1 Quando Gesù ebbe finito di dare queste istruzioni ai dodici discepoli, se ne andò a predicare nelle città che aveva in programma di visitare.

Gesù incoraggia Giovanni

2 Giovanni Battista, che in questo periodo si trovava in prigione, venne a sapere dei miracoli che il Messia stava compiendo, perciò mandò i suoi discepoli a chiedere a Gesù: 3 «Sei davvero tu quello che stiamo aspettando, o dobbiamo restare in attesa?» 4 «Tornate da Giovanni», rispose loro Gesù, «e riferitegli dei miracoli che mi avete visto compiere: 5 i ciechi hanno recuperato la vista, gli zoppi ora camminano, i lebbrosi sono guariti, i sordi odono ed i morti risorgono; e riferitegli anche che il Vangelo è annunciato ai poveri. 6 Poi dategli questo messaggio: “Beati coloro che non perdono la fede in me!”» 7 Quando i discepoli di Giovanni furono partiti, Gesù cominciò a parlare di lui alla folla. «Quando andaste nel deserto per vedere Giovanni, che cosa vi aspettavate di vedere? Una canna sbattuta dal vento? 8 Oppure immaginavate di vedere un uomo vestito come un principe in un ricco palazzo? 9 O piuttosto un profeta di Dio? Sì, Giovanni è un profeta, anzi, più di un profeta! 10 Perché Giovanni è lʼuomo a cui si riferisce questo passo delle Scritture: “Ecco il mio messaggero, io lo mando davanti a te per annunciare il tuo arrivo e preparare la gente a riceverti!” 11 Per la verità, di tutti gli uomini nati al mondo, non cʼè mai stato nessuno maggiore di Giovanni Battista. E, tuttavia, perfino il più piccolo nel Regno dei Cieli, è più grande di lui! 12 E dal giorno in cui Giovanni Battista cominciò a predicare e a battezzare fino ad ora, migliaia e migliaia di persone piene di zelo stanno affollandosi verso il Regno dei Cieli, 13 perché tutte le leggi e i profeti aspettavano il Messia. Poi è apparso Giovanni, 14 e se volete capire ciò che intendo, egli è Elia, quello che i profeti dicevano sarebbe venuto allʼinizio del Regno. 15 Se mai avete voluto ascoltare, ascoltate ora! 16 Che cosa dirò di questa generazione? Questa gente assomiglia a quei bambini che giocano e dicono ai loro amichetti: 17 “Vi abbiamo suonato della musica allegra e voi non avete ballato; abbiamo giocato ai funerali e voi non avete pianto!” 18 Perché di Giovanni Battista, che non beve vino e spesso digiuna, voi dite: “È matto!” 19 E di me, il Messia, che mangio e bevo, vi lagnate che sono un mangione e un beone, e che vado in giro con la peggior specie di peccatori! Ma la sapienza di Dio si rivela vera dai suoi frutti».

20 Poi Gesù cominciò a rimproverare le città dove aveva compiuto la maggior parte dei suoi miracoli, perché non si erano convertite a Dio. Diceva: 21 «Guai a te, Corazin; e guai a te, Betsaida! Perché, se i miracoli che ho compiuto nelle tue strade, li avessi compiuti nelle città malvagie di Tiro e Sidone, i loro abitanti si sarebbero pentiti da tempo con vergogna ed umiltà. 22 Perciò vi assicuro che, nel giorno del giudizio, la sentenza per Tiro e Sidone sarà più mite della vostra! 23 E tu, città di Cafarnao, credi forse che sarai innalzata fino al cielo? No di certo, finirai dritta allʼinferno! Perché, se i meravigliosi miracoli che ho fatto da te, li avessi compiuti a Sòdoma, quella città oggi esisterebbe ancora. 24 Perciò vi dico che nel giorno del giudizio la sentenza per Sòdoma sarà più mite della tua». 25 E Gesù pregò: «O Padre, Signore del cielo e della terra, ti ringrazio perché hai nascosto la verità a quelli che si reputano tanto sapienti e lʼhai rivelata ai bambini piccoli. 26 Sì, Padre, perché così ti è piaciuto. 27 Tutte le cose mi sono state affidate da mio Padre. Nessuno conosce il Figlio completamente, tranne il Padre. E nessuno conosce il Padre completamente, tranne il Figlio e quelli ai quali il Figlio lo rivela. 28 Venite da me tutti voi che lavorate sotto un pesante giogo; io vi darò riposo. 29 Prendete il mio giogo e imparate da me, lasciate che vʼinsegni, perché io sono umile e mite e da me troverete riposo per le vostre anime, perché io do soltanto pesi che non opprimono».

Messengers from John the Baptist

1 When Jesus had finished instructing his twelve disciples, he went on from there to teach and preach in their cities. 2 Now when John heard in prison about the deeds of the Christ, he sent word by his disciples 3 and said to him, “Are you the one who is to come, or shall we look for another?” 4 And Jesus answered them, “Go and tell John what you hear and see: 5 the blind receive their sight and the lame walk, lepers* are cleansed and the deaf hear, and the dead are raised up, and the poor have good news preached to them. 6 And blessed is the one who is not offended by me.” 7 As they went away, Jesus began to speak to the crowds concerning John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind? 8 What then did you go out to see? A man* dressed in soft clothing? Behold, those who wear soft clothing are in kings’ houses. 9 What then did you go out to see? A prophet?* Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. 10 This is he of whom it is written, “‘Behold, I send my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way before you.’ 11 Truly, I say to you, among those born of women there has arisen no one greater than John the Baptist. Yet the one who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. 12 From the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven has suffered violence,* and the violent take it by force. 13 For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John, 14 and if you are willing to accept it, he is Elijah who is to come. 15 He who has ears to hear,* let him hear. 16 “But to what shall I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling to their playmates, 17 “‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not mourn.’ 18 For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon.’ 19 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Look at him! A glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ Yet wisdom is justified by her deeds.”*

Woe to Unrepentant Cities

20 Then he began to denounce the cities where most of his mighty works had been done, because they did not repent. 21 “Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty works done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. 22 But I tell you, it will be more bearable on the day of judgment for Tyre and Sidon than for you. 23 And you, Capernaum, will you be exalted to heaven? You will be brought down to Hades. For if the mighty works done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day. 24 But I tell you that it will be more tolerable on the day of judgment for the land of Sodom than for you.”

Come to Me, and I Will Give You Rest

25 At that time Jesus declared, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to little children; 26 yes, Father, for such was your gracious will.* 27 All things have been handed over to me by my Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. 28 Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
