1 In the ninth year of Zedekiah king of Judah, in the tenth month, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon marched against Jerusalem with his whole army and laid siege to it. 2 And on the ninth day of the fourth month of Zedekiah’s eleventh year, the city wall was broken through. 3 Then all the officials of the king of Babylon came and took seats in the Middle Gate: Nergal-Sharezer of Samgar, Nebo-Sarsekim a chief officer, Nergal-Sharezer a high official and all the other officials of the king of Babylon. 4 When Zedekiah king of Judah and all the soldiers saw them, they fled; they left the city at night by way of the king’s garden, through the gate between the two walls, and headed towards the Arabah.* 5 But the Babylonian* army pursued them and overtook Zedekiah in the plains of Jericho. They captured him and took him to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon at Riblah in the land of Hamath, where he pronounced sentence on him. 6 There at Riblah the king of Babylon slaughtered the sons of Zedekiah before his eyes and also killed all the nobles of Judah. 7 Then he put out Zedekiah’s eyes and bound him with bronze shackles to take him to Babylon. 8 The Babylonians* set fire to the royal palace and the houses of the people and broke down the walls of Jerusalem. 9 Nebuzaradan commander of the imperial guard carried into exile to Babylon the people who remained in the city, along with those who had gone over to him, and the rest of the people. 10 But Nebuzaradan the commander of the guard left behind in the land of Judah some of the poor people, who owned nothing; and at that time he gave them vineyards and fields. 11 Now Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon had given these orders about Jeremiah through Nebuzaradan commander of the imperial guard: 12 ‘Take him and look after him; don’t harm him but do for him whatever he asks.’ 13 So Nebuzaradan the commander of the guard, Nebushazban a chief officer, Nergal-Sharezer a high official and all the other officers of the king of Babylon 14 sent and had Jeremiah taken out of the courtyard of the guard. They handed him over to Gedaliah son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, to take him back to his home. So he remained among his own people. 15 While Jeremiah had been confined in the courtyard of the guard, the word of the Lord came to him: 16 ‘Go and tell Ebed-Melek the Cushite, “This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: I am about to fulfil my words against this city – words concerning disaster, not prosperity. At that time they will be fulfilled before your eyes. 17 But I will rescue you on that day, declares the Lord; you will not be given into the hands of those you fear. 18 I will save you; you will not fall by the sword but will escape with your life, because you trust in me, declares the Lord.” ’

Presa di Gerusalemme; Sedechia deportato a Babilonia

1 Quando Gerusalemme fu presa, il nono anno di Sedechia, re di Giuda, il decimo mese, Nabucodonosor re di Babilonia venne con tutto il suo esercito contro Gerusalemme e la cinse d’assedio. 2 L’undicesimo anno di Sedechia, il quarto mese, il nono giorno, una breccia fu fatta nella città; 3 tutti i capi del re di Babilonia entrarono e si stabilirono alla porta di mezzo: Nergal-Sareser, Samgar-Nebu, Sarsechim, capo degli eunuchi, Nergal-Sareser, capo dei magi*, e tutti gli altri capi del re di Babilonia. 4 Quando Sedechia, re di Giuda, e tutta la gente di guerra li videro, fuggirono, uscirono di notte dalla città, per la via del giardino reale, per la porta fra le due mura, e presero la via della pianura. 5 Ma l’esercito dei Caldei li inseguì e raggiunse Sedechia nelle campagne di Gerico. Lo catturarono, lo condussero su da Nabucodonosor, re di Babilonia, a Ribla, nel paese di Camat, dove il re pronunciò la sua sentenza su di lui. 6 Il re di Babilonia fece scannare i figli di Sedechia a Ribla, sotto i suoi occhi; il re di Babilonia fece pure scannare tutti i notabili di Giuda; 7 poi fece cavare gli occhi a Sedechia e lo fece legare con una doppia catena di bronzo per deportarlo a Babilonia. 8 I Caldei incendiarono il palazzo del re e le case del popolo e abbatterono le mura di Gerusalemme; 9 Nebuzaradan, capo delle guardie, deportò a Babilonia il residuo della gente che era ancora nella città, quelli che erano andati ad arrendersi a lui e il resto del popolo. 10 Ma Nebuzaradan, capo delle guardie, lasciò nel paese di Giuda alcuni dei più poveri fra il popolo, i quali non avevano nulla, e diede loro in quel giorno vigne e campi.

Geremia liberato dalla prigione

11 Nabucodonosor, re di Babilonia, aveva dato a Nebuzaradan, capo delle guardie, quest’ordine riguardo a Geremia: 12 «Prendilo, veglia su di lui e non fargli del male, ma compòrtati verso di lui come egli ti dirà». 13 Così Nebuzaradan, capo delle guardie, Nebusazban, capo degli eunuchi, Nergal-Sareser, capo dei magi, e tutti i capi del re di Babilonia 14 mandarono a prendere Geremia e lo fecero uscire dal cortile della prigione; lo consegnarono a Ghedalia, figlio di Aicam, figlio di Safan, perché fosse condotto a casa; così egli abitò fra il popolo. 15 La parola del Signore fu rivolta a Geremia in questi termini, mentre egli era rinchiuso nel cortile della prigione: 16 «Va’ e parla a Ebed-Melec, l’Etiope, e digli: “Così parla il Signore degli eserciti, Dio d’Israele: ‘Ecco, io sto per adempiere su questa città, per il suo male e non per il suo bene, le parole che ho pronunciate, e in quel giorno esse si avvereranno in tua presenza. 17 Ma in quel giorno io ti libererò’, dice il Signore; ‘tu non sarai dato in mano agli uomini che temi; 18 poiché, certo, io ti farò scampare e tu non cadrai per la spada. La tua vita sarà il tuo bottino, poiché hai posto la tua fiducia in me’”, dice il Signore».
