1 È Dio stesso che ha avuto pietà di noi e ci ha dato questo meraviglioso compito, perciò noi non ci perdiamo dʼanimo. 2 Non vogliamo imbrogliare la gente, né abbiamo alcun interesse a menare per il naso nessuno; tanto meno cerchiamo di falsificare ciò che insegna la Bibbia. Non sappiamo che farcene di tutti questi metodi vergognosi. Quando parliamo, ci sentiamo alla presenza di Dio, perciò diciamo la verità, sottoponendoci al giudizio di tutti quelli che ci conoscono. 3 Se poi il Vangelo che predichiamo è ancora misterioso per qualcuno, lo è per quelli che sono sulla via della perdizione. 4 Satana, che è il dio di questo mondo corrotto, li ha resi ciechi, incapaci di vedere la gloriosa luce del Vangelo che splende su di loro, incapaci di comprendere ciò che predichiamo, e cioè: il meraviglioso messaggio della gloria di Cristo, immagine di Dio. 5 Non ce ne andiamo in giro a parlare di noi stessi, ma di Gesù Cristo come Signore. Tutto ciò che diciamo di noi è che siamo vostri servi, per amore di Gesù. 6 Perché Dio che ha detto: «Splenda la luce nelle tenebre», ha fatto risplendere in noi la sua luce per farci capire che è la sua gloria ciò che brilla sul volto di Gesù Cristo.

7 Ma questo prezioso tesoro, questa luce e potenza, che ora splende dentro di noi, si trova in un recipiente molto fragile, e cioè il nostro corpo, perché così sia ben chiaro che questa potenza straordinaria viene da Dio e non da noi. 8 Dobbiamo sopportare tribolazioni di ogni genere, ma non siamo ridotti agli estremi. Siamo preoccupati, ma non disperati, 9 perseguitati, ma non abbandonati; colpiti, ma non uccisi. 10 Portiamo sempre in noi la morte di Gesù, perché si manifesti nel nostro corpo anche la sua vita. 11 E così noi viviamo in continuo pericolo di morte, perché serviamo il Signore, ma questo ci offre continuamente lʼoccasione di dimostrare la potenza di Gesù Cristo nei nostri corpi mortali. 12 E se per noi predicare vuol dire affrontare la morte, per voi significa avere la vita eterna. 13 Noi parliamo con franchezza di ciò che crediamo (fiduciosi che Dio agisce per noi), proprio come dice il Salmo: «Ho creduto, perciò ho parlato». Noi pure crediamo e perciò parliamo. 14 Siamo convinti infatti che lo stesso Dio che resuscitò il Signore Gesù, resusciterà anche noi insieme con Gesù, e con voi ci farà comparire alla sua presenza, 15 perché tutte queste nostre sofferenze sono a vostro vantaggio. E più sono quelli che si convertono a Cristo, più saranno quelli che lo ringrazieranno per lʼabbondanza della sua grazia; e così il Signore sarà glorificato. 16 Noi dunque non ci perdiamo dʼanimo. Anche se i nostri corpi vanno in sfacelo, la nostra forza interiore, che viene dal Signore, cresce di giorno in giorno. 17 Dopo tutto, queste nostre sofferenze sono ben poca cosa e non dureranno a lungo. Anzi, grazie a questo breve periodo di difficoltà, avremo una vita gloriosa, che non ha paragoni, e per sempre! 18 E così non ci soffermiamo su ciò che vediamo adesso, ma su ciò che non vediamo, perché le cose che si vedono passano, mentre quelle che non si vedono durano per sempre.

The Light of the Gospel

1 Therefore, having this ministry by the mercy of God,* we do not lose heart. 2 But we have renounced disgraceful, underhanded ways. We refuse to practice* cunning or to tamper with God’s word, but by the open statement of the truth we would commend ourselves to everyone’s conscience in the sight of God. 3 And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. 4 In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. 5 For what we proclaim is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, with ourselves as your servants* for Jesus’ sake. 6 For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

7 But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us. 8 We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; 9 persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; 10 always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies. 11 For we who live are always being given over to death for Jesus’ sake, so that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our mortal flesh. 12 So death is at work in us, but life in you. 13 Since we have the same spirit of faith according to what has been written, “I believed, and so I spoke,” we also believe, and so we also speak, 14 knowing that he who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus and bring us with you into his presence. 15 For it is all for your sake, so that as grace extends to more and more people it may increase thanksgiving, to the glory of God. 16 So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self* is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. 17 For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, 18 as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.
