1 Oh, squarciassi tu i cieli e scendessi! Davanti a te sarebbero scossi i monti. 2 Come il fuoco accende i rami secchi, come il fuoco fa bollire l’acqua, tu faresti conoscere il tuo nome ai tuoi avversari e le nazioni tremerebbero davanti a te. 3 Quando facesti le cose tremende che noi non ci aspettavamo, tu discendesti e i monti furono scossi davanti a te. 4 Mai si era udito, mai orecchio aveva sentito dire, mai occhio aveva visto che un altro dio, all’infuori di te, agisse in favore di chi spera in lui. 5 Tu vai incontro a chi gode nel praticare la giustizia, a chi, camminando nelle tue vie, si ricorda di te; ecco, tu ti sei adirato perché abbiamo peccato nel tempo passato, ma noi saremo salvati. 6 Tutti quanti siamo diventati come l’uomo impuro, tutta la nostra giustizia come un abito sporco; tutti quanti appassiamo come foglie e la nostra iniquità ci porta via come il vento. 7 Non c’è più nessuno che invochi il tuo nome, che si risvegli per attenersi a te; poiché tu ci hai nascosto la tua faccia e ci lasci consumare dalle nostre iniquità. 8 Tuttavia, Signore, tu sei nostro padre; noi siamo l’argilla e tu colui che ci formi; noi siamo tutti opera delle tue mani. 9 Non adirarti fino all’estremo, o Signore! Non ricordarti dell’iniquità per sempre; ecco, guarda, ti supplichiamo, noi siamo tutti tuo popolo. 10 Le tue città sante sono un deserto; Sion è un deserto, Gerusalemme è una desolazione. 11 La nostra santa e magnifica casa, dove i nostri padri ti celebrarono, è diventata preda delle fiamme, quanto avevamo di più caro è stato devastato. 12 Davanti a queste cose te ne rimarrai impassibile, o Signore? Tacerai e ci affliggerai fino all’estremo?

1 Oh that you would rend the heavens and come down, that the mountains might quake at your presence— 2 * as when fire kindles brushwood and the fire causes water to boil— to make your name known to your adversaries, and that the nations might tremble at your presence! 3 When you did awesome things that we did not look for, you came down, the mountains quaked at your presence. 4 From of old no one has heard or perceived by the ear, no eye has seen a God besides you, who acts for those who wait for him. 5 You meet him who joyfully works righteousness, those who remember you in your ways. Behold, you were angry, and we sinned; in our sins we have been a long time, and shall we be saved?* 6 We have all become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous deeds are like a polluted garment. We all fade like a leaf, and our iniquities, like the wind, take us away. 7 There is no one who calls upon your name, who rouses himself to take hold of you; for you have hidden your face from us, and have made us melt in* the hand of our iniquities. 8 But now, O Lord, you are our Father; we are the clay, and you are our potter; we are all the work of your hand. 9 Be not so terribly angry, O Lord, and remember not iniquity forever. Behold, please look, we are all your people. 10 Your holy cities have become a wilderness; Zion has become a wilderness, Jerusalem a desolation. 11 Our holy and beautiful* house, where our fathers praised you, has been burned by fire, and all our pleasant places have become ruins. 12 Will you restrain yourself at these things, O Lord? Will you keep silent, and afflict us so terribly?
