'il est le Fils de l'homme.28Ne vous en étonnez pas, car l'heure vient où tous ceux qui sont dans les tombeaux entendront sa voix et29en sortiront: ceux qui auront fait le bien ressusciteront pour la vie, mais ceux qui auront fait le mal ressusciteront pour le jugement.30Je ne peux rien faire de moi-même: je juge d'après ce que j'entends, et mon jugement est juste parce que je ne cherche pas à faire ma volonté, mais celle du Père qui m'a envoyé.31»Si je me rends témoignage à moi-même, mon témoignage n'est pas valable.32C'est un autre qui témoigne en ma faveur, et je sais que le témoignage qu'il me rend est vrai.33Vous avez envoyé une délégation vers Jean, et il a rendu témoignage à la vérité.34Pour ma part, ce n'est pas d'un homme que je reçois le témoignage, mais je dis cela afin que vous soyez sauvés.35Jean était la lampe qui brûle et qui brille, et vous avez voulu vous réjouir une heure à sa lumière.36Pour ma part, j'ai un témoignage plus grand que celui de Jean: ce sont les œuvres que le Père m'a donné d'accomplir. Ces œuvres mêmes que je fais témoignent à mon sujet que c'est le Père qui m'a envoyé,37et le Père qui m'a envoyé a rendu lui-même témoignage à mon sujet. Vous n'avez jamais entendu sa voix, vous n'avez pas vu son visage38et sa parole n'habite pas en vous, puisque vous ne croyez pas en celui qu'il a envoyé.39Vous étudiez les Ecritures parce que vous pensez avoir par elles la vie éternelle. Ce sont elles qui rendent témoignage à mon sujet,40et vous ne voulez pas venir à moi pour avoir la vie!41»Je ne reçois pas ma gloire des hommes.42Mais je vous connais: vous n'avez pas l'amour de Dieu en vous.43Je suis venu au nom de mon Père et vous ne me recevez pas; si un autre vient en son propre nom, vous le recevrez.44Comment pouvez-vous croire, vous qui recevez votre gloire les uns des autres et qui ne recherchez pas la gloire qui vient de Dieu seul?45Ne pensez pas que c'est moi qui vous accuserai devant le Père; celui qui vous accuse, c'est Moïse, celui en qui vous avez mis votre espérance.46En effet, si vous croyiez Moïse, vous me croiriez aussi, puisqu'il a écrit à mon sujet.47Mais si vous ne croyez pas à ses écrits, comment croirez-vous à mes paroles?»

The healing at the pool
1Some time later, Jesus went up to Jerusalem for one of the Jewish festivals.2Now there is in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate a pool, which in Aramaic is called Bethesda* and which is surrounded by five covered colonnades.3Here a great number of disabled people used to lie – the blind, the lame, the paralysed.*5One who was there had been an invalid for thirty-eight years.6When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, ‘Do you want to get well?’7‘Sir,’ the invalid replied, ‘I have no-one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me.’8Then Jesus said to him, ‘Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.’9At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked. The day on which this took place was a Sabbath,10and so the Jewish leaders said to the man who had been healed, ‘It is the Sabbath; the law forbids you to carry your mat.’11But he replied, ‘The man who made me well said to me, “Pick up your mat and walk.” ’12So they asked him, ‘Who is this fellow who told you to pick it up and walk?’13The man who was healed had no idea who it was, for Jesus had slipped away into the crowd that was there.14Later Jesus found him at the temple and said to him, ‘See, you are well again. Stop sinning or something worse may happen to you.’15The man went away and told the Jewish leaders that it was Jesus who had made him well.
The authority of the Son
16So, because Jesus was doing these things on the Sabbath, the Jewish leaders began to persecute him.17In his defence Jesus said to them, ‘My Father is always at his work to this very day, and I too am working.’18For this reason they tried all the more to kill him; not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.19Jesus gave them this answer: ‘Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does.20For the Father loves the Son and shows him all he does. Yes, and he will show him even greater works than these, so that you will be amazed.21For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son gives life to whom he is pleased to give it.22Moreover, the Father judges no-one, but has entrusted all judgment to the Son,23that all may honour the Son just as they honour the Father. Whoever does not honour the Son does not honour the Father, who sent him.24‘Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life.25Very truly I tell you, a time is coming and has now come when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God and those who hear will live.26For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself.27And he has given him authority to judge because he is the Son of Man.28‘Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice29and come out – those who have done what is good will rise to live, and those who have done what is evil will rise to be condemned.30By myself I can do nothing; I judge only as I hear, and my judgment is just, for I seek not to please myself but him who sent me.
Testimonies about Jesus
31‘If I testify about myself, my testimony is not true.32There is another who testifies in my favour, and I know that his testimony about me is true.33‘You have sent to John and he has testified to the truth.34Not that I accept human testimony; but I mention it that you may be saved.35John was a lamp that burned and gave light, and you chose for a time to enjoy his light.36‘I have testimony weightier than that of John. For the works that the Father has given me to finish – the very works that I am doing – testify that the Father has sent me.37And the Father who sent me has himself testified concerning me. You have never heard his voice nor seen his form,38nor does his word dwell in you, for you do not believe the one he sent.39You study* the Scriptures diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life. These are the very Scriptures that testify about me,40yet you refuse to come to me to have life.41‘I do not accept glory from human beings,42but I know you. I know that you do not have the love of God in your hearts.43I have come in my Father’s name, and you do not accept me; but if someone else comes in his own name, you will accept him.44How can you believe since you accept glory from one another but do not seek the glory that comes from the only God*?45‘But do not think I will accuse you before the Father. Your accuser is Moses, on whom your hopes are set.46If you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote about me.47But since you do not believe what he wrote, how are you going to believe what I say?’
