A ressurreição

1 Contudo, na madrugada de domingo, ao levarem os perfumes para o túmulo, 2 verificaram que a enorme pedra que tapava a entrada tinha sido removida. 3 Entraram, mas o corpo do Senhor Jesus tinha desaparecido. 4 Ficaram perplexas! De súbito, apareceram dois homens vestidos de roupas reluzentes. 5 As mulheres ficaram cheias de medo, com os olhos postos no chão, e aqueles homens perguntaram-lhes: “Porque procuram no túmulo quem afinal está vivo? 6 Ele não está aqui, ressuscitou! Não se lembram do que vos disse na Galileia, 7 que o Filho do Homem seria traído, entregue a gente má e crucificado, e que tornaria a viver ao terceiro dia?” 8 Então elas lembraram-se! 9 E voltaram a correr para Jerusalém, para contar aos onze apóstolos e aos outros o que tinha acontecido. As mulheres que foram ao túmulo eram Maria Madalena, Joana, Maria (mãe de Tiago) e várias outras. 11 Tudo aquilo, porém, parecia uma história sem sentido e não acreditaram. 12 Mesmo assim, Pedro foi a correr até ao túmulo para averiguar o que se passava. Curvando-se, espreitou e, ao ver os lençóis abandonados, voltou para casa, interrogando-se sobre o teria sucedido.

No caminho de Emaús

13 Naquele mesmo dia, dois dos discípulos de Jesus iam a caminho da aldeia de Emaús que ficava a uns 11 quilómetros de distância de Jerusalém. 14 E comentavam entre si tudo o que acontecera. 15 De repente Jesus apareceu e juntou-se a eles, caminhando ao seu lado. 16 Mas os seus olhos estavam impossibilitados de o reconhecer. 17 “O que é que vão aí a discutir pelo caminho?” perguntou-lhes. E eles pararam de caminhar; estavam tristes. 18 Um deles, Cleopas, respondeu: “Deves ser a única pessoa em toda a cidade de Jerusalém que não sabe das terríveis coisas que ali sucederam nestes últimos dias.” 19 “Que coisas?”, perguntou Jesus. Eles retorquiram: “O que aconteceu a Jesus de Nazaré, um profeta de Deus que fez milagres poderosos. Era um grande ensinador e altamente considerado tanto por Deus como pelos homens. 20 Mas os principais sacerdotes e os nossos líderes prenderam-no e entregaram-no ao governador romano para ser condenado à morte e crucificaram-no. 21 E nós pensávamos que ele era o Cristo que vinha para resgatar Israel! Além disto que aconteceu há três dias, 22 umas mulheres do nosso grupo dos seus discípulos foram de manhã cedo ao túmulo, onde ele foi colocado, 23 e regressaram com a notícia de que o seu corpo desaparecera e de que tinham visto lá uns anjos que lhes disseram que Jesus se encontrava vivo! 24 Alguns dos nossos homens foram a correr ver o que se teria passado e não há dúvida de que o corpo de Jesus desapareceu, tal como as mulheres contaram.” 25 Então Jesus disse-lhes: “Vocês não estão a ser sensatos! É assim tão difícil crer em tudo o que os profetas escreveram nas Escrituras? 26 Não foi claramente predito por eles que o Cristo teria de sofrer todas estas coisas antes de entrar na sua glória?” 27 E fez-lhes compreender as Escrituras, começando com os livros de Moisés e dos profetas, explicando o que esses textos diziam a seu respeito. 28 Entretanto, aproximavam-se da localidade para onde iam. Jesus parecia querer prosseguir no caminho, 29 mas pediram-lhe que ficasse com eles, porque se estava a fazer tarde, e ele acedeu. 30 Quando se sentaram para comer, ele pediu a bênção de Deus sobre o alimento e, pegando num pequeno pão, partiu-o e distribuiu-o por eles. 31 Foi então que, de repente, os seus olhos se abriram e o reconheceram. E naquele preciso momento ele desapareceu. 32 Começaram, pois, a lembrar-se de como os seus corações se tinham animado, enquanto lhes falava, explicando-lhes as Escrituras pela estrada fora. 33 Levantaram-se nesse momento e voltaram a Jerusalém, para se encontrarem com os onze discípulos e os companheiros destes que os receberam com estas palavras: 34 “Não há dúvida de que o Senhor ressuscitou! Apareceu a Simão!” 35 Os dois de Emaús contaram como Jesus lhes aparecera também, enquanto seguiam pela estrada, e como o tinham reconhecido quando partiu o pão.

Jesus aparece aos discípulos

36 Enquanto assim falavam, o próprio Jesus surgiu no meio deles, saudando-os: “A paz seja convosco!” 37 Mas todo o grupo ficou muito assustado, pensando que via um fantasma. 38 “Porque se assustam?”, perguntou ele. “Porque é que duvidam que seja realmente eu? 39 Olhem as minhas mãos; olhem para os meus pés! Estão a ver que sou eu mesmo. Toquem-me e verifiquem que não sou nenhum fantasma. Porque os fantasmas não têm carne nem ossos, como veem que eu tenho!” 40 Depois de lhe dizer isto, mostrou-lhes as mãos e os pés. 41 Ainda indecisos, eles contemplavam-no, cheios de espanto e alegria. Então Jesus perguntou-lhes: “Têm aqui alguma coisa que se possa comer?” 42 Deram-lhe um pedaço de peixe assado. 43 E pôs-se a comê-lo enquanto o observavam. 44 Então disse-lhes: “Quando andava convosco, não se lembram de vos ter dito que tudo o que se escreveu acerca de mim, nos livros de Moisés, nos escritos dos profetas e nos Salmos, teria de realizar-se?” 45 Então abriu-lhes o entendimento para compreenderem as Escrituras. 46 E disse-lhes: “Estava escrito que o Cristo deveria sofrer, morrer e ressuscitar ao terceiro dia. 47 E que em seu nome se pregaria o arrependimento e o perdão dos pecados em todas as nações, começando por Jerusalém. 48 Vocês viram como esses escritos sagrados se cumpriram. 49 Agora vou mandar-vos a promessa que o meu Pai vos fez. Permaneçam aqui na cidade até que vocês sejam revestidos de poder do céu!”

A ascensão

50 Jesus levou-os pelo caminho de Betânia. E levantando as mãos para o céu, abençoou-os. 51 Então afastou-se deles e elevou-se até ao céu. 52 Eles adoraram-no e regressaram a Jerusalém, cheios de alegria. 53 E estavam continuamente no templo, louvando a Deus.

The Resurrection

1 But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they went to the tomb, taking the spices they had prepared. 2 And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb, 3 but when they went in they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. 4 While they were perplexed about this, behold, two men stood by them in dazzling apparel. 5 And as they were frightened and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them, “Why do you seek the living among the dead? 6 He is not here, but has risen. Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee, 7 that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men and be crucified and on the third day rise.” 8 And they remembered his words, 9 and returning from the tomb they told all these things to the eleven and to all the rest. 10 Now it was Mary Magdalene and Joanna and Mary the mother of James and the other women with them who told these things to the apostles, 11 but these words seemed to them an idle tale, and they did not believe them. 12 But Peter rose and ran to the tomb; stooping and looking in, he saw the linen cloths by themselves; and he went home marveling at what had happened.

On the Road to Emmaus

13 That very day two of them were going to a village named Emmaus, about seven miles* from Jerusalem, 14 and they were talking with each other about all these things that had happened. 15 While they were talking and discussing together, Jesus himself drew near and went with them. 16 But their eyes were kept from recognizing him. 17 And he said to them, “What is this conversation that you are holding with each other as you walk?” And they stood still, looking sad. 18 Then one of them, named Cleopas, answered him, “Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?” 19 And he said to them, “What things?” And they said to him, “Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, a man who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, 20 and how our chief priests and rulers delivered him up to be condemned to death, and crucified him. 21 But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things happened. 22 Moreover, some women of our company amazed us. They were at the tomb early in the morning, 23 and when they did not find his body, they came back saying that they had even seen a vision of angels, who said that he was alive. 24 Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but him they did not see.” 25 And he said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! 26 Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?” 27 And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself. 28 So they drew near to the village to which they were going. He acted as if he were going farther, 29 but they urged him strongly, saying, “Stay with us, for it is toward evening and the day is now far spent.” So he went in to stay with them. 30 When he was at table with them, he took the bread and blessed and broke it and gave it to them. 31 And their eyes were opened, and they recognized him. And he vanished from their sight. 32 They said to each other, “Did not our hearts burn within us while he talked to us on the road, while he opened to us the Scriptures?” 33 And they rose that same hour and returned to Jerusalem. And they found the eleven and those who were with them gathered together, 34 saying, “The Lord has risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon!” 35 Then they told what had happened on the road, and how he was known to them in the breaking of the bread.

Jesus Appears to His Disciples

36 As they were talking about these things, Jesus himself stood among them, and said to them, “Peace to you!” 37 But they were startled and frightened and thought they saw a spirit. 38 And he said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts arise in your hearts? 39 See my hands and my feet, that it is I myself. Touch me, and see. For a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have.” 40 And when he had said this, he showed them his hands and his feet. 41 And while they still disbelieved for joy and were marveling, he said to them, “Have you anything here to eat?” 42 They gave him a piece of broiled fish,* 43 and he took it and ate before them. 44 Then he said to them, “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.” 45 Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, 46 and said to them, “Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, 47 and that repentance for* the forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. 48 You are witnesses of these things. 49 And behold, I am sending the promise of my Father upon you. But stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.”

The Ascension

50 And he led them out as far as Bethany, and lifting up his hands he blessed them. 51 While he blessed them, he parted from them and was carried up into heaven. 52 And they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy, 53 and were continually in the temple blessing God.
