Jesus is tested in the wilderness

1 Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted* by the devil. 2 After fasting for forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. 3 The tempter came to him and said, ‘If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.’ 4 Jesus answered, ‘It is written: “Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.” ’ 5 Then the devil took him to the holy city and set him on the highest point of the temple. 6 ‘If you are the Son of God,’ he said, ‘throw yourself down. For it is written: ‘ “He will command his angels concerning you, and they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.” ’ 7 Jesus answered him, ‘It is also written: “Do not put the Lord your God to the test.” ’ 8 Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendour. 9 ‘All this I will give you,’ he said, ‘if you will bow down and worship me.’ 10 Jesus said to him, ‘Away from me, Satan! For it is written: “Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.” ’ 11 Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him.

Jesus begins to preach

12 When Jesus heard that John had been put in prison, he withdrew to Galilee. 13 Leaving Nazareth, he went and lived in Capernaum, which was by the lake in the area of Zebulun and Naphtali – 14 to fulfil what was said through the prophet Isaiah: 15 ‘Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali, the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles – 16 the people living in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned.’ 17 From that time on Jesus began to preach, ‘Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.’

Jesus calls his first disciples

18 As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. 19 ‘Come, follow me,’ Jesus said, ‘and I will send you out to fish for people.’ 20 At once they left their nets and followed him. 21 Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee, preparing their nets. Jesus called them, 22 and immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.

Jesus heals the sick

23 Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom, and healing every disease and illness among the people. 24 News about him spread all over Syria, and people brought to him all who were ill with various diseases, those suffering severe pain, the demon-possessed, those having seizures, and the paralysed; and he healed them. 25 Large crowds from Galilee, the Decapolis,* Jerusalem, Judea and the region across the Jordan followed him.

Jesus wird auf die Probe gestellt

1 Danach führte der Geist Gottes Jesus in die Wüste, wo er vom Teufel auf die Probe gestellt werden sollte. 2 Nachdem er vierzig Tage und Nächte gefastet hatte, war er hungrig. 3 Da trat der Versucher an ihn heran und sagte: »Wenn du Gottes Sohn bist, dann befiehl doch, dass die Steine hier zu Brot werden!« 4 Jesus antwortete: »In den Heiligen Schriften steht: ›Der Mensch lebt nicht nur von Brot; er lebt von jedem Wort, das Gott spricht.‹« 5 Darauf führte der Teufel ihn in die Heilige Stadt, stellte ihn auf den höchsten Punkt des Tempels 6 und sagte: »Wenn du Gottes Sohn bist, dann spring doch hinunter; denn in den Heiligen Schriften steht: ›Deinetwegen wird Gott seine Engel schicken und sie werden dich auf Händen tragen, damit du dich an keinem Stein stößt.‹« 7 Jesus antwortete: »In den Heiligen Schriften heißt es auch: ›Du sollst den Herrn, deinen Gott, nicht herausfordern.‹« 8 Zuletzt führte der Teufel Jesus auf einen sehr hohen Berg, zeigte ihm alle Reiche der Welt in ihrer Größe und Pracht 9 und sagte: »Dies alles will ich dir geben, wenn du dich vor mir niederwirfst und mich anbetest.« 10 Da sagte Jesus: »Weg mit dir, Satan! In den Heiligen Schriften heißt es: ›Vor dem Herrn, deinem Gott, wirf dich nieder, ihn sollst du anbeten und niemand sonst.‹« 11 Darauf ließ der Teufel von Jesus ab, und Engel kamen und versorgten ihn.

Jesus beginnt sein Wirken in Galiläa

12 Als Jesus hörte, dass man Johannes ins Gefängnis geworfen hatte,* zog er sich nach Galiläa zurück. 13 Er blieb aber nicht in Nazaret, sondern nahm seinen Wohnsitz in Kafarnaum, einer Stadt am See Gennesaret, im Gebiet der Stämme Sebulon und Naftali. 14 Das geschah, damit in Erfüllung ging, was Gott durch den Propheten Jesaja angekündigt hatte: 15 »Du Land von Sebulon und Naftali, am See gelegen und jenseits des Jordans, Galiläa der gottfernen Völker! 16 Das Volk, das im Dunkeln lebt, sieht ein großes Licht. Und für alle, die im finsteren Land des Todes wohnen, leuchtet ein Licht auf!« 17 Von da an verkündete Jesus seine Botschaft: »Ändert euer Leben! Gott wird jetzt seine Herrschaft aufrichten und sein Werk vollenden!«*

Jesus beruft vier Fischer zu Jüngern

18 Als Jesus am See von Galiläa entlangging, sah er zwei Brüder: Simon – bekannt unter dem Namen Petrus – und Andreas. Sie warfen gerade ihr Netz aus, denn sie waren Fischer. 19 Jesus sagte zu ihnen: »Kommt, folgt mir! Ich mache euch zu Menschenfischern.« 20 Sofort ließen sie ihre Netze liegen und folgten ihm. 21 Als Jesus von dort weiterging, sah er zwei andere Brüder: Jakobus, den Sohn von Zebedäus, und seinen Bruder Johannes. Sie waren mit ihrem Vater im Boot und richteten die Netze her. Jesus rief sie, 22 und sofort verließen sie das Boot und ihren Vater und folgten ihm.

Jesus lehrt und heilt, um ihn sammelt sich das Volk

23 Jesus zog durch ganz Galiläa. Er lehrte in den Synagogen und verkündete die Gute Nachricht, dass Gott jetzt seine Herrschaft aufrichten und sein Werk vollenden wird.* Er heilte alle Krankheiten und Leiden im Volk. 24 Die Kunde von ihm verbreitete sich sogar in ganz Syrien. Die Leute brachten alle zu Jesus, die an irgendwelchen Krankheiten oder Beschwerden litten, auch Besessene, Epileptiker und Gelähmte, und er machte sie gesund. 25 Große Menschenmengen aus Galiläa, aus dem Gebiet der Zehn Städte, aus Jerusalem und Judäa und von der anderen Seite des Jordans zogen mit ihm.
