1Depois de Jeconias, da rainha-mãe, dos chefes da administração pública, dos anciãos e dos artífices terem sido deportados para a Babilónia por Nabucodonozor, Jeremias escreveu-lhes uma carta de Jerusalém endereçada aos sacerdotes, aos profetas e a todo o povo.3Mandou a carta por intermédio de Elasá, filho de Safã, e de Gemarias, filho de Hilquias, quando estes foram à Babilónia como embaixadores do rei Zedequias junto de Nabucodonozor. Era este o conteúdo da carta:4O SENHOR dos exércitos, o Deus de Israel, envia esta mensagem a todos os cativos de Jerusalém que foram exilados para a Babilónia.5“Construam as vossas casas, não tenham receio de fazer projetos a longo prazo; plantem pomares, pois hão de ficar aí muitos anos.6Podem casar e ter filhos; procurem maridos e mulheres para estes últimos e façam-se rodear de netos. Multipliquem-se e não decaiam!7Trabalhem para a paz e a prosperidade da Babilónia. Orem por ela, porque se a Babilónia tiver paz, vocês também terão.”8Porque o SENHOR dos exércitos, o Deus de Israel, diz: “Não deixem os falsos profetas e os bruxos que estão no vosso meio enganar-vos. Não prestem atenção aos sonhos e visões que eles inventam.9Pois profetizam mentiras em meu nome. Eu não os enviei, diz o SENHOR.”10Diz ainda o SENHOR: “Quando passarem 70 anos na Babilónia, irei em vossa ajuda, cumprirei a minha promessa e vos trarei para casa.11Porque não me esqueci dos planos que fiz a vosso respeito, planos de bem e não de mal, para vos dar um futuro e uma esperança.12Nesses dias, quando orarem a mim, eu vos ouvirei.13Encontrar-me-ão quando me buscarem de todo o vosso coração, com toda a diligência.14Sim, diz o SENHOR, serei achado por vocês e porei fim à vossa escravidão; restaurarei a vossa situação; juntar-vos-ei das nações para onde vos enviei e hei de trazer-vos de novo para a vossa terra natal.15Mas agora, porque aceitam falsos profetas, no vosso meio, que dizem que o SENHOR os enviou?16Vou mandar guerra, fome e pestilências sobre o povo que aqui ficou em Jerusalém, sobre os vossos parentes que não foram exilados para a Babilónia e sobre o rei que se senta no trono de David.17Farei com eles o que se faz a figos podres que já não se podem comer.18Lançá-los-ei pelo mundo fora e em todas as nações onde os colocarei hão de ser amaldiçoados, desprezados e humilhados.19Porque se recusaram ouvir-me, ainda que lhes tenha falado múltiplas vezes pela voz dos meus profetas.”20Por isso, ouçam a palavra do SENHOR, todos os habitantes de Jerusalém exilados na Babilónia!21O SENHOR dos exércitos, o Deus de Israel, diz isto acerca dos vossos falsos profetas, de Acabe, filho de Colaías, e Zedequias, filho de Maaseias: “Vos declaram mentiras em meu próprio nome. Vejam, entregá-los-ei a Nabucodonozor, rei da Babilónia, e ele os matará à vossa frente.22O seu destino tornar-se-á num provérbio, significativo de todo o mal, de tal maneira que quem quiser amaldiçoar outra pessoa dirá: ‘O SENHOR te faça como fez a Zedequias e a Acabe, a quem o rei da Babilónia queimou vivos!’23Porque estes homens fizeram uma coisa terrível entre o meu povo. Cometeram adultérios com as mulheres dos seus próximos e mentiram em meu nome. Sei tudo isto, porque vejo tudo o que acontece!, diz o SENHOR.”
A mensagem para Semaías
24E diz isto a Semaías, o neelamita:25O SENHOR dos exércitos, o Deus de Israel, diz: Sei que escreveste uma carta ao sacerdote Sofonias, filho de Maaseias, e enviaste cópias a todos os outros sacerdotes, assim como a toda a gente em Jerusalém. Nessa carta dizias a Sofonias:26O SENHOR te designou sacerdote, para substituíres Jeoiada como responsável do templo do SENHOR. Será da tua responsabilidade prender todo o louco que se considera profeta, encarcerá-lo e pô-lo incomunicável.27Porque é que não fizeste nada com esse pretenso profeta que é Jeremias de Anatote?28Porque ele escreveu-nos para aqui, para a Babilónia, dizendo que o nosso cativeiro seria longo e que devíamos construir casas com carácter permanente, e fazer planos a longo prazo para a nossa vida aqui, e que devíamos plantar pomares, porque haveríamos de comer dos seus frutos durante muito tempo.29Sofonias levou, entretanto, esta mesma carta a Jeremias e leu-lha.30Foi então que o SENHOR deu a Jeremias esta mensagem:31“Manda uma carta aberta a todos os exilados da Babilónia e diz-lhes: O SENHOR diz que, visto que Semaías, o neelamita, profetizou, quando eu não lhe transmiti nada, e vos enganou, levando-vos a acreditar em mentiras,32castigá-lo-ei, a ele e à sua família. Nenhum dos seus descendentes verá o bem que espero dar ao meu povo, porque vos ensinou a rebelarem-se contra o SENHOR.”

Jeremiah’s Letter to the Exiles
1These are the words of the letter that Jeremiah the prophet sent from Jerusalem to the surviving elders of the exiles, and to the priests, the prophets, and all the people, whom Nebuchadnezzar had taken into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon.2This was after King Jeconiah and the queen mother, the eunuchs, the officials of Judah and Jerusalem, the craftsmen, and the metal workers had departed from Jerusalem.3The letter was sent by the hand of Elasah the son of Shaphan and Gemariah the son of Hilkiah, whom Zedekiah king of Judah sent to Babylon to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon. It said:4“Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, to all the exiles whom I have sent into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon:5Build houses and live in them; plant gardens and eat their produce.6Take wives and have sons and daughters; take wives for your sons, and give your daughters in marriage, that they may bear sons and daughters; multiply there, and do not decrease.7But seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the Lord on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare.8For thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Do not let your prophets and your diviners who are among you deceive you, and do not listen to the dreams that they dream,*9for it is a lie that they are prophesying to you in my name; I did not send them, declares the Lord.10“For thus says the Lord: When seventy years are completed for Babylon, I will visit you, and I will fulfill to you my promise and bring you back to this place.11For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare* and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.12Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you.13You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart.14I will be found by you, declares the Lord, and I will restore your fortunes and gather you from all the nations and all the places where I have driven you, declares the Lord, and I will bring you back to the place from which I sent you into exile.15“Because you have said, ‘The Lord has raised up prophets for us in Babylon,’16thus says the Lord concerning the king who sits on the throne of David, and concerning all the people who dwell in this city, your kinsmen who did not go out with you into exile:17‘Thus says the Lord of hosts, behold, I am sending on them sword, famine, and pestilence, and I will make them like vile figs that are so rotten they cannot be eaten.18I will pursue them with sword, famine, and pestilence, and will make them a horror to all the kingdoms of the earth, to be a curse, a terror, a hissing, and a reproach among all the nations where I have driven them,19because they did not pay attention to my words, declares the Lord, that I persistently sent to you by my servants the prophets, but you would not listen, declares the Lord.’20Hear the word of the Lord, all you exiles whom I sent away from Jerusalem to Babylon:21‘Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, concerning Ahab the son of Kolaiah and Zedekiah the son of Maaseiah, who are prophesying a lie to you in my name: Behold, I will deliver them into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and he shall strike them down before your eyes.22Because of them this curse shall be used by all the exiles from Judah in Babylon: “The Lord make you like Zedekiah and Ahab, whom the king of Babylon roasted in the fire,”23because they have done an outrageous thing in Israel, they have committed adultery with their neighbors’ wives, and they have spoken in my name lying words that I did not command them. I am the one who knows, and I am witness, declares the Lord.’”
Shemaiah’s False Prophecy
24To Shemaiah of Nehelam you shall say:25“Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: You have sent letters in your name to all the people who are in Jerusalem, and to Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah the priest, and to all the priests, saying,26‘The Lord has made you priest instead of Jehoiada the priest, to have charge in the house of the Lord over every madman who prophesies, to put him in the stocks and neck irons.27Now why have you not rebuked Jeremiah of Anathoth who is prophesying to you?28For he has sent to us in Babylon, saying, “Your exile will be long; build houses and live in them, and plant gardens and eat their produce.”’”29Zephaniah the priest read this letter in the hearing of Jeremiah the prophet.30Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah:31“Send to all the exiles, saying, ‘Thus says the Lord concerning Shemaiah of Nehelam: Because Shemaiah had prophesied to you when I did not send him, and has made you trust in a lie,32therefore thus says the Lord: Behold, I will punish Shemaiah of Nehelam and his descendants. He shall not have anyone living among this people, and he shall not see the good that I will do to my people, declares the Lord, for he has spoken rebellion against the Lord.’”
