1O rei Hirão de Tiro tinha sido sempre um grande admirador de David. Por isso, quando soube que Salomão, o filho de David, era o novo rei de Israel, enviou embaixadores para lhe apresentarem as suas felicitações e bons votos.2Salomão respondeu-lhe com uma proposta sobre o templo que tinha a intenção de construir.3“O meu pai David não pôde construí-lo por causa das inúmeras guerras que se sucederam, até que por fim o SENHOR, seu Deus, trouxe paz ao seu reinado.4No entanto, o SENHOR, meu Deus, deu-me agora descanso de todos os lados; não tenho inimigos externos nem rebeliões internas.5Por isso, estou a planear construir um templo ao SENHOR, meu Deus, de acordo com as instruções que deu ao meu pai quanto ao que eu deveria fazer. O SENHOR disse-lhe: ‘Teu filho, que colocarei no teu trono, construir-me-á um templo.’6Portanto, peço-te que me dês apoio neste projeto. Envia os teus lenhadores às montanhas do Líbano para que cortem cedros para me mandares. Da minha parte, os meus homens trabalharão com os teus e pagarei o salário que exigires. Como sabes, ninguém em Israel sabe cortar tão bem madeira como vocês os sidónios!”
O material para o templo
7Hirão ficou muito contente com a mensagem de Salomão: “Louvado seja o SENHOR por ter dado a David um filho tão sábio para ser rei da grande nação de Israel!”8Depois mandou a resposta a Salomão: “Recebi a tua mensagem e farei como me pediste quanto à madeira. Posso fornecer-te tanto cedro como cipreste.9Os meus homens farão transportar os toros de madeira das montanhas do Líbano até ao Mediterrâneo, amarrando-os em jangadas. Estas serão conduzidas ao longo da costa até ao local que designares. Aí os toros serão descarregados e entregues aos teus cuidados. Pagar-me-ás com alimentos para a minha casa.”10Assim, Hirão forneceu a Salomão toda a madeira de cedro e de cipreste de que ele precisou.11Em retorno Salomão enviou-lhe um pagamento anual de 3250 toneladas de trigo para a sua casa e ainda 440 000 litros de azeite puro.12Desta forma, o SENHOR deu a Salomão a sabedoria de que ele necessitava como lhe prometeu. Hirão e Salomão fizeram uma aliança formal de paz.13O rei recrutou 30 000 operários de todo o Israel.14Mandou-os para o Líbano, 10 000 por mês, de maneira que cada homem estava um mês no Líbano e dois em casa. Adonirão superintendeu a esse trabalho de exterior.15O rei tinha também 70 000 homens que trabalhavam como carregadores e 80 000 outros que trabalhavam nas montanhas, cortando pedra.16Além destes, tinha ainda 3300 capatazes.17Os canteiros na montanha prepararam e talharam grandes blocos de pedra, um trabalho que custou muito caro, para os alicerces do templo.18Homens de Gebal ajudaram os operários de Salomão e os de Hirão a cortar os toros de madeira e a preparar as pranchas, assim como a talhar as pedras para o templo.

Preparations for Building the Temple
1* Now Hiram king of Tyre sent his servants to Solomon when he heard that they had anointed him king in place of his father, for Hiram always loved David.2And Solomon sent word to Hiram,3“You know that David my father could not build a house for the name of the Lord his God because of the warfare with which his enemies surrounded him, until the Lord put them under the soles of his feet.4But now the Lord my God has given me rest on every side. There is neither adversary nor misfortune.5And so I intend to build a house for the name of the Lord my God, as the Lord said to David my father, ‘Your son, whom I will set on your throne in your place, shall build the house for my name.’6Now therefore command that cedars of Lebanon be cut for me. And my servants will join your servants, and I will pay you for your servants such wages as you set, for you know that there is no one among us who knows how to cut timber like the Sidonians.”7As soon as Hiram heard the words of Solomon, he rejoiced greatly and said, “Blessed be the Lord this day, who has given to David a wise son to be over this great people.”8And Hiram sent to Solomon, saying, “I have heard the message that you have sent to me. I am ready to do all you desire in the matter of cedar and cypress timber.9My servants shall bring it down to the sea from Lebanon, and I will make it into rafts to go by sea to the place you direct. And I will have them broken up there, and you shall receive it. And you shall meet my wishes by providing food for my household.”10So Hiram supplied Solomon with all the timber of cedar and cypress that he desired,11while Solomon gave Hiram 20,000 cors* of wheat as food for his household, and 20,000* cors of beaten oil. Solomon gave this to Hiram year by year.12And the Lord gave Solomon wisdom, as he promised him. And there was peace between Hiram and Solomon, and the two of them made a treaty.13King Solomon drafted forced labor out of all Israel, and the draft numbered 30,000 men.14And he sent them to Lebanon, 10,000 a month in shifts. They would be a month in Lebanon and two months at home. Adoniram was in charge of the draft.15Solomon also had 70,000 burden-bearers and 80,000 stonecutters in the hill country,16besides Solomon’s 3,300 chief officers who were over the work, who had charge of the people who carried on the work.17At the king’s command they quarried out great, costly stones in order to lay the foundation of the house with dressed stones.18So Solomon’s builders and Hiram’s builders and the men of Gebal did the cutting and prepared the timber and the stone to build the house.
