Profezia della conquista di Gerusalemme per mano di Nabucodonosor

1 Ecco la parola che fu rivolta a Geremia da parte del Signore, quando il re Sedechia gli mandò Pascur, figlio di Malchia, e Sefania, figlio di Maaseia, il sacerdote, per dirgli: 2 «Ti prego, consulta per noi il Signore, poiché Nabucodonosor, re di Babilonia, ci fa la guerra; forse il Signore farà in nostro favore qualcuna delle sue meraviglie, in modo che si ritiri da noi». 3 Allora Geremia disse loro: «Direte così a Sedechia: 4 “Così parla il Signore, Dio d’Israele: ‘Ecco, io sto per far rientrare nella città le armi di guerra che sono nelle vostre mani e con le quali voi combattete, fuori delle mura, contro il re di Babilonia e contro i Caldei che vi assediano, e le raccoglierò in mezzo a questa città. 5 Io stesso combatterò contro di voi con mano distesa e con braccio potente, con ira, con furore, con grande indignazione. 6 Colpirò gli abitanti di questa città, uomini e bestie, e moriranno di un’orrenda peste. 7 Poi’, dice il Signore, ‘io darò Sedechia, re di Giuda, e i suoi servitori, e il popolo, e coloro che in questa città saranno scampati alla peste, alla spada e alla fame, in mano a Nabucodonosor, re di Babilonia, in mano ai loro nemici, in mano a quelli che cercano la loro vita. Nabucodonosor li passerà a fil di spada; non li risparmierà e non avrà né pietà né compassione’”. 8 A questo popolo dirai: “Così parla il Signore: ‘Ecco, io pongo davanti a voi la via della vita e la via della morte. 9 Colui che rimarrà in questa città morirà di spada, di fame o di peste; ma chi ne uscirà per arrendersi ai Caldei che vi assediano vivrà, e avrà la vita come suo bottino. 10 Io infatti volgo la mia faccia contro questa città per farle del male e non del bene’, dice il Signore; ‘essa sarà data in mano al re di Babilonia, ed egli la darà alle fiamme’”. 11 Alla casa dei re di Giuda di’: “Ascoltate la parola del Signore! 12 Casa di Davide, così dice il Signore: Amministrate la giustizia fin dal mattino, liberate dalla mano dell’oppressore colui al quale è tolto il suo, affinché l’ira mia non divampi come fuoco e arda al punto che nessuno la possa spegnere, per la malvagità delle vostre azioni. 13 Eccomi contro di te, o abitatrice della valle, roccia della pianura”, dice il Signore. “Voi dite: ‘Chi scenderà contro di noi? Chi potrà entrare nelle nostre abitazioni?’ 14 Io vi punirò secondo il frutto delle vostre azioni”, dice il Signore; “appiccherò il fuoco a questa selva di Gerusalemme ed esso divorerà tutto quello che la circonda”».

Jerusalem Will Fall to Nebuchadnezzar

1 This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord, when King Zedekiah sent to him Pashhur the son of Malchiah and Zephaniah the priest, the son of Maaseiah, saying, 2 “Inquire of the Lord for us, for Nebuchadnezzar* king of Babylon is making war against us. Perhaps the Lord will deal with us according to all his wonderful deeds and will make him withdraw from us.” 3 Then Jeremiah said to them: “Thus you shall say to Zedekiah, 4 ‘Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: Behold, I will turn back the weapons of war that are in your hands and with which you are fighting against the king of Babylon and against the Chaldeans who are besieging you outside the walls. And I will bring them together into the midst of this city. 5 I myself will fight against you with outstretched hand and strong arm, in anger and in fury and in great wrath. 6 And I will strike down the inhabitants of this city, both man and beast. They shall die of a great pestilence. 7 Afterward, declares the Lord, I will give Zedekiah king of Judah and his servants and the people in this city who survive the pestilence, sword, and famine into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and into the hand of their enemies, into the hand of those who seek their lives. He shall strike them down with the edge of the sword. He shall not pity them or spare them or have compassion.’ 8 “And to this people you shall say: ‘Thus says the Lord: Behold, I set before you the way of life and the way of death. 9 He who stays in this city shall die by the sword, by famine, and by pestilence, but he who goes out and surrenders to the Chaldeans who are besieging you shall live and shall have his life as a prize of war. 10 For I have set my face against this city for harm and not for good, declares the Lord: it shall be given into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall burn it with fire.’

Message to the House of David

11 “And to the house of the king of Judah say, ‘Hear the word of the Lord, 12 O house of David! Thus says the Lord: “Execute justice in the morning, and deliver from the hand of the oppressor him who has been robbed, lest my wrath go forth like fire, and burn with none to quench it, because of your evil deeds.’” 13 “Behold, I am against you, O inhabitant of the valley, O rock of the plain, declares the Lord; you who say, ‘Who shall come down against us, or who shall enter our habitations?’ 14 I will punish you according to the fruit of your deeds, declares the Lord; I will kindle a fire in her forest, and it shall devour all that is around her.”
