Chi è Gesù

1 Dopo queste cose, Gesù andò in Galilea. Voleva tenersi lontano dalla Giudea, dove i capi giudei stavano complottando per ucciderlo. 2 Era vicina la festa ebraica dei tabernacoli. 3 I fratelli di Gesù insistevano che andasse in Giudea in occasione della festa. «Così i tuoi discepoli vedranno i tuoi miracoli!» gli dicevano, scherzando. 4 «Non puoi diventare famoso, se continui a nasconderti così! Se sei davvero tanto grande, dimostralo al mondo!» 5 Evidentemente nemmeno i suoi fratelli credevano in lui. 6 Gesù allora rispose: «Per me non è ancora il momento giusto. Ma voi potete andare quando volete. 7 Infatti il mondo non può odiarvi; odia me, invece, perché lo accuso di peccato e di malvagità. 8 Andate pure alla festa, io verrò più tardi, quando sarà il momento». 9 Così Gesù rimase in Galilea. 10 Ma, partiti i fratelli, anche Gesù si recò alla festa, discretamente però, quasi di nascosto. 11 Intanto, i capi giudei lo cercavano e chiedevano in giro se qualcuno lo avesse visto. 12 Fra la folla, poi, era nata unʼaccesa discussione sul conto di Gesù. Alcuni dicevano: «È un uomo sincero». Altri invece: «Macché sincero! Non vedete che prende in giro la gente?» 13 Nessuno però aveva il coraggio di parlar bene di lui apertamente, per paura di rappresaglia da parte dei capi giudei. 14 A metà festa, Gesù salì al tempio e cominciò ad insegnare. 15 Nel sentirlo, i capi giudei restarono sorpresi. «Come fa a conoscere così bene le Scritture, senza avere mai frequentato le nostre scuole?» si chiedevano. 16 Allora Gesù disse loro: «Io non insegno basandomi sui miei pensieri, ma la mia sapienza viene da Dio, che mi ha mandato. 17 Se qualcuno di voi è pronto a fare la volontà di Dio, sʼaccorgerà senza dubbio se ciò che vʼinsegno viene da Dio o semplicemente da un mio punto di vista. 18 Chi espone le proprie idee, cerca la stima degli altri, ma chi cerca di onorare colui che lo ha mandato dice la verità. 19 Non è stato forse Mosè a darvi le leggi? Eppure nessuno di voi le mette in pratica! Perché cercate di uccidermi?» 20 La folla replicò: «Sei fuori di te! Chi è che cerca di ucciderti?» 21 Gesù rispose: «Ho fatto un solo miracolo, ho guarito un uomo di sabato, e per questo avete gridato allo scandalo! Anche voi, però, violate il riposo del sabato, quando rispettate la legge di Mosè sulla circoncisione. (Per la verità, questa tradizione della circoncisione è più antica della stessa legge di Mosè). Se il momento giusto per circoncidere i vostri bambini cade di sabato, voi non esitate a farlo; allora perché ce lʼavete con me per aver guarito completamente un uomo di sabato? 24 Non giudicate secondo le apparenze, ma giudicate con giusto giudizio!» 25 Alcuni abitanti di Gerusalemme osservarono: «Non è questo lʼuomo che cercano di uccidere? 26 Eppure qui predica in pubblico e nessuno gli dice niente! Che i nostri capi abbiano capito, dopo tutto, che è davvero lui il Cristo? 27 Ma come può essere? Sappiamo da dove viene questʼuomo. Invece, quando il Cristo verrà, nessuno saprà da dove». 28 Allora Gesù, mentre insegnava nel tempio, disse ad alta voce: «Dunque voi mi conoscete e sapete bene dove sono nato e cresciuto. In realtà non sono stato io a decidere di venire, ma sono stato mandato da Dio, che è pura verità, ma voi non lo conoscete. 29 Io, invece lo conosco, perché ero con lui, ed è stato lui a mandarmi da voi». 30 A queste parole i capi giudei cercarono di arrestarlo, ma nessuno gli mise le mani addosso, perché non era ancora venuto il suo momento. 31 Nel tempio, però, molte persone credettero in lui. «Dopo tutto», dicevano, «pensate, forse, che il Messia possa fare più miracoli di quanti ne abbia fatti lui?» 32 Quando i Farisei seppero quello che la gente diceva di Gesù, dʼaccordo con i capi sacerdoti, mandarono delle guardie ad arrestarlo. 33 Ma Gesù disse loro: «Devo restare qui ancora un poʼ. Poi tornerò da Dio che mi ha mandato. 34 Mi cercherete, ma non mi troverete, né potrete venire dove io sarò!» 35 I capi giudei rimasero sconcertati. «Dove vorrà mai andare?» si chiedevano. «Forse pensa di lasciare Israele e di andare a predicare ai Giudei dispersi in altri paesi, oppure agli stranieri? 36 Che cosa mai avrà voluto intendere, dicendo: “Mi cercherete e non mi troverete e non potrete venire dove sono io?”» 37 Lʼultimo giorno, al culmine della festa, Gesù gridò alle folle: «Chi ha sete, venga da me e beva. 38 Da chi crede in me, come dice la Scrittura, sgorgheranno fiumi dʼacqua viva». 39 Gesù si riferiva allo Spirito Santo, tutti quelli che avrebbero creduto in lui lo avrebbero ricevuto. Ma a quel tempo lo Spirito non era stato ancora dato, perché Gesù non era ancora ritornato nella sua gloria in cielo. 40 A queste parole alcune persone fra la folla dissero: «Questʼuomo è sicuramente il Profeta!» 41 Altri dicevano: «È lui il Messia!» Altri ancora: «Ma non può essere! Il Messia non può venire dalla Galilea, perché le Scritture dicono chiaramente che nascerà dalla stirpe reale di Davide, a Betlemme, il villaggio dove Davide stesso nacque». 43 Le opinioni della folla erano dunque contrastanti. 44 Anzi, alcuni volevano addirittura arrestarlo, ma nessuno lo toccò. 45 Le guardie del tempio, che erano state mandate per arrestarlo, ritornarono dai capi sacerdoti e dai Farisei. «Perché non lo avete portato qui?» chiesero quelli. 46 Le guardie si strinsero nelle spalle: «Dice cose talmente straordinarie! Non avevamo mai sentito nessuno parlare come lui…» 47 «Così, anche voi vi siete lasciati abbindolare eh?!» commentarono i Farisei con ironia. 48 «Ce nʼè, forse, soltanto uno, fra noi Giudei o Farisei, che abbia creduto che quello sia il Messia? 49 Lo crede questa stupida gente, che non conosce le Scritture. Sia maledetta!» 50 Allora Nicodemo si fece avanti. Ve lo ricordate? Era uno dei capi giudei, quello che si era recato segretamente di notte a parlare con Gesù. 51 «Ma… è legale condannare un uomo, prima ancora che sia stato processato?» chiese. 52 Gli altri risposero: «Sei forse anche tu un miserabile Galileo? Controlla nelle Scritture e vedrai per conto tuo: non può venire nessun profeta dalla Galilea!» 53 Poi ciascuno se ne tornò a casa propria.

Jesus at the Feast of Booths

1 After this Jesus went about in Galilee. He would not go about in Judea, because the Jews* were seeking to kill him. 2 Now the Jews’ Feast of Booths was at hand. 3 So his brothers* said to him, “Leave here and go to Judea, that your disciples also may see the works you are doing. 4 For no one works in secret if he seeks to be known openly. If you do these things, show yourself to the world.” 5 For not even his brothers believed in him. 6 Jesus said to them, “My time has not yet come, but your time is always here. 7 The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify about it that its works are evil. 8 You go up to the feast. I am not* going up to this feast, for my time has not yet fully come.” 9 After saying this, he remained in Galilee. 10 But after his brothers had gone up to the feast, then he also went up, not publicly but in private. 11 The Jews were looking for him at the feast, and saying, “Where is he?” 12 And there was much muttering about him among the people. While some said, “He is a good man,” others said, “No, he is leading the people astray.” 13 Yet for fear of the Jews no one spoke openly of him. 14 About the middle of the feast Jesus went up into the temple and began teaching. 15 The Jews therefore marveled, saying, “How is it that this man has learning,* when he has never studied?” 16 So Jesus answered them, “My teaching is not mine, but his who sent me. 17 If anyone’s will is to do God’s* will, he will know whether the teaching is from God or whether I am speaking on my own authority. 18 The one who speaks on his own authority seeks his own glory; but the one who seeks the glory of him who sent him is true, and in him there is no falsehood. 19 Has not Moses given you the law? Yet none of you keeps the law. Why do you seek to kill me?” 20 The crowd answered, “You have a demon! Who is seeking to kill you?” 21 Jesus answered them, “I did one work, and you all marvel at it. 22 Moses gave you circumcision (not that it is from Moses, but from the fathers), and you circumcise a man on the Sabbath. 23 If on the Sabbath a man receives circumcision, so that the law of Moses may not be broken, are you angry with me because on the Sabbath I made a man’s whole body well? 24 Do not judge by appearances, but judge with right judgment.”

Can This Be the Christ?

25 Some of the people of Jerusalem therefore said, “Is not this the man whom they seek to kill? 26 And here he is, speaking openly, and they say nothing to him! Can it be that the authorities really know that this is the Christ? 27 But we know where this man comes from, and when the Christ appears, no one will know where he comes from.” 28 So Jesus proclaimed, as he taught in the temple, “You know me, and you know where I come from. But I have not come of my own accord. He who sent me is true, and him you do not know. 29 I know him, for I come from him, and he sent me.” 30 So they were seeking to arrest him, but no one laid a hand on him, because his hour had not yet come. 31 Yet many of the people believed in him. They said, “When the Christ appears, will he do more signs than this man has done?”

Officers Sent to Arrest Jesus

32 The Pharisees heard the crowd muttering these things about him, and the chief priests and Pharisees sent officers to arrest him. 33 Jesus then said, “I will be with you a little longer, and then I am going to him who sent me. 34 You will seek me and you will not find me. Where I am you cannot come.” 35 The Jews said to one another, “Where does this man intend to go that we will not find him? Does he intend to go to the Dispersion among the Greeks and teach the Greeks? 36 What does he mean by saying, ‘You will seek me and you will not find me,’ and, ‘Where I am you cannot come’?”

Rivers of Living Water

37 On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in me, as* the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’” 39 Now this he said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive, for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

Division Among the People

40 When they heard these words, some of the people said, “This really is the Prophet.” 41 Others said, “This is the Christ.” But some said, “Is the Christ to come from Galilee? 42 Has not the Scripture said that the Christ comes from the offspring of David, and comes from Bethlehem, the village where David was?” 43 So there was a division among the people over him. 44 Some of them wanted to arrest him, but no one laid hands on him. 45 The officers then came to the chief priests and Pharisees, who said to them, “Why did you not bring him?” 46 The officers answered, “No one ever spoke like this man!” 47 The Pharisees answered them, “Have you also been deceived? 48 Have any of the authorities or the Pharisees believed in him? 49 But this crowd that does not know the law is accursed.” 50 Nicodemus, who had gone to him before, and who was one of them, said to them, 51 “Does our law judge a man without first giving him a hearing and learning what he does?” 52 They replied, “Are you from Galilee too? Search and see that no prophet arises from Galilee.”
