1 [C'est pourquoi] je t'en supplie, devant Dieu et devant [le Seigneur] Jésus-Christ qui doit juger les vivants et les morts au moment de sa venue et de son règne:

2 prêche la parole, insiste en toute occasion, qu'elle soit favorable ou non, réfute, reprends et encourage. Fais tout cela avec une pleine patience et un entier souci d'instruire.

3 En effet, un temps viendra où les hommes ne supporteront pas la saine doctrine. Au contraire, ayant la démangeaison d'entendre des choses agréables, ils se donneront une foule d'enseignants conformes à leurs propres désirs.

4 Ils détourneront l'oreille de la vérité et se tourneront vers les fables.

5 Mais toi, sois sobre en tout, supporte les souffrances, accomplis la tâche d'un évangéliste, remplis bien ton ministère.

6 Pour ma part, en effet, je suis déjà comme sacrifié et le moment de mon départ approche.

7 J'ai combattu le bon combat, j'ai terminé la course, j'ai gardé la foi.

8 Désormais, la couronne de justice m'est réservée. Le Seigneur, le juste juge, me la remettra ce jour-là*, et non seulement à moi, mais aussi à tous ceux qui auront attendu avec amour sa venue.

9 Tâche de me rejoindre au plus vite,

10 car Démas m'a abandonné par amour pour le monde présent et il est parti pour Thessalonique, tandis que Crescens est allé en Galatie et Tite en Dalmatie.

11 Luc seul est avec moi. Prends Marc et amène-le avec toi, car il m'est utile pour le ministère.

12 Par ailleurs, j'ai envoyé Tychique à Ephèse.

13 Quand tu viendras, rapporte-moi le manteau que j'ai laissé à Troas chez Carpus et les livres, surtout les parchemins.

14 Alexandre, le forgeron, m'a fait beaucoup de mal. Le Seigneur le traitera conformément à ses actes.*

15 Méfie-toi aussi de lui, car il s'est fortement opposé à nos paroles.

16 La première fois que j'ai présenté ma défense, personne ne m'a soutenu, tous m'ont au contraire abandonné. Qu'il ne leur en soit pas tenu compte!

17 C'est le Seigneur qui m'a soutenu et fortifié afin que, par mon intermédiaire, le message soit pleinement proclamé et entendu de toutes les nations; c'est ainsi que j'ai été délivré de la gueule du lion.

18 Le Seigneur me délivrera de toute œuvre mauvaise et me sauvera pour me faire entrer dans son royaume céleste. A lui soit la gloire aux siècles des siècles! Amen!

19 Salue Prisca et Aquilas ainsi que la famille d'Onésiphore.

20 Eraste est resté à Corinthe et j'ai laissé Trophime malade à Milet.

21 Tâche de venir avant l'hiver. Eubulus, Pudens, Linus, Claudia et tous les frères et sœurs te saluent.

22 Que le Seigneur [Jésus-Christ] soit avec ton esprit! Que la grâce soit avec vous!

New International Version

1 In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I give you this charge:

2 preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage – with great patience and careful instruction.

3 For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather round them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear.

4 They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.

5 But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry.

6 For I am already being poured out like a drink offering, and the time for my departure is near.

7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.

8 Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day – and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.

9 Do your best to come to me quickly,

10 for Demas, because he loved this world, has deserted me and has gone to Thessalonica. Crescens has gone to Galatia, and Titus to Dalmatia.

11 Only Luke is with me. Get Mark and bring him with you, because he is helpful to me in my ministry.

12 I sent Tychicus to Ephesus.

13 When you come, bring the cloak that I left with Carpus at Troas, and my scrolls, especially the parchments.

14 Alexander the metalworker did me a great deal of harm. The Lord will repay him for what he has done.

15 You too should be on your guard against him, because he strongly opposed our message.

16 At my first defence, no-one came to my support, but everyone deserted me. May it not be held against them.

17 But the Lord stood at my side and gave me strength, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear it. And I was delivered from the lion’s mouth.

18 The Lord will rescue me from every evil attack and will bring me safely to his heavenly kingdom. To him be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

19 Greet Priscilla* and Aquila and the household of Onesiphorus.

20 Erastus stayed in Corinth, and I left Trophimus ill in Miletus.

21 Do your best to get here before winter. Eubulus greets you, and so do Pudens, Linus, Claudia and all the brothers and sisters.*
