Rahab and the spies

1 Then Joshua son of Nun secretly sent two spies from Shittim. ‘Go, look over the land,’ he said, ‘especially Jericho.’ So they went and entered the house of a prostitute named Rahab and stayed there. 2 The king of Jericho was told, ‘Look, some of the Israelites have come here tonight to spy out the land.’ 3 So the king of Jericho sent this message to Rahab: ‘Bring out the men who came to you and entered your house, because they have come to spy out the whole land.’ 4 But the woman had taken the two men and hidden them. She said, ‘Yes, the men came to me, but I did not know where they had come from. 5 At dusk, when it was time to close the city gate, they left. I don’t know which way they went. Go after them quickly. You may catch up with them.’ 6 (But she had taken them up to the roof and hidden them under the stalks of flax she had laid out on the roof.) 7 So the men set out in pursuit of the spies on the road that leads to the fords of the Jordan, and as soon as the pursuers had gone out, the gate was shut. 8 Before the spies lay down for the night, she went up on the roof 9 and said to them, ‘I know that the Lord has given this land to you and that a great fear of you has fallen on us, so that all who live in this country are melting in fear because of you. 10 We have heard how the Lord dried up the water of the Red Sea* for you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to Sihon and Og, the two kings of the Amorites east of the Jordan, whom you completely destroyed.* 11 When we heard of it, our hearts sank and everyone’s courage failed because of you, for the Lord your God is God in heaven above and on the earth below. 12 ‘Now then, please swear to me by the Lord that you will show kindness to my family, because I have shown kindness to you. Give me a sure sign 13 that you will spare the lives of my father and mother, my brothers and sisters, and all who belong to them – and that you will save us from death.’ 14 ‘Our lives for your lives!’ the men assured her. ‘If you don’t tell what we are doing, we will treat you kindly and faithfully when the Lord gives us the land.’ 15 So she let them down by a rope through the window, for the house she lived in was part of the city wall. 16 She said to them, ‘Go to the hills so that the pursuers will not find you. Hide yourselves there for three days until they return, and then go on your way.’ 17 Now the men had said to her, ‘This oath you made us swear will not be binding on us 18 unless, when we enter the land, you have tied this scarlet cord in the window through which you let us down, and unless you have brought your father and mother, your brothers and all your family into your house. 19 If any of them go outside your house into the street, their blood will be on their own heads; we will not be responsible. As for those who are in the house with you, their blood will be on our head if a hand is laid on them. 20 But if you tell what we are doing, we will be released from the oath you made us swear.’ 21 ‘Agreed,’ she replied. ‘Let it be as you say.’ So she sent them away, and they departed. And she tied the scarlet cord in the window. 22 When they left, they went into the hills and stayed there three days, until the pursuers had searched all along the road and returned without finding them. 23 Then the two men started back. They went down out of the hills, forded the river and came to Joshua son of Nun and told him everything that had happened to them. 24 They said to Joshua, ‘The Lord has surely given the whole land into our hands; all the people are melting in fear because of us.’

1 Von Schittim aus schickte Josua heimlich zwei Männer auf die andere Seite des Jordans und befahl ihnen: »Erkundet das Land dort drüben und besonders die Stadt Jericho!« Die Kundschafter kamen in die Stadt und kehrten im Haus einer Prostituierten namens Rahab ein, um dort zu übernachten. 2 Noch am selben Abend wurde dem König von Jericho gemeldet, dass Kundschafter der Israeliten in die Stadt gekommen waren. 3 Sofort schickte er Wachtleute zu Rahab und befahl ihr: »Gib die beiden Männer heraus, die bei dir eingekehrt sind! Sie sind nur gekommen, um unser Land auszuspionieren.« 4 Rahab versteckte die beiden auf dem flachen Dach ihres Hauses unter einem Haufen von Flachs und sagte zu den Wachtleuten: »Ja, es waren zwei Männer bei mir. Aber ich wusste nicht, woher sie kamen. Beim Einbruch der Dunkelheit, bevor das Tor geschlossen wurde, haben sie die Stadt wieder verlassen. Ich weiß nicht, in welche Richtung sie gegangen sind. Aber wenn ihr schnell hinterherlauft, könnt ihr sie noch einholen.« 7 Die Wachtleute nahmen sofort die Verfolgung auf und liefen bis an den Jordanübergang. Das Stadttor wurde wieder hinter ihnen geschlossen.

Die Kanaaniter haben den Mut verloren

8 Noch bevor sich die beiden Kundschafter zum Schlafen zurechtgelegt hatten, kam Rahab zu ihnen aufs Dach 9 und sagte: »Ich weiß, dass der HERR euch dieses Land gegeben hat. Alle seine Bewohner zittern vor euch, sie sind vor Angst wie gelähmt. 10 Wir haben gehört, dass euer Gott euch einen Weg durch das Schilfmeer gebahnt hat, als ihr aus Ägypten gezogen seid. Wir wissen auch, dass ihr auf der anderen Seite des Jordans die beiden Amoriterkönige Sihon und Og besiegt und getötet habt. 11 Deshalb haben wir allen Mut verloren. Keiner von uns wagt, gegen euch zu kämpfen. Denn der HERR, euer Gott, hat die Macht im Himmel und auf der Erde. 12 Ich bitte euch, schwört mir bei ihm, dass ihr an meiner Familie genauso handelt, wie ich an euch gehandelt habe. Und gebt mir ein zuverlässiges Zeichen, dass ihr es ernst meint 13 und meinen Angehörigen das Leben retten wollt, meinem Vater und meiner Mutter, meinen Brüdern und meinen Schwestern und meinem ganzen Hausgesinde!« 14 Die Kundschafter antworteten ihr: »Der HERR soll unser eigenes Leben von uns fordern, wenn einem von euch etwas geschieht! Aber ihr dürft niemand sagen, dass wir hier waren. Dann werden wir uns an die Abmachung halten und dich und deine Angehörigen verschonen, wenn der HERR uns dieses Land gibt.«

Die Rückkehr der Kundschafter

15 Rahabs Haus war unmittelbar an die Stadtmauer gebaut. So ließ sie die beiden Männer an einem Seil aus dem Fenster die Mauer hinunter. 16 Dabei sagte sie zu ihnen: »Geht zuerst ins Bergland und versteckt euch dort, damit ihr nicht euren Verfolgern in die Hände lauft. Wartet drei Tage lang, bis sie die Verfolgung aufgegeben haben. Dann könnt ihr unbehelligt in euer Lager zurückkehren.« 17 Zum Abschied sagten die Kundschafter: »Hör, was du tun musst, andernfalls ist unser Eid ungültig: 18 Binde diese rote Schnur an das Fenster, durch das du uns hinuntergelassen hast, und nimm deine Eltern und Geschwister und alle anderen Verwandten zu dir ins Haus. 19 Niemand darf es verlassen. Wer hinausgeht und getötet wird, ist selbst daran schuld. Wir übernehmen dafür keine Verantwortung. Nur wenn jemand drinnen im Haus umgebracht wird, trifft die Schuld uns. 20 Du darfst aber nichts verraten! Sonst sind wir nicht mehr an den Eid gebunden, den wir dir geschworen haben.« 21 »Gut«, sagte Rahab, »so soll es sein«, und ließ sie gehen. Dann band sie die rote Schnur ans Fenster. 22 Die beiden Männer versteckten sich drei Tage in den Bergen, bis ihre Verfolger wieder in die Stadt zurückgekehrt waren. Die Wächter hatten alle Wege in der ganzen Gegend abgesucht, aber niemand gefunden. 23 Danach machten sich die Kundschafter auf den Rückweg. Sie stiegen ins Jordantal hinunter, überquerten den Fluss und kamen ins Lager der Israeliten. Sie berichteten Josua, was sie erlebt hatten, 24 und versicherten ihm: »Der HERR hat das ganze Land in unsere Hand gegeben. Alle seine Bewohner zittern vor uns.«
