1‘Sing, barren woman, you who never bore a child; burst into song, shout for joy, you who were never in labour; because more are the children of the desolate woman than of her who has a husband,’ says the Lord.2‘Enlarge the place of your tent, stretch your tent curtains wide, do not hold back; lengthen your cords, strengthen your stakes.3For you will spread out to the right and to the left; your descendants will dispossess nations and settle in their desolate cities.4‘Do not be afraid; you will not be put to shame. Do not fear disgrace; you will not be humiliated. You will forget the shame of your youth and remember no more the reproach of your widowhood.5For your Maker is your husband – the Lord Almighty is his name – the Holy One of Israel is your Redeemer; he is called the God of all the earth.6The Lord will call you back as if you were a wife deserted and distressed in spirit – a wife who married young, only to be rejected,’ says your God.7‘For a brief moment I abandoned you, but with deep compassion I will bring you back.8In a surge of anger I hid my face from you for a moment, but with everlasting kindness I will have compassion on you,’ says the Lord your Redeemer.9‘To me this is like the days of Noah, when I swore that the waters of Noah would never again cover the earth. So now I have sworn not to be angry with you, never to rebuke you again.10Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken nor my covenant of peace be removed,’ says the Lord, who has compassion on you.11‘Afflicted city, lashed by storms and not comforted, I will rebuild you with stones of turquoise,* your foundations with lapis lazuli.12I will make your battlements of rubies, your gates of sparkling jewels, and all your walls of precious stones.13All your children will be taught by the Lord, and great will be their peace.14In righteousness you will be established: tyranny will be far from you; you will have nothing to fear. Terror will be far removed; it will not come near you.15If anyone does attack you, it will not be my doing; whoever attacks you will surrender to you.16‘See, it is I who created the blacksmith who fans the coals into flame and forges a weapon fit for its work. And it is I who have created the destroyer to wreak havoc;17no weapon forged against you will prevail, and you will refute every tongue that accuses you. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, and this is their vindication from me,’ declares the Lord.

1«Esulta, o sterile, tu che non partorivi! Da’ in grida di gioia e rallègrati, tu che non provavi doglie di parto! Poiché i figli dell’abbandonata saranno più numerosi dei figli di colei che ha marito», dice il Signore.2«Allarga il luogo della tua tenda, si spieghino i teli della tua abitazione, senza risparmio; allunga i tuoi cordami, rafforza i tuoi picchetti!3Poiché ti spanderai a destra e a sinistra; la tua discendenza possederà le nazioni e popolerà le città deserte.4Non temere, perché tu non sarai più confusa; non avere vergogna, perché non dovrai più arrossire; ma dimenticherai la vergogna della tua giovinezza, non ricorderai più l’infamia della tua vedovanza.5Poiché il tuo Creatore è il tuo sposo; il suo nome è: il Signore degli eserciti. Il tuo Redentore è il Santo d’Israele, che sarà chiamato Dio di tutta la terra.6Poiché il Signore ti richiama come una donna abbandonata, il cui spirito è afflitto, come la sposa della giovinezza, che è stata ripudiata», dice il tuo Dio.7«Per un breve istante io ti ho abbandonata, ma con immensa compassione io ti raccoglierò.8In un eccesso d’ira ti ho per un momento nascosto la mia faccia, ma con un amore eterno io avrò pietà di te», dice il Signore, il tuo Redentore.9«Avverrà per me come delle acque di Noè; poiché, come giurai che le acque di Noè non si sarebbero più sparse sopra la terra, così io giuro di non irritarmi più contro di te, di non minacciarti più.10Anche se i monti si allontanassero e i colli fossero rimossi, l’amore mio non si allontanerà da te, né il mio patto di pace sarà rimosso», dice il Signore, che ha pietà di te.11«O afflitta, sbattuta dalla tempesta, sconsolata, ecco, io incasserò le tue pietre nell’antimonio e ti fonderò sopra zaffiri.12Farò i tuoi merli di rubini, le tue porte di carbonchi, e tutto il tuo recinto di pietre preziose.13Tutti i tuoi figli saranno discepoli del Signore e grande sarà la pace dei tuoi figli.14Tu sarai stabilita fermamente mediante la giustizia; sarai lontana dall’oppressione, perché non avrai niente da temere, e dalla rovina, perché non si accosterà a te.15Ecco, potranno fare alleanze, ma senza di me. Chiunque farà alleanza contro di te, cadrà davanti a te.16Ecco, io ho creato il fabbro; egli soffia nel fuoco sui carboni e forgia uno strumento per il suo lavoro; io pure ho creato il devastatore per distruggere.17Nessun’arma fabbricata contro di te riuscirà; ogni lingua che sorgerà in giudizio contro di te, tu la condannerai. Questa è l’eredità dei servi del Signore, la giusta ricompensa che verrà loro da me», dice il Signore.
