O servo do Senhor

1 Aqui está o meu servo, que eu sustento; o meu escolhido em quem a minha alma tem prazer. Pus o meu Espírito sobre ele e julgará as nações. 2 Não gritará nem se porá a discutir alto nas praças públicas. 3 Não pisará a cana trilhada nem apagará o pavio que ainda fumega. Há de promover a justiça. 4 Não ficará satisfeito enquanto a verdade e a justiça não tiverem prevalecido em toda a Terra, sem ver a sua Lei estabelecida entre os povos das ilhas que nele têm a sua esperança.” 5 O SENHOR Deus, que criou os céus e os estendeu, que criou a Terra e tudo quanto há nela, que dá vida, respiração e espírito a todas as criaturas no mundo, é aquele que diz: 6 “Eu, o SENHOR, chamei-te para dar prova da minha retidão; hei de guardar-te e amparar-te, pois dei-te ao meu povo como uma confirmação pessoal da minha aliança com eles. Serás igualmente uma luz para guiar as nações até mim. 7 Abrirás os olhos aos cegos e soltarás os que jazem nas prisões, em trevas e desespero. 8 Eu sou o SENHOR! Este é o meu nome! Não darei a minha glória a mais ninguém! Não consinto em partilhar louvores com ídolos esculpidos! 9 Tudo o que profetizei se realizou e agora tornarei a profetizar e a dizer-vos o que se vai dar no futuro, antes que aconteça.”

Um cântico de louvor ao Senhor

10 Cantem ao SENHOR um novo cântico! Cantem-lhe louvores todos os que vivem na Terra, ainda que seja nas paragens mais remotas! Que também o próprio mar lhe cante! Que lhe dirijam louvores, cantando, todos os que moram bem longe, para além do mar! 11 Juntem-se igualmente a esse coro, Quedar e Sela, cidades do deserto, e também os habitantes das montanhas! 12 Que nas ilhas distantes se glorifique o SENHOR! Cantem sobre o seu forte poder! 13 O SENHOR sairá como um poderoso guerreiro, cheio de zelo, combaterá os seus inimigos. Dará um grande brado de guerra e sujeitará os seus adversários. 14 “Por muito tempo me calei e estive silencioso, mas agora gritarei com força, como uma mulher que está a ter um filho. 15 Nivelarei as montanhas e as elevações, farei secar a densa vegetação. Os cursos de água e as lagoas se tornarão terra firme. 16 Guiarei os cegos por um caminho por onde nunca andaram, por vias que ignoravam. Farei com que as trevas se tornem luz diante deles. Alisarei o caminho que têm de pisar. Nunca me esquecerei deles. 17 Mas os que confiam nos ídolos e lhes chamam deuses ficarão imensamente desapontados, voltarão para trás, envergonhados.

Israel é cego e surdo

18 Oh! Como vocês foram cegos e surdos para com Deus! Ouçam, ó surdos! Cegos, olhem e vejam! 19 Quem no mundo inteiro é tão cego como o meu próprio povo que está designado para ser o meu mensageiro da verdade? Quem é tão cego como aquele que me foi dedicado, o servo do SENHOR? 20 Vocês veem e compreendem o que é reto, mas não lhe prestam atenção nem o praticam. Ouvem, mas não querem escutar.” 21 O SENHOR enalteceu a sua Lei, tornou-a verdadeiramente gloriosa. Através dela quis mostrar ao mundo que é reto. 22 Mas afinal foram roubados, escravizados, feitos prisioneiros, aniquilados à traição, tornados o joguete de toda a gente, sem ninguém para vos libertar; foram despojados e ninguém diz: “Restituam!” 23 Não haverá sequer um de vocês que tire uma lição em relação ao passado e considere seriamente a ruína que vos espera no futuro? 24 Afinal, quem foi que permitiu que Israel tivesse sido saqueado, que os descendentes de Jacob tivessem sido feridos? Não foi justamente o SENHOR contra quem pecámos, recusando andar nos caminhos que indicava e não querendo ouvir os seus mandamentos? 25 Foi por isso que o SENHOR derramou sobre eles toda a sua indignação e a sua ira. Mesmo assim, apesar da força das guerras e do fogo que os destruiu, não quiseram saber a verdadeira razão de tudo isso.

The Lord’s Chosen Servant

1 Behold my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen, in whom my soul delights; I have put my Spirit upon him; he will bring forth justice to the nations. 2 He will not cry aloud or lift up his voice, or make it heard in the street; 3 a bruised reed he will not break, and a faintly burning wick he will not quench; he will faithfully bring forth justice. 4 He will not grow faint or be discouraged* till he has established justice in the earth; and the coastlands wait for his law. 5 Thus says God, the Lord, who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and what comes from it, who gives breath to the people on it and spirit to those who walk in it: 6 “I am the Lord; I have called you* in righteousness; I will take you by the hand and keep you; I will give you as a covenant for the people, a light for the nations, 7 to open the eyes that are blind, to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon, from the prison those who sit in darkness. 8 I am the Lord; that is my name; my glory I give to no other, nor my praise to carved idols. 9 Behold, the former things have come to pass, and new things I now declare; before they spring forth I tell you of them.”

Sing to the Lord a New Song

10 Sing to the Lord a new song, his praise from the end of the earth, you who go down to the sea, and all that fills it, the coastlands and their inhabitants. 11 Let the desert and its cities lift up their voice, the villages that Kedar inhabits; let the habitants of Sela sing for joy, let them shout from the top of the mountains. 12 Let them give glory to the Lord, and declare his praise in the coastlands. 13 The Lord goes out like a mighty man, like a man of war he stirs up his zeal; he cries out, he shouts aloud, he shows himself mighty against his foes. 14 For a long time I have held my peace; I have kept still and restrained myself; now I will cry out like a woman in labor; I will gasp and pant. 15 I will lay waste mountains and hills, and dry up all their vegetation; I will turn the rivers into islands,* and dry up the pools. 16 And I will lead the blind in a way that they do not know, in paths that they have not known I will guide them. I will turn the darkness before them into light, the rough places into level ground. These are the things I do, and I do not forsake them. 17 They are turned back and utterly put to shame, who trust in carved idols, who say to metal images, “You are our gods.”

Israel’s Failure to Hear and See

18 Hear, you deaf, and look, you blind, that you may see! 19 Who is blind but my servant, or deaf as my messenger whom I send? Who is blind as my dedicated one,* or blind as the servant of the Lord? 20 He sees many things, but does not observe them; his ears are open, but he does not hear. 21 The Lord was pleased, for his righteousness’ sake, to magnify his law and make it glorious. 22 But this is a people plundered and looted; they are all of them trapped in holes and hidden in prisons; they have become plunder with none to rescue, spoil with none to say, “Restore!” 23 Who among you will give ear to this, will attend and listen for the time to come? 24 Who gave up Jacob to the looter, and Israel to the plunderers? Was it not the Lord, against whom we have sinned, in whose ways they would not walk, and whose law they would not obey? 25 So he poured on him the heat of his anger and the might of battle; it set him on fire all around, but he did not understand; it burned him up, but he did not take it to heart.
