A Renovação da Aliança em Siquém

1 Então Josué reuniu todas as tribos de Israel em Siquém. Convocou as autoridades, os líderes, os juízes e os oficiais de Israel, e eles compareceram diante de Deus. 2 Josué disse a todo o povo: “Assim diz o SENHOR, o Deus de Israel: ‘Há muito tempo, os seus antepassados, inclusive Terá, pai de Abraão e de Naor, viviam além do Eufrates* e prestavam culto a outros deuses. 3 Mas eu tirei seu pai Abraão da terra que fica além do Eufrates e o conduzi por toda a Canaã e lhe dei muitos descendentes. Dei-lhe Isaque, 4 e a Isaque dei Jacó e Esaú. A Esaú dei os montes de Seir, mas Jacó e seus filhos desceram para o Egito. 5 “ ‘Então enviei Moisés e Arão e feri os egípcios com pragas, com as quais os castiguei, e depois tirei vocês de lá. 6 Quando tirei os seus antepassados do Egito, vocês vieram para o mar, e os egípcios os perseguiram com carros de guerra e cavaleiros* até o mar Vermelho. 7 Mas os seus antepassados clamaram a mim, e eu coloquei trevas entre vocês e os egípcios; fiz voltar o mar sobre eles e os encobrir. Vocês viram com os seus próprios olhos o que eu fiz com os egípcios. Depois disso vocês viveram no deserto longo tempo. 8 “ ‘Eu os trouxe para a terra dos amorreus que viviam a leste do Jordão. Eles lutaram contra vocês, mas eu os entreguei nas suas mãos. Eu os destruí diante de vocês, e vocês se apossaram da terra deles. 9 Quando Balaque, rei de Moabe, filho de Zipor, se preparava para lutar contra Israel, mandou buscar Balaão, filho de Beor, para lançar maldição sobre vocês. 10 Mas eu não quis ouvir Balaão, de modo que ele os abençoou vez após vez, e eu os livrei das mãos dele. 11 “ ‘Depois vocês atravessaram o Jordão e chegaram a Jericó. Os chefes de Jericó lutaram contra vocês, assim como os amorreus, os ferezeus, os cananeus, os hititas, os girgaseus, os heveus e os jebuseus, mas eu os entreguei nas mãos de vocês. 12 Eu lhes causei pânico* para expulsá-los de diante de vocês, como fiz aos dois reis amorreus. Não foram a espada e o arco que lhes deram a vitória. 13 Foi assim que dei a vocês uma terra que não cultivaram e cidades que vocês não construíram. Nelas vocês moram e comem de vinhas e olivais que não plantaram’. 14 “Agora temam o SENHOR e sirvam-no com integridade e fidelidade. Joguem fora os deuses que os seus antepassados adoraram além do Eufrates e no Egito e sirvam ao SENHOR. 15 Se, porém, não agrada a vocês servir ao SENHOR, escolham hoje a quem irão servir, se aos deuses que os seus antepassados serviram além do Eufrates, ou aos deuses dos amorreus, em cuja terra vocês estão vivendo. Mas eu e a minha família serviremos ao SENHOR”. 16 Então o povo respondeu: “Longe de nós abandonar o SENHOR para servir outros deuses! 17 Foi o próprio SENHOR, o nosso Deus, que nos tirou, a nós e a nossos pais, do Egito, daquela terra de escravidão, e realizou aquelas grandes maravilhas diante dos nossos olhos. Ele nos protegeu no caminho e entre as nações pelas quais passamos. 18 Além disso, o SENHOR expulsou de diante de nós todas as nações, inclusive os amorreus, que viviam nesta terra. Nós também serviremos ao SENHOR, porque ele é o nosso Deus”. 19 Josué disse ao povo: “Vocês não têm condições de servir ao SENHOR. Ele é Deus santo! É Deus zeloso! Ele não perdoará a rebelião e o pecado de vocês. 20 Se abandonarem o SENHOR e servirem a deuses estrangeiros, ele se voltará contra vocês e os castigará. Mesmo depois de ter sido bondoso com vocês, ele os exterminará”. 21 O povo, porém, respondeu a Josué: “De maneira nenhuma! Nós serviremos ao SENHOR”. 22 Disse então Josué: “Vocês são testemunhas contra vocês mesmos de que escolheram servir ao SENHOR”. “Somos”, responderam eles. 23 Disse Josué: “Agora, então, joguem fora os deuses estrangeiros que estão com vocês e voltem-se de coração para o SENHOR, o Deus de Israel”. 24 E o povo disse a Josué: “Serviremos ao SENHOR, o nosso Deus, e lhe obedeceremos”. 25 Naquele dia Josué firmou um acordo com o povo em Siquém e lhe deu decretos e leis. 26 Josué registrou essas coisas no Livro da Lei de Deus. Depois ergueu uma grande pedra ali, sob a Grande Árvore, perto do santuário do SENHOR. 27 Então disse ele a todo o povo: “Vejam esta pedra! Ela será uma testemunha contra nós, pois ouviu todas as palavras que o SENHOR nos disse. Será uma testemunha contra vocês, caso sejam infiéis ao seu Deus”.

A Morte de Josué

28 Depois Josué despediu o povo, e cada um foi para a sua propriedade. 29 Passado algum tempo, Josué, filho de Num, servo do SENHOR, morreu. Tinha cento e dez anos de idade. 30 E o sepultaram na terra que tinha recebido por herança, em Timnate-Sera, nos montes de Efraim, ao norte do monte Gaás. 31 Israel serviu ao SENHOR durante toda a vida de Josué e dos líderes que lhe sobreviveram e que sabiam de tudo o que o SENHOR fizera em favor de Israel. 32 Os ossos de José, que os israelitas haviam trazido do Egito, foram enterrados em Siquém, no quinhão de terra que Jacó havia comprado dos filhos de Hamor, pai de Siquém, por cem peças de prata*. Aquele terreno tornou-se herança dos descendentes de José. 33 Sucedeu também que Eleazar, filho de Arão, morreu e foi sepultado em Gibeá, que fora dada a seu filho Fineias, nos montes de Efraim.

The Covenant Renewal at Shechem

1 Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel to Shechem and summoned the elders, the heads, the judges, and the officers of Israel. And they presented themselves before God. 2 And Joshua said to all the people, “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, ‘Long ago, your fathers lived beyond the Euphrates,* Terah, the father of Abraham and of Nahor; and they served other gods. 3 Then I took your father Abraham from beyond the River* and led him through all the land of Canaan, and made his offspring many. I gave him Isaac. 4 And to Isaac I gave Jacob and Esau. And I gave Esau the hill country of Seir to possess, but Jacob and his children went down to Egypt. 5 And I sent Moses and Aaron, and I plagued Egypt with what I did in the midst of it, and afterward I brought you out. 6 “Then I brought your fathers out of Egypt, and you came to the sea. And the Egyptians pursued your fathers with chariots and horsemen to the Red Sea. 7 And when they cried to the Lord, he put darkness between you and the Egyptians and made the sea come upon them and cover them; and your eyes saw what I did in Egypt. And you lived in the wilderness a long time. 8 Then I brought you to the land of the Amorites, who lived on the other side of the Jordan. They fought with you, and I gave them into your hand, and you took possession of their land, and I destroyed them before you. 9 Then Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab, arose and fought against Israel. And he sent and invited Balaam the son of Beor to curse you, 10 but I would not listen to Balaam. Indeed, he blessed you. So I delivered you out of his hand. 11 And you went over the Jordan and came to Jericho, and the leaders of Jericho fought against you, and also the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Girgashites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites. And I gave them into your hand. 12 And I sent the hornet before you, which drove them out before you, the two kings of the Amorites; it was not by your sword or by your bow. 13 I gave you a land on which you had not labored and cities that you had not built, and you dwell in them. You eat the fruit of vineyards and olive orchards that you did not plant.’

Choose Whom You Will Serve

14 “Now therefore fear the Lord and serve him in sincerity and in faithfulness. Put away the gods that your fathers served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord. 15 And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the Lord, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” 16 Then the people answered, “Far be it from us that we should forsake the Lord to serve other gods, 17 for it is the Lord our God who brought us and our fathers up from the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery, and who did those great signs in our sight and preserved us in all the way that we went, and among all the peoples through whom we passed. 18 And the Lord drove out before us all the peoples, the Amorites who lived in the land. Therefore we also will serve the Lord, for he is our God.” 19 But Joshua said to the people, “You are not able to serve the Lord, for he is a holy God. He is a jealous God; he will not forgive your transgressions or your sins. 20 If you forsake the Lord and serve foreign gods, then he will turn and do you harm and consume you, after having done you good.” 21 And the people said to Joshua, “No, but we will serve the Lord.” 22 Then Joshua said to the people, “You are witnesses against yourselves that you have chosen the Lord, to serve him.” And they said, “We are witnesses.” 23 He said, “Then put away the foreign gods that are among you, and incline your heart to the Lord, the God of Israel.” 24 And the people said to Joshua, “The Lord our God we will serve, and his voice we will obey.” 25 So Joshua made a covenant with the people that day, and put in place statutes and rules for them at Shechem. 26 And Joshua wrote these words in the Book of the Law of God. And he took a large stone and set it up there under the terebinth that was by the sanctuary of the Lord. 27 And Joshua said to all the people, “Behold, this stone shall be a witness against us, for it has heard all the words of the Lord that he spoke to us. Therefore it shall be a witness against you, lest you deal falsely with your God.” 28 So Joshua sent the people away, every man to his inheritance.

Joshua’s Death and Burial

29 After these things Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of the Lord, died, being 110 years old. 30 And they buried him in his own inheritance at Timnath-serah, which is in the hill country of Ephraim, north of the mountain of Gaash. 31 Israel served the Lord all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders who outlived Joshua and had known all the work that the Lord did for Israel. 32 As for the bones of Joseph, which the people of Israel brought up from Egypt, they buried them at Shechem, in the piece of land that Jacob bought from the sons of Hamor the father of Shechem for a hundred pieces of money.* It became an inheritance of the descendants of Joseph. 33 And Eleazar the son of Aaron died, and they buried him at Gibeah, the town of Phinehas his son, which had been given him in the hill country of Ephraim.
