Joshua’s farewell to the leaders

1 After a long time had passed and the Lord had given Israel rest from all their enemies around them, Joshua, by then a very old man, 2 summoned all Israel – their elders, leaders, judges and officials – and said to them: ‘I am very old. 3 You yourselves have seen everything the Lord your God has done to all these nations for your sake; it was the Lord your God who fought for you. 4 Remember how I have allotted as an inheritance for your tribes all the land of the nations that remain – the nations I conquered – between the Jordan and the Mediterranean Sea in the west. 5 The Lord your God himself will push them out for your sake. He will drive them out before you, and you will take possession of their land, as the Lord your God promised you. 6 ‘Be very strong; be careful to obey all that is written in the Book of the Law of Moses, without turning aside to the right or to the left. 7 Do not associate with these nations that remain among you; do not invoke the names of their gods or swear by them. You must not serve them or bow down to them. 8 But you are to hold fast to the Lord your God, as you have until now. 9 ‘The Lord has driven out before you great and powerful nations; to this day no-one has been able to withstand you. 10 One of you routs a thousand, because the Lord your God fights for you, just as he promised. 11 So be very careful to love the Lord your God. 12 ‘But if you turn away and ally yourselves with the survivors of these nations that remain among you and if you intermarry with them and associate with them, 13 then you may be sure that the Lord your God will no longer drive out these nations before you. Instead, they will become snares and traps for you, whips on your backs and thorns in your eyes, until you perish from this good land, which the Lord your God has given you. 14 ‘Now I am about to go the way of all the earth. You know with all your heart and soul that not one of all the good promises the Lord your God gave you has failed. Every promise has been fulfilled; not one has failed. 15 But just as all the good things the Lord your God has promised you have come to you, so he will bring on you all the evil things he has threatened, until the Lord your God has destroyed you from this good land he has given you. 16 If you violate the covenant of the Lord your God, which he commanded you, and go and serve other gods and bow down to them, the Lord’s anger will burn against you, and you will quickly perish from the good land he has given you.’

Esortazioni di Giosuè ai capi d’Israele

1 Molto tempo dopo che il Signore ebbe dato riposo a Israele liberandolo da tutti i nemici che lo circondavano, Giosuè, ormai vecchio e molto avanti negli anni, 2 convocò tutto Israele, gli anziani, i capi, i giudici e gli ufficiali del popolo, e disse loro: «Io sono vecchio e molto avanti negli anni. 3 Voi avete visto tutto quel che il Signore, il vostro Dio, ha fatto a tutte queste nazioni davanti a voi; poiché il Signore, il vostro Dio, è colui che ha combattuto per voi. 4 Ecco, io ho diviso tra voi a sorte, come eredità, secondo le vostre tribù, il paese delle nazioni che restano, e di tutte quelle che ho sterminate, dal Giordano fino al mar Grande, a occidente. 5 E il Signore vostro Dio le disperderà egli stesso davanti a voi e le scaccerà davanti a voi e voi prenderete possesso del loro paese, come il Signore, il vostro Dio, vi ha detto. 6 Applicatevi dunque risolutamente a osservare e a mettere in pratica tutto quel che è scritto nel libro della legge di Mosè, senza sviarvene né a destra né a sinistra, 7 senza mischiarvi con queste nazioni che rimangono tra voi; non pronunciate neppure il nome dei loro dèi, non ne fate uso nei giuramenti; non li servite e non vi prostrate davanti a loro; 8 ma tenetevi stretti al Signore, che è il vostro Dio, come avete fatto fino a oggi. 9 Il Signore ha scacciato davanti a voi nazioni grandi e potenti; e nessuno ha potuto opporsi a voi, fino a oggi. 10 Uno solo di voi ne inseguiva mille, perché il Signore, il vostro Dio, combatteva per voi, com’egli vi aveva detto. 11 Vegliate dunque attentamente su voi stessi, per amare il Signore, il vostro Dio. 12 Perché, se voltate le spalle a lui e vi unite a quel che resta di queste nazioni che sono rimaste fra voi e vi imparentate con loro e vi mescolate con loro ed esse con voi, 13 siate ben certi che il Signore, il vostro Dio, non continuerà a scacciare questi popoli davanti a voi, ma essi diventeranno per voi una rete, un’insidia, un flagello ai vostri fianchi, tante spine nei vostri occhi, finché non siate periti e scomparsi da questo buon paese che il Signore, il vostro Dio, vi ha dato. 14 Ora, ecco, io me ne vado oggi per la via di tutti gli abitanti della terra; riconoscete dunque con tutto il vostro cuore e con tutta l’anima vostra che neppure una di tutte le buone parole che il Signore, il vostro Dio, ha pronunciate su di voi è caduta a terra; tutte si sono compiute per voi: neppure una è caduta a terra. 15 Ma come ogni buona parola che il Signore, il vostro Dio, vi aveva detta si è compiuta per voi, così il Signore adempirà a vostro danno tutte le sue parole di minaccia, finché vi abbia sterminati da questo buon paese che il vostro Dio, il Signore, vi ha dato. 16 Se trasgredite il patto che il Signore, il vostro Dio, vi ha imposto, e andate a servire altri dèi e vi prostrate davanti a loro, l’ira del Signore si accenderà contro di voi, e voi perirete presto, scomparendo dal buon paese che egli vi ha dato».
