Vivendo em harmonia

1 Ainda que acreditemos que para o Senhor é indiferente que façamos ou não essas coisas, nós os que somos fortes não podemos contudo continuar a praticá-las para agradarmos a nós mesmos; porque temos de ter em consideração as dúvidas e os receios dos outros. 2 Procuremos agradar aos outros, não a nós próprios; façamos aquilo que pode contribuir para a edificação da sua vida espiritual. 3 Nem Cristo procurou o seu próprio prazer. Como disse o Salmista: “Os insultos dos teus inimigos têm caído sobre mim.” 4 Porque tudo o que anteriormente foi escrito, é para nos ensinar, para que pela paciência e pelo consolo das Escrituras, aguardemos com esperança as promessas de Deus. 5 Possa Deus, que vos dá paciência e consolo, ajudar-vos a viver em harmonia uns com os outros, na mesma atitude que Cristo Jesus teve. 6 E então todos podem, a uma só voz, dar glória a Deus, o Pai de nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo. 7 Sendo assim, recebam-se afetuosamente uns aos outros, tal como Cristo vos recebeu, e assim Deus será glorificado. 8 E lembrem-se de que Cristo veio como um servo dos judeus, a fim de mostrar que Deus é verdadeiro e confirma as promessas que fez aos nossos antepassados. 9 Ele veio também para que os gentios possam dar glória a Deus pela misericórdia que lhes manifestou. É isto o que está escrito: “Por isso, dar-te-ei graças entre as nações, e cantarei louvores ao teu nome.”* 10 E noutra passagem: “Alegrem-se, ó nações, com o povo de Deus!” 11 E ainda noutro local: “Louvem o Senhor, todas as nações! Que todos os povos lhe deem louvores!” 12 E o profeta Isaías disse: “Haverá uma raiz para a família de Jessé, que será rei sobre as nações; estes porão nele as suas esperanças.” 13 Que Deus, que vos deu esperança, vos mantenha felizes e cheios da paz que nasce pela fé, através do poder do Espírito Santo nas vossas vidas.

Paulo, o mensageiro aos gentios

14 Eu estou certo, irmãos, de que estão cheios de bondade, para que com o conhecimento que já têm possam aconselhar-se uns aos outros. 15 Apesar disso, tive a ousadia para vos escrever sobre estes pontos, convencido de que o que vos falta é sobretudo que estes assuntos estejam sempre bem presentes na vossa mente. 16 Pois, pela graça de Deus, fui chamado a ser ministro de Jesus Cristo junto de vocês, os gentios, servindo-o como sacerdote do evangelho, para que sejam apresentados a Deus como um sacrifício inteiramente aceite por ele, santificado pelo Espírito Santo. 17 Por isso, me é lícito ter esta grande satisfação, por tudo aquilo que Cristo Jesus fez por meu intermédio no meu serviço para Deus. 18 Porque nem sequer ousaria abrir a boca, se Cristo não tivesse usado a minha vida para levar os gentios a Deus, ganhando-os através da minha mensagem e da forma como vivi diante deles; 19 e ainda pelos milagres feitos por meu intermédio como sinais vindos de Deus, tudo isto pelo poder do Espírito Santo. E desta maneira tenho pregado o evangelho de Cristo, por toda a parte, desde Jerusalém até ao Ilírico. 20 O meu grande desejo tem sido ir sempre mais longe, pregando de preferência onde o nome de Cristo ainda não tenha sido ouvido, e não edificando sobre um fundamento posto por outro. 21 Tenho seguido o plano de que falam as Escrituras, onde Isaías diz: “Aqueles que nunca antes tinham ouvido falar dele agora o verão e compreenderão.” 22 Eis no fundo a verdadeira razão porque não pude ir visitar-vos mais cedo.

23 Mas agora acabei, enfim, o meu trabalho nestas regiões e estou desejoso de ir ter convosco, após todos estes longos anos de espera. 24 Porque estou a fazer planos para uma viagem a Espanha e de caminho tenciono ficar em Roma um tempo, para gozar da vossa convivência, depois do que alguns de vocês poderão até ajudar-me no prosseguimento da minha viagem. 25 Mas antes disso tenho de ir a Jerusalém levar uma oferta para os santos dali. 26 Pois pareceu bem aos cristãos da Macedónia e da Acaia enviar um donativo para os seus irmãos de Jerusalém, que têm atravessado tempos bem difíceis. 27 Eles tiveram muita alegria em fazê-lo, porque sentem que têm como que uma dívida para com os cristãos de Jerusalém, pois os gentios foram participantes das bênçãos espirituais dos judeus. E sentem que o mínimo que poderão fazer em retribuição será enviar à igreja de Jerusalém uma ajuda material. 28 Portanto, logo que tenha executado essa tarefa, entregando o fruto da sua gratidão, irei ver-vos no meu caminho para Espanha. 29 Estou certo de que nessa visita que vos farei hei de levar-vos todas as riquezas espirituais da bênção de Cristo. 30 E peço-vos muito, meus irmãos, em nome do Senhor Jesus Cristo e pela afeição com que o Espírito Santo nos une, que participem comigo, pela oração, no combate que irei travar. 31 Orem para que eu fique livre dos que na Judeia se recusam a crer em Cristo. E também que os cristãos de Jerusalém aceitem bem a minha missão junto deles. 32 E assim, se for a vontade de Deus, poderei então ir ter convosco mais feliz, para juntos nos encorajarmos uns aos outros. 33 Que Deus, a fonte da verdadeira paz, esteja com todos. Amém!

The Example of Christ

1 We who are strong have an obligation to bear with the failings of the weak, and not to please ourselves. 2 Let each of us please his neighbor for his good, to build him up. 3 For Christ did not please himself, but as it is written, “The reproaches of those who reproached you fell on me.” 4 For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope. 5 May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus, 6 that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. 7 Therefore welcome one another as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God.

Christ the Hope of Jews and Gentiles

8 For I tell you that Christ became a servant to the circumcised to show God’s truthfulness, in order to confirm the promises given to the patriarchs, 9 and in order that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy. As it is written, “Therefore I will praise you among the Gentiles, and sing to your name.” 10 And again it is said, “Rejoice, O Gentiles, with his people.” 11 And again, “Praise the Lord, all you Gentiles, and let all the peoples extol him.” 12 And again Isaiah says, “The root of Jesse will come, even he who arises to rule the Gentiles; in him will the Gentiles hope.” 13 May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.

Paul the Minister to the Gentiles

14 I myself am satisfied about you, my brothers,* that you yourselves are full of goodness, filled with all knowledge and able to instruct one another. 15 But on some points I have written to you very boldly by way of reminder, because of the grace given me by God 16 to be a minister of Christ Jesus to the Gentiles in the priestly service of the gospel of God, so that the offering of the Gentiles may be acceptable, sanctified by the Holy Spirit. 17 In Christ Jesus, then, I have reason to be proud of my work for God. 18 For I will not venture to speak of anything except what Christ has accomplished through me to bring the Gentiles to obedience—by word and deed, 19 by the power of signs and wonders, by the power of the Spirit of God—so that from Jerusalem and all the way around to Illyricum I have fulfilled the ministry of the gospel of Christ; 20 and thus I make it my ambition to preach the gospel, not where Christ has already been named, lest I build on someone else’s foundation, 21 but as it is written, “Those who have never been told of him will see, and those who have never heard will understand.”

Paul’s Plan to Visit Rome

22 This is the reason why I have so often been hindered from coming to you. 23 But now, since I no longer have any room for work in these regions, and since I have longed for many years to come to you, 24 I hope to see you in passing as I go to Spain, and to be helped on my journey there by you, once I have enjoyed your company for a while. 25 At present, however, I am going to Jerusalem bringing aid to the saints. 26 For Macedonia and Achaia have been pleased to make some contribution for the poor among the saints at Jerusalem. 27 For they were pleased to do it, and indeed they owe it to them. For if the Gentiles have come to share in their spiritual blessings, they ought also to be of service to them in material blessings. 28 When therefore I have completed this and have delivered to them what has been collected,* I will leave for Spain by way of you. 29 I know that when I come to you I will come in the fullness of the blessing* of Christ. 30 I appeal to you, brothers, by our Lord Jesus Christ and by the love of the Spirit, to strive together with me in your prayers to God on my behalf, 31 that I may be delivered from the unbelievers in Judea, and that my service for Jerusalem may be acceptable to the saints, 32 so that by God’s will I may come to you with joy and be refreshed in your company. 33 May the God of peace be with you all. Amen.
