Jeremia 41 | New International Version

1 In the seventh month Ishmael son of Nethaniah, the son of Elishama, who was of royal blood and had been one of the king’s officers, came with ten men to Gedaliah son of Ahikam at Mizpah. While they were eating together there,

2 Ishmael son of Nethaniah and the ten men who were with him got up and struck down Gedaliah son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, with the sword, killing the one whom the king of Babylon had appointed as governor over the land.

3 Ishmael also killed all the men of Judah who were with Gedaliah at Mizpah, as well as the Babylonian* soldiers who were there.

4 The day after Gedaliah’s assassination, before anyone knew about it,

5 eighty men who had shaved off their beards, torn their clothes and cut themselves came from Shechem, Shiloh and Samaria, bringing grain offerings and incense with them to the house of the Lord.

6 Ishmael son of Nethaniah went out from Mizpah to meet them, weeping as he went. When he met them, he said, ‘Come to Gedaliah son of Ahikam.’

7 When they went into the city, Ishmael son of Nethaniah and the men who were with him slaughtered them and threw them into a cistern.

8 But ten of them said to Ishmael, ‘Don’t kill us! We have wheat and barley, olive oil and honey, hidden in a field.’ So he let them alone and did not kill them with the others.

9 Now the cistern where he threw all the bodies of the men he had killed along with Gedaliah was the one King Asa had made as part of his defence against Baasha king of Israel. Ishmael son of Nethaniah filled it with the dead.

10 Ishmael made captives of all the rest of the people who were in Mizpah – the king’s daughters along with all the others who were left there, over whom Nebuzaradan commander of the imperial guard had appointed Gedaliah son of Ahikam. Ishmael son of Nethaniah took them captive and set out to cross over to the Ammonites.

11 When Johanan son of Kareah and all the army officers who were with him heard about all the crimes Ishmael son of Nethaniah had committed,

12 they took all their men and went to fight Ishmael son of Nethaniah. They caught up with him near the great pool in Gibeon.

13 When all the people Ishmael had with him saw Johanan son of Kareah and the army officers who were with him, they were glad.

14 All the people Ishmael had taken captive at Mizpah turned and went over to Johanan son of Kareah.

15 But Ishmael son of Nethaniah and eight of his men escaped from Johanan and fled to the Ammonites.

Flight to Egypt

16 Then Johanan son of Kareah and all the army officers who were with him led away all the people of Mizpah who had survived, whom Johanan had recovered from Ishmael son of Nethaniah after Ishmael had assassinated Gedaliah son of Ahikam – the soldiers, women, children and court officials he had recovered from Gibeon.

17 And they went on, stopping at Geruth Kimham near Bethlehem on their way to Egypt

18 to escape the Babylonians.* They were afraid of them because Ishmael son of Nethaniah had killed Gedaliah son of Ahikam, whom the king of Babylon had appointed as governor over the land.

1 Im siebten Monat desselben Jahres kam Jischmaël, der Sohn von Netanja und Enkel von Elischama, in Begleitung von zehn anderen Männern zu Gedalja nach Mizpa. Jischmaël gehörte zur königlichen Familie und war einer der höchsten Offiziere des Königs gewesen. Während sie alle miteinander aßen,

2 standen Jischmaël und seine Begleiter auf, zogen ihre Schwerter und töteten Gedalja, den der Babylonierkönig zum Statthalter für das Land eingesetzt hatte.

3 Jischmaël brachte auch die anderen Männer aus Juda um, die bei Gedalja in Mizpa waren, und ebenso die babylonischen Kriegsleute, die er dort fand.

Jischmaël ermordet Pilger aus Samarien

4 Am folgenden Tag – noch hatte niemand erfahren, dass Gedalja von Jischmaël ermordet worden war –

5 näherten sich Mizpa achtzig Männer. Zum Zeichen der Trauer waren ihre Bärte abgeschnitten, ihre Kleider zerrissen, ihre Haut blutig geritzt. Sie kamen aus Sichem, Schilo und Samaria und wollten nach Jerusalem, um Weihrauch und andere Opfergaben zum Tempel des HERRN zu bringen.

6 Jischmaël ging weinend aus Mizpa hinaus ihnen entgegen und lud sie ein: »Kommt zu Gedalja, dem Sohn Ahikams!«

7 Als die Männer aber in der Stadt waren, wurden sie von Jischmaël und seinen Leuten niedergemetzelt und ihre Leichen in eine Zisterne geworfen.

8 Nur zehn von ihnen wurden verschont. Sie hatten zu Jischmaël gesagt: »Töte uns nicht! Wir zeigen dir, wo wir auf dem Feld Vorräte versteckt haben: Weizen und Gerste, Öl und Honig.«

9 Die Zisterne, in die Jischmaël die Leichen der Ermordeten werfen ließ, war dieselbe große* Zisterne, die König Asa von Juda hatte aushauen lassen, als er gegen Bascha, den König von Israel, Krieg führte. Jetzt füllte Jischmaël, der Sohn von Netanja, sie ganz mit Leichen.

Die Mitgeschleppten werden befreit

10 Den Rest der Bevölkerung von Mizpa und auch die Töchter des Königs von Juda, alle, die Nebusaradan, der Befehlshaber der Leibwache, in die Obhut Gedaljas gegeben hatte, nahm Jischmaël gefangen und zog ab, um mit ihnen auf ammonitisches Gebiet hinüberzugelangen.

11 Als Johanan, der Sohn Kareachs, und die anderen Truppenführer hörten, was Jischmaël getan hatte,

12 verfolgten sie ihn mit allen ihren Männern und holten ihn beim großen Teich von Gibeon ein.

13 Die Leute, die Jischmaël aus Mizpa mitgeschleppt hatte, freuten sich, als sie Johanan und die anderen Truppenführer kommen sahen.

14 Sie kehrten Jischmaël den Rücken und liefen zu Johanan, dem Sohn Kareachs, über.

15 Jischmaël entkam mit acht seiner Männer und ging zu den Ammonitern.

Aufbruch nach Ägypten

16 Johanan, der Sohn Kareachs, und die anderen Truppenführer übernahmen nun die Verantwortung für die Leute, die Jischmaël nach dem Mord an Gedalja aus Mizpa weggeführt hatte und die sie ihm bei Gibeon abgejagt hatten. Es waren Männer, Frauen und Kinder, und unter den Männern auch Hofbeamte und Kriegsleute.

17 Sie alle flohen nach Süden bis zur Herberge Kimhams bei Betlehem. Dort machten sie vorläufig halt, um dann weiter nach Ägypten zu ziehen.

18 Sie hatten Angst vor den Babyloniern, denn Jischmaël hatte Gedalja ermordet, den der Babylonierkönig zum Statthalter für Juda eingesetzt hatte.
