1Ed ora tocca a voi, ricchi. Piangete e urlate per tutti i guai che stanno per piombarvi addosso!2Le vostre ricchezze sono marcite e i vostri bei vestiti sono stati rosi dalle tarme.3Il vostro oro e il vostro argento è come se si fossero arrugginiti: hanno perso il loro valore, ma nel giudizio saranno una prova contro di voi; la loro ruggine vi divorerà le carni come un fuoco.4Voi avete accumulato ricchezze in questi ultimi giorni prima del giudizio di Dio, perciò ascoltate! Ecco i lamenti dei braccianti dei vostri campi, che avete defraudato della loro paga. Le loro grida sono giunte alle orecchie del Signore degli eserciti.5Voi avete vissuto qui sulla terra in mezzo al lusso e vi siete abbandonati a tutti i piaceri: vi siete ingrassati come bestie proprio quando state per essere macellati.6Avete condannato e ucciso uomini giusti, che non possono difendersi da voi.7Ma, per quanto riguarda voi, cari fratelli che aspettate il ritorno del Signore, siate pazienti, come il contadino che aspetta le piogge di primavera e dʼautunno per avere il suo prezioso raccolto.8Siate pazienti e fatevi coraggio, perché il giorno del ritorno del Signore è ormai vicino.
Gesù è alle porte!
9Fratelli, non criticatevi a vicenda, per non dover essere giudicati. Vedete, il Signore, il grande Giudice, è già alle porte.10Prendete come esempio di pazienza nella sofferenza i profeti di Dio.11Noi diciamo che, siccome a suo tempo gli sono rimasti fedeli, adesso sono felici e beati, anche se hanno sofferto molto per questo. Voi avete sentito parlare della grande pazienza di Giobbe e sapete bene quel che il Signore gli riservò alla fine, perché il nostro Dio è pieno di amore e misericordia.12Ma soprattutto, cari fratelli, non giurate, né per il cielo, né per la terra, né per qualsiasi altra cosa: dite semplicemente«sì» quando è sì, e«no» quando è no. Così non peccherete e non sarete condannati da Dio.13Cʼè qualcuno fra voi che soffre? Preghi! Cʼè qualcuno, invece, che sta bene? Ringrazi continuamente con canti il Signore.14Qualcuno è ammalato? Mandi a chiamare i responsabili della chiesa che preghino e versino un poʼ dʼolio su di lui, invocando il Signore che lo guarisca.15La loro preghiera, se fatta con fede, lo risanerà, perché il Signore lo farà stare bene. Inoltre, se il malato ha commesso qualche peccato, il Signore lo perdonerà.16Confessatevi a vicenda i vostri peccati e pregate gli uni per gli altri, perché siate guariti. La preghiera sincera del giusto, fatta con fervore, è molto potente e dà risultati meravigliosi.17Il profeta Elia era un comune mortale come noi, eppure pregò tanto che non piovesse, che non piovve sulla terra per tre anni e mezzo!18Poi pregò di nuovo, questa volta perché piovesse, ed ecco che cadde la pioggia, lʼerba tornò verde e la terra diede di nuovo i suoi frutti.19Fratelli miei, se qualcuno di voi sʼallontana dalla verità di Dio e un altro lo riporta sulla retta via,20sappiate che chi aiuta un peccatore a lasciare la strada sbagliata, non solo salverà unʼanima dalla morte, ma getterà un velo di perdono sopra un gran numero di peccati. Warning to the Rich
1Come now, you rich, weep and howl for the miseries that are coming upon you.2Your riches have rotted and your garments are moth-eaten.3Your gold and silver have corroded, and their corrosion will be evidence against you and will eat your flesh like fire. You have laid up treasure in the last days.4Behold, the wages of the laborers who mowed your fields, which you kept back by fraud, are crying out against you, and the cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord of hosts.5You have lived on the earth in luxury and in self-indulgence. You have fattened your hearts in a day of slaughter.6You have condemned and murdered the righteous person. He does not resist you.
Patience in Suffering
7Be patient, therefore, brothers,* until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, being patient about it, until it receives the early and the late rains.8You also, be patient. Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand.9Do not grumble against one another, brothers, so that you may not be judged; behold, the Judge is standing at the door.10As an example of suffering and patience, brothers, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord.11Behold, we consider those blessed who remained steadfast. You have heard of the steadfastness of Job, and you have seen the purpose of the Lord, how the Lord is compassionate and merciful.12But above all, my brothers, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or by any other oath, but let your “yes” be yes and your “no” be no, so that you may not fall under condemnation.
The Prayer of Faith
13Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing praise.14Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord.15And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.16Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.*17Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed fervently that it might not rain, and for three years and six months it did not rain on the earth.18Then he prayed again, and heaven gave rain, and the earth bore its fruit.19My brothers, if anyone among you wanders from the truth and someone brings him back,20let him know that whoever brings back a sinner from his wandering will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins.
