Two baskets of figs

1 After Jehoiachin* son of Jehoiakim king of Judah and the officials, the skilled workers and the craftsmen of Judah were carried into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon by Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, the Lord showed me two baskets of figs placed in front of the temple of the Lord. 2 One basket had very good figs, like those that ripen early; the other basket had very bad figs, so bad that they could not be eaten. 3 Then the Lord asked me, ‘What do you see, Jeremiah?’ ‘Figs,’ I answered. ‘The good ones are very good, but the bad ones are so bad that they cannot be eaten.’ 4 Then the word of the Lord came to me: 5 ‘This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: “Like these good figs, I regard as good the exiles from Judah, whom I sent away from this place to the land of the Babylonians.* 6 My eyes will watch over them for their good, and I will bring them back to this land. I will build them up and not tear them down; I will plant them and not uproot them. 7 I will give them a heart to know me, that I am the Lord. They will be my people, and I will be their God, for they will return to me with all their heart. 8 ‘ “But like the bad figs, which are so bad that they cannot be eaten,” says the Lord, “so will I deal with Zedekiah king of Judah, his officials and the survivors from Jerusalem, whether they remain in this land or live in Egypt. 9 I will make them abhorrent and an offence to all the kingdoms of the earth, a reproach and a byword, a curse* and an object of ridicule, wherever I banish them. 10 I will send the sword, famine and plague against them until they are destroyed from the land I gave to them and their ancestors.” ’

1 Il Signore mi fece vedere due canestri di fichi, posti davanti al tempio del Signore, dopo che Nabucodonosor, re di Babilonia, ebbe deportato da Gerusalemme a Babilonia Ieconia, figlio di Ioiachim, re di Giuda, i capi di Giuda, i falegnami e i fabbri. 2 Uno dei canestri conteneva dei fichi molto buoni, come sono i fichi primaticci, e l’altro canestro conteneva dei fichi molto cattivi, che non si potevano mangiare, tanto erano cattivi. 3 Il Signore mi disse: «Che vedi, Geremia?» Io risposi: «Dei fichi; quelli buoni, molto buoni, e quelli cattivi, molto cattivi, da non potersi mangiare, tanto sono cattivi». 4 La parola del Signore mi fu rivolta in questi termini: 5 «Così parla il Signore, Dio d’Israele: “Quali sono questi fichi buoni, tali saranno quelli di Giuda che ho mandati da questo luogo in esilio nel paese dei Caldei. Io li tratterò con riguardo, 6 metterò il mio occhio su di loro per il bene, li ricondurrò in questo paese, li stabilirò fermamente e non li distruggerò; li pianterò e non li sradicherò. 7 Darò loro un cuore per conoscere me, che sono il Signore; saranno mio popolo e io sarò loro Dio, perché si convertiranno a me con tutto il loro cuore. 8 Come invece si trattano i fichi cattivi, che non si possono mangiare, tanto sono cattivi, così”, dice il Signore, “io tratterò Sedechia, re di Giuda, e i suoi prìncipi e il residuo di quelli di Gerusalemme, quelli che sono rimasti in questo paese e quelli che abitano nel paese d’Egitto. 9 Farò in modo che siano agitati e maltrattati per tutti i regni della terra; diventeranno oggetto d’obbrobrio, di proverbio, di sarcasmo e di maledizione in tutti i luoghi dove li caccerò. 10 Manderò contro di loro la spada, la fame, la peste, finché siano scomparsi dal suolo che avevo dato a loro e ai loro padri”».
