1Hijo mío, si has salido fiador de tu vecino, si has hecho tratos para responder por otro,2si verbalmente te has comprometido, enredándote con tus propias palabras,3entonces has caído en manos de tu prójimo. Si quieres librarte, hijo mío, éste es el camino: Ve corriendo y humíllate ante él; procura deshacer tu compromiso.4No permitas que se duerman tus ojos; no dejes que tus párpados se cierren.5Líbrate, como se libra del cazador* la gacela, como se libra de la trampa* el ave.6¡Anda, perezoso, fíjate en la hormiga! ¡Fíjate en lo que hace, y adquiere sabiduría!7No tiene quien la mande, ni quien la vigile ni gobierne;8con todo, en el verano almacena provisiones y durante la cosecha recoge alimentos.9Perezoso, ¿cuánto tiempo más seguirás acostado? ¿Cuándo despertarás de tu sueño?10Un corto sueño, una breve siesta, un pequeño descanso, cruzado de brazos...11¡y te asaltará la pobreza como un bandido, y la escasez como un hombre armado!*12El bribón y sinvergüenza, el vagabundo de boca corrupta,13hace guiños con los ojos, y señas con los pies y con los dedos.14El malvado trama el mal en su mente, y siempre anda provocando disensiones.15Por eso le sobrevendrá la ruina; ¡de repente será destruido, y no podrá evitarlo!16Hay seis cosas que el Señor aborrece, y siete que le son detestables:17los ojos que se enaltecen, la lengua que miente, las manos que derraman sangre inocente,18el corazón que hace planes perversos, los pies que corren a hacer lo malo,19el falso testigo que esparce mentiras, y el que siembra discordia entre hermanos.
Advertencia contra el adulterio
20Hijo mío, obedece el mandamiento de tu padre y no abandones la enseñanza de tu madre.21Grábatelos en el corazón; cuélgatelos al cuello.22Cuando camines, te servirán de guía; cuando duermas, vigilarán tu sueño; cuando despiertes, hablarán contigo.23El mandamiento es una lámpara, la enseñanza es una luz y la disciplina es el camino a la vida.24Te protegerán de la mujer malvada, de la mujer ajena y de su lengua seductora.25No abrigues en tu corazón deseos por su belleza, ni te dejes cautivar por sus ojos,26pues la ramera va tras un pedazo de pan, pero la adúltera va tras el hombre que vale.*27¿Puede alguien echarse brasas en el pecho sin quemarse la ropa?28¿Puede alguien caminar sobre las brasas sin quemarse los pies?29Pues tampoco quien se acuesta con la mujer ajena puede tocarla y quedar impune.30No se desprecia al ladrón que roba para mitigar su hambre;31pero si lo atrapan, deberá devolver siete tantos lo robado, aun cuando eso le cueste todas sus posesiones.32Pero al que comete adulterio le faltan sesos; el que así actúa se destruye a sí mismo.33No sacará más que golpes y vergüenzas, y no podrá borrar su oprobio.34Porque los celos desatan la furia del esposo, y éste no perdonará en el día de la venganza.35No aceptará nada en desagravio, ni se contentará con muchos regalos.

Warnings against folly
1My son, if you have put up security for your neighbour, if you have shaken hands in pledge for a stranger,2you have been trapped by what you said, ensnared by the words of your mouth.3So do this, my son, to free yourself, since you have fallen into your neighbour’s hands: go – to the point of exhaustion –* and give your neighbour no rest!4Allow no sleep to your eyes, no slumber to your eyelids.5Free yourself, like a gazelle from the hand of the hunter, like a bird from the snare of the fowler.6Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise!7It has no commander, no overseer or ruler,8yet it stores its provisions in summer and gathers its food at harvest.9How long will you lie there, you sluggard? When will you get up from your sleep?10A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest –11and poverty will come on you like a thief and scarcity like an armed man.12A troublemaker and a villain, who goes about with a corrupt mouth,13who winks maliciously with his eye, signals with his feet and motions with his fingers,14who plots evil with deceit in his heart – he always stirs up conflict.15Therefore disaster will overtake him in an instant; he will suddenly be destroyed – without remedy.16There are six things the Lord hates, seven that are detestable to him:17haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood,18a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil,19a false witness who pours out lies and a person who stirs up conflict in the community.
Warning against adultery
20My son, keep your father’s command and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.21Bind them always on your heart; fasten them round your neck.22When you walk, they will guide you; when you sleep, they will watch over you; when you awake, they will speak to you.23For this command is a lamp, this teaching is a light, and correction and instruction are the way to life,24keeping you from your neighbour’s wife, from the smooth talk of a wayward woman.25Do not lust in your heart after her beauty or let her captivate you with her eyes.26For a prostitute can be had for a loaf of bread, but another man’s wife preys on your very life.27Can a man scoop fire into his lap without his clothes being burned?28Can a man walk on hot coals without his feet being scorched?29So is he who sleeps with another man’s wife; no-one who touches her will go unpunished.30People do not despise a thief if he steals to satisfy his hunger when he is starving.31Yet if he is caught, he must pay sevenfold, though it costs him all the wealth of his house.32But a man who commits adultery has no sense; whoever does so destroys himself.33Blows and disgrace are his lot, and his shame will never be wiped away.34For jealousy arouses a husband’s fury, and he will show no mercy when he takes revenge.35He will not accept any compensation; he will refuse a bribe, however great it is.
