Woe to the obstinate nation

1 ‘Woe to the obstinate children,’ declares the Lord, ‘to those who carry out plans that are not mine, forming an alliance, but not by my Spirit, heaping sin upon sin; 2 who go down to Egypt without consulting me; who look for help to Pharaoh’s protection, to Egypt’s shade for refuge. 3 But Pharaoh’s protection will be to your shame, Egypt’s shade will bring you disgrace. 4 Though they have officials in Zoan and their envoys have arrived in Hanes, 5 everyone will be put to shame because of a people useless to them, who bring neither help nor advantage, but only shame and disgrace.’ 6 A prophecy concerning the animals of the Negev: Through a land of hardship and distress, of lions and lionesses, of adders and darting snakes, the envoys carry their riches on donkeys’ backs, their treasures on the humps of camels, to that unprofitable nation, 7 to Egypt, whose help is utterly useless. Therefore I call her Rahab the Do-Nothing. 8 Go now, write it on a tablet for them, inscribe it on a scroll, that for the days to come it may be an everlasting witness. 9 For these are rebellious people, deceitful children, children unwilling to listen to the Lord’s instruction. 10 They say to the seers, ‘See no more visions!’ and to the prophets, ‘Give us no more visions of what is right! Tell us pleasant things, prophesy illusions. 11 Leave this way, get off this path, and stop confronting us with the Holy One of Israel!’ 12 Therefore this is what the Holy One of Israel says: ‘Because you have rejected this message, relied on oppression and depended on deceit, 13 this sin will become for you like a high wall, cracked and bulging, that collapses suddenly, in an instant. 14 It will break in pieces like pottery, shattered so mercilessly that among its pieces not a fragment will be found for taking coals from a hearth or scooping water out of a cistern.’ 15 This is what the Sovereign Lord, the Holy One of Israel, says: ‘In repentance and rest is your salvation, in quietness and trust is your strength, but you would have none of it. 16 You said, “No, we will flee on horses.” Therefore you will flee! You said, “We will ride off on swift horses.” Therefore your pursuers will be swift! 17 A thousand will flee at the threat of one; at the threat of five you will all flee away, till you are left like a flagstaff on a mountaintop, like a banner on a hill.’ 18 Yet the Lord longs to be gracious to you; therefore he will rise up to show you compassion. For the Lord is a God of justice. Blessed are all who wait for him! 19 People of Zion, who live in Jerusalem, you will weep no more. How gracious he will be when you cry for help! As soon as he hears, he will answer you. 20 Although the Lord gives you the bread of adversity and the water of affliction, your teachers will be hidden no more; with your own eyes you will see them. 21 Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, ‘This is the way; walk in it.’ 22 Then you will desecrate your idols overlaid with silver and your images covered with gold; you will throw them away like a menstrual cloth and say to them, ‘Away with you!’ 23 He will also send you rain for the seed you sow in the ground, and the food that comes from the land will be rich and plentiful. In that day your cattle will graze in broad meadows. 24 The oxen and donkeys that work the soil will eat fodder and mash, spread out with fork and shovel. 25 In the day of great slaughter, when the towers fall, streams of water will flow on every high mountain and every lofty hill. 26 The moon will shine like the sun, and the sunlight will be seven times brighter, like the light of seven full days, when the Lord binds up the bruises of his people and heals the wounds he inflicted. 27 See, the Name of the Lord comes from afar, with burning anger and dense clouds of smoke; his lips are full of wrath, and his tongue is a consuming fire. 28 His breath is like a rushing torrent, rising up to the neck. He shakes the nations in the sieve of destruction; he places in the jaws of the peoples a bit that leads them astray. 29 And you will sing as on the night you celebrate a holy festival; your hearts will rejoice as when people playing pipes go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the Rock of Israel. 30 The Lord will cause people to hear his majestic voice and will make them see his arm coming down with raging anger and consuming fire, with cloudburst, thunderstorm and hail. 31 The voice of the Lord will shatter Assyria; with his rod he will strike them down. 32 Every stroke the Lord lays on them with his punishing club will be to the music of tambourines and harps, as he fights them in battle with the blows of his arm. 33 Topheth has long been prepared; it has been made ready for the king. Its fire pit has been made deep and wide, with an abundance of fire and wood; the breath of the Lord, like a stream of burning sulphur, sets it ablaze.

1 Guai, dice il Signore, ai figli ribelli che formano dei disegni, ma senza di me, che contraggono alleanze, ma senza il mio Spirito, per accumulare peccato su peccato; 2 che vanno giù in Egitto senza aver consultato la mia bocca, per rifugiarsi sotto la protezione del faraone e cercare riparo all’ombra dell’Egitto! 3 La protezione del faraone vi tornerà a confusione e il riparo all’ombra dell’Egitto a vergogna. 4 I prìncipi di Giuda sono già a Soan e i suoi ambasciatori sono già arrivati a Canes; 5 ma tutti saranno delusi di un popolo che a nulla giova loro, che non reca aiuto né giovamento alcuno, ma è la loro infamia e la loro vergogna. 6 È pronto il carico delle bestie per la regione meridionale; attraverso un paese di pericoli e angoscia, da cui vengono la leonessa e il leone, la vipera e il drago volante; essi portano le loro ricchezze sul dorso degli asinelli e i loro tesori sulla gobba dei cammelli a un popolo che non gioverà loro nulla. 7 Poiché il soccorso dell’Egitto è un soffio, una vanità; per questo io chiamo quel paese: «Gran rumore per nulla». 8 Ora vieni e traccia queste cose in loro presenza sopra una tavola, e scrivile in un libro, perché rimangano per i giorni futuri, per sempre. 9 Poiché questo è un popolo ribelle, sono figli bugiardi, figli che non vogliono ascoltare la legge del Signore, 10 che dicono ai veggenti: «Non vedete!» e a quelli che hanno visioni: «Non ci annunciate visioni di cose vere! Diteci cose piacevoli, vedete cose immaginarie! 11 Uscite fuori di strada, abbandonate il sentiero retto, allontanateci dagli occhi il Santo d’Israele!» 12 Perciò così dice il Santo d’Israele: «Poiché voi disprezzate questa parola e confidate nell’oppressione e nelle vie oblique, e ne fate il vostro appoggio, 13 questa iniquità sarà per voi come una breccia che minaccia rovina, che sporge in un alto muro, il cui crollo avviene a un tratto, in un istante, 14 e che si spezza come si spezza un vaso del vasaio che uno frantuma senza pietà, e tra i rottami del quale non si trova frammento che serva a prendere fuoco dal focolare o ad attingere acqua dalla cisterna. 15 Poiché così aveva detto il Signore, Dio, il Santo d’Israele: «Nel tornare a me e nello stare sereni sarà la vostra salvezza; nella calma e nella fiducia sarà la vostra forza». Ma voi non avete voluto! 16 Avete detto: «No, noi galopperemo sui nostri cavalli!» E per questo galopperete! E: «Cavalcheremo su veloci destrieri!» E per questo quelli che v’inseguiranno saranno veloci! 17 Mille di voi fuggiranno alla minaccia di uno solo; alla minaccia di cinque vi darete alla fuga, finché rimaniate come un palo in vetta a un monte, come uno stendardo sopra un colle.

Promesse per l’avvenire

18 Tuttavia il Signore desidera farvi grazia, per questo sorgerà per concedervi misericordia; poiché il Signore è un Dio di giustizia. Beati quelli che sperano in lui! 19 Sì, o popolo di Sion che abiti a Gerusalemme, tu non piangerai più! Egli, certo, ti farà grazia all’udire il tuo grido; appena ti avrà udito, ti risponderà. 20 Il Signore vi darà, sì, del pane d’angoscia e dell’acqua d’oppressione, ma quelli che ti insegnano non dovranno più nascondersi; e i tuoi occhi vedranno chi ti insegna. 21 Quando andrete a destra o quando andrete a sinistra, le tue orecchie udranno dietro a te una voce che dirà: «Questa è la via; camminate per essa!» 22 Considererete come cose contaminate le vostre immagini scolpite, ricoperte d’argento, e le vostre immagini fuse, rivestite d’oro; le getterete via come una cosa impura. «Fuori di qui!», direte loro. 23 Egli ti darà la pioggia per la semenza con cui avrai seminato il suolo, e il pane, che il suolo produrrà saporito e abbondante. In quel giorno il tuo bestiame pascolerà in vasti pascoli; 24 i buoi e gli asini che lavorano la terra mangeranno foraggi salati, ventilati con la pala e il ventilabro. 25 Sopra ogni alto monte e sopra ogni elevato colle ci saranno ruscelli, acque correnti, nel giorno del gran massacro, quando cadranno le torri. 26 La luce della luna sarà come la luce del sole e la luce del sole sarà sette volte più viva, come la luce di sette giorni assieme, nel giorno che il Signore fascerà la ferita del suo popolo e guarirà la piaga da lui fatta con le sue percosse.

Giudizio contro gli Assiri

27 Ecco, il nome del Signore viene da lontano; la sua ira è ardente, grande è il suo furore; le sue labbra sono piene d’indignazione, la sua lingua è come un fuoco divorante; 28 il suo fiato è come un torrente che straripa, che arriva fino al collo. Egli viene a vagliare le nazioni con il vaglio della distruzione e a mettere tra le mascelle dei popoli un morso che li faccia fuorviare. 29 Allora intonerete dei canti, come la notte quando si celebra una festa; avrete la gioia nel cuore, come colui che cammina al suono del flauto per andare al monte del Signore, alla Rocca d’Israele. 30 Il Signore farà udire la sua voce maestosa e mostrerà come colpisce con il suo braccio, nel furore della sua ira, tra le fiamme di un fuoco divorante, in mezzo a una tempesta, a un diluvio di pioggia, e a una gragnuola di sassi. 31 Poiché, alla voce del Signore, l’Assiro sarà costernato; il Signore lo colpirà con il suo bastone; 32 ogni passaggio del flagello destinatogli, che il Signore gli farà piombare addosso, sarà accompagnato dal suono di tamburelli e di cetre; il Signore combatterà contro di lui a mano alzata. 33 Poiché da lungo tempo Tofet* è preparato, è pronto anche per il re; è profondo e ampio. Sul suo rogo c’è fuoco e legna in abbondanza; il soffio del Signore, come un torrente di zolfo, sta per accenderlo.
