Jesus betet für seine Jünger

1 Nachdem Jesus das gesagt hatte, blickte er zum Himmel auf und betete: „Vater, die Stunde ist gekommen. Offenbare die Herrlichkeit deines Sohnes, damit auch der Sohn deine Herrlichkeit offenbar machen kann. 2 Du hast ihm die Macht über alle Menschen anvertraut, damit er denen, die du ihm gegeben hast, ewiges Leben schenkt. 3 Das ewige Leben besteht ja in der Gemeinschaft mit dir, dem einzig wahren Gott, und mit dem, den du gesandt hast, Jesus Christus. 4 Ich habe deine Herrlichkeit hier auf der Erde sichtbar gemacht. Ich habe das Werk vollendet, das du mir aufgetragen hast. 5 Vater, gib mir erneut die Herrlichkeit, die ich bei dir hatte, bevor es diese Welt gab. 6 Ich habe den Menschen, die du mir aus der Welt gegeben hast, deinen Namen bekannt gemacht.* Sie gehörten dir, und du hast sie mir gegeben. Sie haben sich nach deinem Wort gerichtet. 7 Sie wissen jetzt, dass alles, was du mir gegeben hast, von dir kommt. 8 Denn ich habe ihnen das weitergegeben, was du mir gesagt hast. Und sie haben es angenommen und erkannt, dass ich wirklich von dir gekommen bin. Sie glauben auch daran, dass du mich gesandt hast. 9 Für sie bete ich. Ich bitte nicht für die Welt, sondern für die, die du mir gegeben hast, denn sie gehören dir. 10 Ja, alles, was mein ist, gehört dir, und was dein ist, gehört mir. – Und ich werde in ihnen erkannt und geehrt. 11 Bald bin ich nicht mehr in der Welt, ich komme ja zu dir. Sie aber sind in der Welt. Heiliger Vater, bewahre sie in der Nähe zu dir, wie du es mir geschenkt hast, damit sie eins sind so wie wir. 12 Solange ich bei ihnen war, habe ich sie so in deinem Namen bewahrt. Ich habe über sie gewacht, dass nicht einer von ihnen verloren ging – außer dem, der den Weg des Verderbens gegangen ist, so wie es die Schrift vorausgesagt hat. 13 Doch jetzt komme ich zu dir. Aber dies alles wollte ich sagen, solange ich noch hier in der Welt bin, damit sie ganz von meiner Freude erfüllt sind. 14 Ich habe ihnen deine Botschaft weitergegeben. Nun hasst sie die Welt, weil sie nicht mehr zu ihr gehören, so wie auch ich kein Teil von ihr bin. 15 Ich bitte dich nicht darum, sie aus der Welt wegzunehmen, aber ich bitte dich, sie vor dem Bösen zu bewahren. 16 Sie gehören nicht zur Welt, genauso wie ich nicht zu ihr gehöre. 17 Mach sie durch die Wahrheit zu Menschen, die ganz für dich da sind! Dein Wort ist Wahrheit. 18 So wie du mich in die Welt gesandt hast, habe auch ich sie in die Welt gesandt. 19 Und für sie gebe ich mich dir hin, damit auch sie durch die Wahrheit dir hingegeben sind. 20 Ich bitte aber nicht nur für sie, sondern auch für die Menschen, die durch ihr Wort an mich glauben werden. 21 Ich bete, dass sie alle eins sind, und zwar so wie du, Vater, in mir bist und ich in dir, so sollen sie in uns eins sein. Dann wird die Welt glauben, dass du mich gesandt hast. 22 Ich habe ihnen die Herrlichkeit geschenkt, die du mir gegeben hast, damit sie eins sind, so wie wir eins sind – 23 ich in ihnen und du in mir, damit sie die vollkommene Einheit gewinnen und damit die Welt erkennt, dass du mich gesandt und sie geliebt hast, so wie ich von dir geliebt bin. 24 Vater, ich will, dass alle, die du mir gegeben hast, auch dort bei mir sind, wo ich bin. Sie sollen nämlich meine Herrlichkeit sehen, die du mir geschenkt hast. Denn schon vor Gründung der Welt hast du mich geliebt. 25 Gerechter Vater, die Welt kennt dich nicht, aber ich kenne dich; und diese hier haben erkannt, dass du mich gesandt hast. 26 Ich habe ihnen deinen Namen bekannt gemacht und werde das auch weiterhin tun. Ich tue das, damit die Liebe, die du zu mir hast, auch sie erfüllt und ich selbst in ihnen bin.“

Jesus prays for himself

1 After Jesus said this, he looked towards heaven and prayed. He said, ‘Father, the time has come. Bring glory to your Son. Then your Son will bring glory to you. 2 You gave him authority over all people. He gives eternal life to all those you have given him. 3 And what is eternal life? It is knowing you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent. 4 I have brought you glory on earth. I have finished the work you gave me to do. 5 So now, Father, give glory to me in heaven where your throne is. Give me the glory I had with you before the world began.

Jesus prays for his disciples

6 ‘I have shown you to the disciples you gave me out of the world. They were yours. You gave them to me. And they have obeyed your word. 7 Now they know that everything you have given me comes from you. 8 I gave them the words you gave me. And they accepted them. They knew for certain that I came from you. They believed that you sent me. 9 I pray for them. I am not praying for the world. I am praying for those you have given me, because they are yours. 10 All I have is yours, and all you have is mine. Glory has come to me because of my disciples. 11 I will not remain in the world any longer. But they are still in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, keep them safe by the power of your name. It is the name you gave me. Keep them safe so they can be one, just as you and I are one. 12 While I was with them, I guarded them. I kept them safe through the name you gave me. None of them has been lost, except the one who was heading for ruin. It happened so that Scripture would come true. 13 ‘I am coming to you now. But I say these things while I am still in the world. I say them so that those you gave me can have the same joy that I have. 14 I have given them your word. The world has hated them. That’s because they are not part of the world any more than I am. 15 I do not pray that you will take them out of the world. I pray that you will keep them safe from the evil one. 16 They do not belong to the world, just as I do not belong to it. 17 Use the truth to make them holy. Your word is truth. 18 You sent me into the world. In the same way, I have sent them into the world. 19 I make myself holy for them so that they too can be made holy by the truth.

Jesus prays for all believers

20 ‘I do not pray only for them. I pray also for everyone who will believe in me because of their message. 21 Father, I pray they will be one, just as you are in me and I am in you. I want them also to be in us. Then the world will believe that you have sent me. 22 I have given them the glory you gave me. I did this so they would be one, just as we are one. 23 I will be in them, just as you are in me. This is so that they may be brought together perfectly as one. Then the world will know that you sent me. It will also show the world that you have loved those you gave me, just as you have loved me. 24 ‘Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am. I want them to see my glory, the glory you have given me. You gave it to me because you loved me before the world was created. 25 ‘Father, you are holy. The world does not know you, but I know you. Those you have given me know you have sent me. 26 I have shown you to them. And I will continue to show you to them. Then the love you have for me will be in them. I myself will be in them.’
