«Non criticate…»

1 Accogliete chi è debole nella fede, senza mettervi a discutere le sue opinioni. 2 Per esempio, non discutete se sia bene o male mangiare la carne, che è stata offerta agli idoli. Voi potete anche credere che non ci sia niente di male a farlo, ma gli altri, la cui fede è più debole, possono pensare che sia una cosa sbagliata, e allora preferiranno verdure e legumi, piuttosto che quella carne. 3 Chi mangia di tutto con convinzione non deve disprezzare quelli che la pensano diversamente. Lo stesso vale per questi ultimi: non devono giudicare quelli che mangiano di tutto, perché Dio stesso li ha accettati come suoi figli. 4 Chi siete voi per giudicare i servi di Dio? Essi sono responsabili davanti a Dio, non davanti a voi. Ma sarà Dio stesso che li guiderà ad agire nel modo giusto, perché egli ha il potere di farlo. 5 Alcuni pensano che i cristiani debbano osservare certe festività ebraiche, come giorni speciali per adorare il Signore, mentre altri dicono che sono tutte storie, perché tutti i giorni sono uguali. Per questioni del genere, ognuno approfondisca le sue convinzioni personali. 6 Se rispettate certi giorni particolari per adorare il Signore, fate bene, perché è evidente che cercate di onorarlo, lo stesso vale per chi mangia, e per quel cibo ringrazia il Signore. Allo stesso modo è nel giusto chi, per scrupolo, non tocca nemmeno quel cibo, nel desiderio di piacere a Dio e anche lui ringrazia il Signore. 7 Non siamo noi i padroni di noi stessi; non possiamo decidere come ci piacerebbe vivere o come vorremmo morire. 8 Sia nella vita, che nella morte seguiamo il Signore. Vivi o morti siamo suoi. 9 Ecco perché Cristo morì e resuscitò, per poter essere il nostro padrone, sia nella vita che nella morte. 10 Ma tu, perché critichi tuo fratello? E tu, perché lo disprezzi? Ricordatevi che tutti dovremo comparire davanti al tribunale di Dio, per essere giudicati. Infatti è scritto: 11 «Comʼè vero che vivo», dice il Signore, «ogni ginocchio si piegherà davanti a me ed ogni lingua darà gloria a Dio». 12 Perciò, ognuno di noi dovrà rendere conto di se stesso a Dio. 13 Smettiamola quindi di criticarci a vicenda. Cerchiamo, invece, di vivere in modo da non essere dʼostacolo alla crescita spirituale del nostro fratello: che non ci veda fare cose che, secondo lui, sono sbagliate. 14 Io sono pienamente convinto, come ha detto il Signore Gesù, che non ci sia niente di male nelle cose per se stesse. Ma se qualcuno pensa che fare una certa cosa sia sbagliato, allora non deve farla, proprio perché per lui è peccato. 15 Se al vostro fratello dà fastidio ciò che voi mangiate, non date certo prova di amarlo, se continuate a mangiarne. Che il vostro cibo non rovini qualcuno, per cui Cristo è morto! 16 Non fate nulla, che provochi critiche contro di voi, anche se pensate di essere nel giusto. 17 Perché, dopo tutto, la cosa importante per noi cristiani, non sta nel mangiare o nel bere, ma nella giustizia, nella pace e nella gioia che vengono dallo Spirito Santo. 18 Chi serve Cristo in questo modo è gradito a Dio ed è stimato dagli uomini. 19 Cerchiamo, quindi, di darci da fare per ciò che contribuisce alla pace e ci fortifica insieme nella fede. 20 Non distruggete lʼopera di Dio per un pezzo di carne! Lo ripeto ancora nelle cose e nei cibi in se stessi, non cʼè niente di male; diventa male quando mangiarne, significa far cadere qualcuno in tentazione! 21 La soluzione migliore è di non mangiar carne, né bere vino, né fare qualsiasi altra cosa, che possa offendere un fratello e lo spinga a peccare, provocando in lui del risentimento, o influenzandolo a fare cose che, secondo lui, sono sbagliate. 22 Se hai una convinzione, tienila per te, davanti a Dio, senza parlarne ad altri, che potrebbero esserne offesi. Beato lʼuomo che non si sente colpevole facendo ciò che è giusto dal suo punto di vista. 23 Se qualcuno, invece, sente che una determinata cosa è sbagliata, allora è meglio che non la faccia! Se la fa, commette peccato, perché non agisce con la convinzione che viene dalla fede. Tutto ciò che si fa senza questa convinzione è peccato.

Do Not Pass Judgment on One Another

1 As for the one who is weak in faith, welcome him, but not to quarrel over opinions. 2 One person believes he may eat anything, while the weak person eats only vegetables. 3 Let not the one who eats despise the one who abstains, and let not the one who abstains pass judgment on the one who eats, for God has welcomed him. 4 Who are you to pass judgment on the servant of another? It is before his own master* that he stands or falls. And he will be upheld, for the Lord is able to make him stand. 5 One person esteems one day as better than another, while another esteems all days alike. Each one should be fully convinced in his own mind. 6 The one who observes the day, observes it in honor of the Lord. The one who eats, eats in honor of the Lord, since he gives thanks to God, while the one who abstains, abstains in honor of the Lord and gives thanks to God. 7 For none of us lives to himself, and none of us dies to himself. 8 For if we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord. So then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord’s. 9 For to this end Christ died and lived again, that he might be Lord both of the dead and of the living. 10 Why do you pass judgment on your brother? Or you, why do you despise your brother? For we will all stand before the judgment seat of God; 11 for it is written, “As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess* to God.” 12 So then each of us will give an account of himself to God.

Do Not Cause Another to Stumble

13 Therefore let us not pass judgment on one another any longer, but rather decide never to put a stumbling block or hindrance in the way of a brother. 14 I know and am persuaded in the Lord Jesus that nothing is unclean in itself, but it is unclean for anyone who thinks it unclean. 15 For if your brother is grieved by what you eat, you are no longer walking in love. By what you eat, do not destroy the one for whom Christ died. 16 So do not let what you regard as good be spoken of as evil. 17 For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking but of righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. 18 Whoever thus serves Christ is acceptable to God and approved by men. 19 So then let us pursue what makes for peace and for mutual upbuilding. 20 Do not, for the sake of food, destroy the work of God. Everything is indeed clean, but it is wrong for anyone to make another stumble by what he eats. 21 It is good not to eat meat or drink wine or do anything that causes your brother to stumble.* 22 The faith that you have, keep between yourself and God. Blessed is the one who has no reason to pass judgment on himself for what he approves. 23 But whoever has doubts is condemned if he eats, because the eating is not from faith. For whatever does not proceed from faith is sin.*
