Jeremia 40 | Segond 21

1 La parole fut adressée à Jérémie de la part de l'Eternel après que Nebuzaradan, chef des gardes, l'eut laissé partir de Rama. Quand il le prit en charge, Jérémie était enchaîné au milieu de tous les prisonniers de Jérusalem et de Juda qu'on emmenait en exil à Babylone.

2 Le chef des gardes prit Jérémie à part et lui dit: «L'Eternel, ton Dieu, avait annoncé que ce malheur frapperait cet endroit.

3 Il a fait venir et mis à exécution ce qu'il avait annoncé. Tout cela vous est arrivé parce que vous avez péché contre l'Eternel et ne l'avez pas écouté.

4 Regarde, je te libère aujourd'hui des chaînes que tu as aux mains. Si tu juges bon de venir avec moi à Babylone, viens! Je veillerai sur toi. Mais si cela ne te convient pas, ne t'en fais pas! Regarde: tout le pays est devant toi. Va là où il te semblera bon et approprié d'aller!»

5 Comme Jérémie tardait à répondre, il ajouta: «Retourne vers Guedalia, fils d'Achikam et petit-fils de Shaphan, que le roi de Babylone a désigné responsable des villes de Juda, et installe-toi avec lui au milieu de la population, ou alors va partout où il te semblera approprié d'aller!» Le chef des gardes lui donna ensuite des provisions et un cadeau, puis il le laissa partir.

6 Jérémie alla rejoindre Guedalia, fils d'Achikam, à Mitspa et s'installa avec lui au milieu de la population restée dans le pays.

Assassinat du gouverneur Guedalia

7 Tous les chefs de troupes dispersés dans la campagne et leurs hommes apprirent que le roi de Babylone avait désigné Guedalia, fils d'Achikam, comme gouverneur du pays et lui avait confié hommes, femmes et enfants, les pauvres du pays qu'on n'avait pas emmenés en exil à Babylone.

8 Ils allèrent alors, avec leurs hommes, trouver Guedalia à Mitspa. Il y avait Ismaël, fils de Nethania, Jochanan et Jonathan, fils de Karéach, Seraja, fils de Thanhumeth, les fils d'Ephaï de Nethopha et Jezania, fils du Maacatite.

9 Guedalia, fils d'Achikam et petit-fils de Shaphan, leur affirma avec serment, à eux et à leurs hommes: «N'ayez pas peur de devenir les serviteurs des Babyloniens! Installez-vous dans le pays, servez le roi de Babylone et tout se passera bien pour vous.

10 Pour ma part, je vais m'installer à Mitspa pour assurer le contact avec les Babyloniens qui viendront vers nous. Quant à vous, veillez à la production du vin, des fruits d'été et de l'huile, conservez-les dans vos récipients et installez-vous dans les villes que vous occupez.»

11 Tous les Juifs qui se trouvaient dans le pays de Moab, chez les Ammonites, dans le pays d'Edom et dans tous les autres pays apprirent aussi que le roi de Babylone avait laissé des habitants en Juda, sous la responsabilité de Guedalia, fils d'Achikam et petit-fils de Shaphan.

12 Ils revinrent alors de tous les endroits où ils avaient été chassés et allèrent rejoindre Guedalia à Mitspa, dans le pays de Juda. Leur production de vin et de fruits d'été fut très importante.

13 Jochanan, fils de Karéach, et tous les chefs de troupes présents dans la campagne vinrent trouver Guedalia à Mitspa

14 et lui dirent: «Ne sais-tu donc pas que Baalis, le roi des Ammonites, a chargé Ismaël, fils de Nethania, de t'enlever la vie?» Cependant, Guedalia, fils d'Achikam, ne les crut pas.

15 Alors Jochanan, fils de Karéach, dit secrètement à Guedalia à Mitspa: «Permets que j'aille tuer Ismaël, fils de Nethania! Personne ne le saura. Pourquoi t'enlèverait-il la vie? Pourquoi tous les Judéens rassemblés auprès de toi devraient-ils être dispersés et ce qui reste de Juda devrait-il disparaître?»

16 Guedalia, fils d'Achikam, répondit à Jochanan, fils de Karéach: «Ne fais pas cela, car ce que tu dis à propos d'Ismaël est faux.»

Jeremiah freed

1 The word came to Jeremiah from the Lord after Nebuzaradan commander of the imperial guard had released him at Ramah. He had found Jeremiah bound in chains among all the captives from Jerusalem and Judah who were being carried into exile to Babylon.

2 When the commander of the guard found Jeremiah, he said to him, ‘The Lord your God decreed this disaster for this place.

3 And now the Lord has brought it about; he has done just as he said he would. All this happened because you people sinned against the Lord and did not obey him.

4 But today I am freeing you from the chains on your wrists. Come with me to Babylon, if you like, and I will look after you; but if you do not want to, then don’t come. Look, the whole country lies before you; go wherever you please.’

5 However, before Jeremiah turned to go,* Nebuzaradan added, ‘Go back to Gedaliah son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, whom the king of Babylon has appointed over the towns of Judah, and live with him among the people, or go anywhere else you please.’ Then the commander gave him provisions and a present and let him go.

6 So Jeremiah went to Gedaliah son of Ahikam at Mizpah and stayed with him among the people who were left behind in the land.

Gedaliah assassinated

7 When all the army officers and their men who were still in the open country heard that the king of Babylon had appointed Gedaliah son of Ahikam as governor over the land and had put him in charge of the men, women and children who were the poorest in the land and who had not been carried into exile to Babylon,

8 they came to Gedaliah at Mizpah – Ishmael son of Nethaniah, Johanan and Jonathan the sons of Kareah, Seraiah son of Tanhumeth, the sons of Ephai the Netophathite, and Jaazaniah* the son of the Maakathite, and their men.

9 Gedaliah son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, took an oath to reassure them and their men. ‘Do not be afraid to serve the Babylonians,*’ he said. ‘Settle down in the land and serve the king of Babylon, and it will go well with you.

10 I myself will stay in Mizpah to represent you before the Babylonians who come to us, but you are to harvest the wine, summer fruit and olive oil, and put them in your storage jars, and live in the towns you have taken over.’

11 When all the Jews in Moab, Ammon, Edom and all the other countries heard that the king of Babylon had left a remnant in Judah and had appointed Gedaliah son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, as governor over them,

12 they all came back to the land of Judah, to Gedaliah at Mizpah, from all the countries where they had been scattered. And they harvested an abundance of wine and summer fruit.

13 Johanan son of Kareah and all the army officers still in the open country came to Gedaliah at Mizpah

14 and said to him, ‘Don’t you know that Baalis king of the Ammonites has sent Ishmael son of Nethaniah to take your life?’ But Gedaliah son of Ahikam did not believe them.

15 Then Johanan son of Kareah said privately to Gedaliah in Mizpah, ‘Let me go and kill Ishmael son of Nethaniah, and no-one will know it. Why should he take your life and cause all the Jews who are gathered around you to be scattered and the remnant of Judah to perish?’

16 But Gedaliah son of Ahikam said to Johanan son of Kareah, ‘Don’t do such a thing! What you are saying about Ishmael is not true.’
