1A cette époque-là, les Philistins rassemblèrent leurs troupes et formèrent une armée pour faire la guerre à Israël. Akish dit à David: «Tu dois savoir que vous ferez cette campagne avec moi, toi et tes hommes.»2David répondit à Akish: «Eh bien! Tu verras ce que ton serviteur fera.» Akish dit à David: «Eh bien! Je t'établirai pour toujours comme mon garde du corps.»3Samuel était mort. Tout Israël l'avait pleuré et on l'avait enterré à Rama, dans sa ville. Saül avait supprimé du pays ceux qui invoquaient les esprits et les spirites.4Les Philistins se rassemblèrent et vinrent installer leur camp à Sunem. Saül rassembla tout Israël et ils établirent leur camp à Guilboa.5A la vue du camp des Philistins, Saül fut rempli de peur et son cœur trembla violemment.6Il consulta l'Eternel, mais l'Eternel ne lui répondit pas, ni par des rêves, ni par l'urim ni par les prophètes.7Saül dit alors à ses serviteurs: «Cherchez-moi une femme capable d'invoquer les esprits et j'irai la consulter.» Ses serviteurs lui dirent: «A En-Dor il y a une femme capable d'invoquer les esprits.»8Alors Saül se déguisa en enfilant d'autres vêtements et partit avec deux hommes. Ils arrivèrent de nuit chez la femme. Saül lui dit: «Pratique donc la divination pour moi en invoquant un mort, en faisant monter pour moi celui que je t'indiquerai.»9La femme lui répondit: «Tu sais ce que Saül a fait, la manière dont il a fait disparaître du pays ceux qui sont capables d'invoquer les esprits et les spirites. Pourquoi donc tends-tu un piège à ma vie? Veux-tu me faire mourir?»10Saül lui jura par l'Eternel: «L'Eternel est vivant! Il ne t'arrivera aucun mal pour cela.»11La femme demanda: «Qui veux-tu que je fasse monter pour toi?» Il répondit: «Fais-moi monter Samuel.»12Lorsque la femme vit Samuel, elle poussa un grand cri et dit à Saül: «Pourquoi m'as-tu trompée? Tu es Saül!»13Le roi lui dit: «N'aie pas peur! Dis-moi plutôt ce que tu vois.» La femme dit à Saül: «Je vois un dieu monter de la terre.»14Il lui dit: «Quelle est son apparence?» Elle répondit: «C'est un vieillard qui monte et il est enveloppé d'un manteau.» Saül comprit alors que c'était Samuel et il s'inclina le visage contre terre et se prosterna.15Samuel dit à Saül: «Pourquoi as-tu troublé mon repos en me faisant monter?» Saül répondit: «Je suis dans une grande détresse: les Philistins me font la guerre et Dieu s'est détourné de moi. Il ne m'a répondu ni par les prophètes ni par des rêves. Je t'ai appelé pour que tu me fasses connaître ce que je dois faire.»16Samuel dit: «Pourquoi donc me consultes-tu, puisque l'Eternel s'est détourné de toi et qu'il est devenu ton ennemi?17L'Eternel te traite comme je te l'avais annoncé de sa part: il a arraché la royauté de tes mains et l'a donnée à un autre, à David.18Tu n'as pas obéi à l'Eternel, tu n'as pas fait sentir à Amalek l'ardeur de sa colère. Voilà pourquoi l'Eternel te traite aujourd'hui de cette manière.19L'Eternel livrera même Israël avec toi entre les mains des Philistins. Demain, tes fils et toi, vous serez avec moi et l'Eternel livrera le camp d'Israël entre les mains des Philistins.»20Aussitôt Saül tomba à terre de tout son long. Les paroles de Samuel le remplissaient d'épouvante. De plus, il manquait de force, car il n'avait pris aucune nourriture de toute la journée et de toute la nuit.21La femme s'approcha de Saül et, le voyant très effrayé, elle lui dit: «Ta servante t'a écouté. J'ai risqué ma vie en obéissant aux paroles que tu m'as dites.22Ecoute maintenant, toi aussi, ta servante: laisse-moi t'offrir un morceau de pain à manger. Ainsi, tu auras la force de te remettre en route.»23Mais Saül refusa et déclara: «Je ne mangerai pas.» Ses serviteurs, et même la femme, insistèrent et il les écouta. Il se leva de terre et s'assit sur le lit.24La femme avait chez elle un veau gras, qu'elle s'empressa de tuer. Elle prit de la farine, la pétrit et fit cuire des pains sans levain.25Elle déposa le tout devant Saül et ses serviteurs, et ils mangèrent. Puis ils se levèrent et partirent la nuit même.

1In those days the Philistines gathered their forces to fight against Israel. Achish said to David, ‘You must understand that you and your men will accompany me in the army.’2David said, ‘Then you will see for yourself what your servant can do.’ Achish replied, ‘Very well, I will make you my bodyguard for life.’
Saul and the medium at Endor
3Now Samuel was dead, and all Israel had mourned for him and buried him in his own town of Ramah. Saul had expelled the mediums and spiritists from the land.4The Philistines assembled and came and set up camp at Shunem, while Saul gathered all Israel and set up camp at Gilboa.5When Saul saw the Philistine army, he was afraid; terror filled his heart.6He enquired of the Lord, but the Lord did not answer him by dreams or Urim or prophets.7Saul then said to his attendants, ‘Find me a woman who is a medium, so that I may go and enquire of her.’ ‘There is one in Endor,’ they said.8So Saul disguised himself, putting on other clothes, and at night he and two men went to the woman. ‘Consult a spirit for me,’ he said, ‘and bring up for me the one I name.’9But the woman said to him, ‘Surely you know what Saul has done. He has cut off the mediums and spiritists from the land. Why have you set a trap for my life to bring about my death?’10Saul swore to her by the Lord, ‘As surely as the Lord lives, you will not be punished for this.’11Then the woman asked, ‘Whom shall I bring up for you?’ ‘Bring up Samuel,’ he said.12When the woman saw Samuel, she cried out at the top of her voice and said to Saul, ‘Why have you deceived me? You are Saul!’13The king said to her, ‘Don’t be afraid. What do you see?’ The woman said, ‘I see a ghostly figure* coming up out of the earth.’14‘What does he look like?’ he asked. ‘An old man wearing a robe is coming up,’ she said. Then Saul knew it was Samuel, and he bowed down and prostrated himself with his face to the ground.15Samuel said to Saul, ‘Why have you disturbed me by bringing me up?’ ‘I am in great distress,’ Saul said. ‘The Philistines are fighting against me, and God has departed from me. He no longer answers me, either by prophets or by dreams. So I have called on you to tell me what to do.’16Samuel said, ‘Why do you consult me, now that the Lord has departed from you and become your enemy?17The Lord has done what he predicted through me. The Lord has torn the kingdom out of your hands and given it to one of your neighbours – to David.18Because you did not obey the Lord or carry out his fierce wrath against the Amalekites, the Lord has done this to you today.19The Lord will deliver both Israel and you into the hands of the Philistines, and tomorrow you and your sons will be with me. The Lord will also give the army of Israel into the hands of the Philistines.’20Immediately Saul fell full length on the ground, filled with fear because of Samuel’s words. His strength was gone, for he had eaten nothing all that day and all that night.21When the woman came to Saul and saw that he was greatly shaken, she said, ‘Look, your servant has obeyed you. I took my life in my hands and did what you told me to do.22Now please listen to your servant and let me give you some food so that you may eat and have the strength to go on your way.’23He refused and said, ‘I will not eat.’ But his men joined the woman in urging him, and he listened to them. He got up from the ground and sat on the couch.24The woman had a fattened calf at the house, which she slaughtered at once. She took some flour, kneaded it and baked bread without yeast.25Then she set it before Saul and his men, and they ate. That same night they got up and left.
