1Lord, you have been our dwelling-place throughout all generations.2Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the whole world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God.3You turn people back to dust, saying, ‘Return to dust, you mortals.’4A thousand years in your sight are like a day that has just gone by, or like a watch in the night.5Yet you sweep people away in the sleep of death – they are like the new grass of the morning:6In the morning it springs up new, but by evening it is dry and withered.7We are consumed by your anger and terrified by your indignation.8You have set our iniquities before you, our secret sins in the light of your presence.9All our days pass away under your wrath; we finish our years with a moan.10Our days may come to seventy years, or eighty, if our strength endures; yet the best of them are but trouble and sorrow, for they quickly pass, and we fly away.11If only we knew the power of your anger! Your wrath is as great as the fear that is your due.12Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.13Relent, Lord! How long will it be? Der ewige Gott – der vergängliche Mensch
1Ein Gebet von Mose, dem Mann Gottes. Herr, seit Menschengedenken warst du unser Schutz.*2Du, Gott, warst schon, bevor die Berge geboren wurden und die Erde unter Wehen entstand, und du bleibst in alle Ewigkeit.3Du sagst zum Menschen: »Werde wieder Staub!« So bringst du ihn dorthin zurück, woher er gekommen ist.4Für dich sind tausend Jahre wie ein Tag, so wie gestern – im Nu vergangen, so kurz wie ein paar Nachtstunden.5Du scheuchst die Menschen fort, sie verschwinden wie ein Traum.* Sie sind vergänglich wie das Gras:6Morgens noch grünt und blüht es, am Abend schon ist es verwelkt.7Weil du zornig bist und dich gegen uns stellst, sind wir verloren und müssen vergehen.8Denn du siehst die geheimsten Fehler; alle unsere Vergehen deckst du auf.9Dein Zorn liegt schwer auf unserem Leben, darum ist es so flüchtig wie ein Seufzer.10Siebzig Jahre sind uns zugemessen, wenn es hoch kommt, achtzig – doch selbst die besten davon sind Mühe und Last! Wie schnell ist alles vorbei und wir sind nicht mehr!11Doch wer begreift schon, wie furchtbar dein Zorn ist, und wer nimmt ihn sich zu Herzen?12Lass uns erkennen, wie kurz unser Leben ist, damit wir zur Einsicht kommen!13HERR, wie lange zürnst du uns noch? Hab doch Erbarmen mit uns und wende dich uns wieder zu!14Lass uns jeden Morgen spüren, dass du zu uns hältst, dann sind unsere Tage erfüllt von Jubel und Dank.15Viele Jahre hast du Unglück über uns gebracht; gib uns nun ebenso viele Freudenjahre!16Lass uns noch erleben, dass du eingreifst, zeig unseren Kindern deine große Macht!17Herr, unser Gott, sei freundlich zu uns! Lass unsere Arbeit nicht vergeblich sein! Ja, Herr, lass gelingen, was wir tun!
