1Some time later Joseph was told, ‘Your father is ill.’ So he took his two sons Manasseh and Ephraim along with him.2When Jacob was told, ‘Your son Joseph has come to you,’ Israel rallied his strength and sat up on the bed.3Jacob said to Joseph, ‘God Almighty* appeared to me at Luz in the land of Canaan, and there he blessed me4and said to me, “I am going to make you fruitful and increase your numbers. I will make you a community of peoples, and I will give this land as an everlasting possession to your descendants after you.”5‘Now then, your two sons born to you in Egypt before I came to you here will be reckoned as mine; Ephraim and Manasseh will be mine, just as Reuben and Simeon are mine.6Any children born to you after them will be yours; in the territory they inherit they will be reckoned under the names of their brothers.7As I was returning from Paddan,* to my sorrow Rachel died in the land of Canaan while we were still on the way, a little distance from Ephrath. So I buried her there beside the road to Ephrath’ (that is, Bethlehem).8When Israel saw the sons of Joseph, he asked, ‘Who are these?’9‘They are the sons God has given me here,’ Joseph said to his father. Then Israel said, ‘Bring them to me so that I may bless them.’10Now Israel’s eyes were failing because of old age, and he could hardly see. So Joseph brought his sons close to him, and his father kissed them and embraced them.11Israel said to Joseph, ‘I never expected to see your face again, and now God has allowed me to see your children too.’12Then Joseph removed them from Israel’s knees and bowed down with his face to the ground.13And Joseph took both of them, Ephraim on his right towards Israel’s left hand and Manasseh on his left towards Israel’s right hand, and brought them close to him.14But Israel reached out his right hand and put it on Ephraim’s head, though he was the younger, and crossing his arms, he put his left hand on Manasseh’s head, even though Manasseh was the firstborn.15Then he blessed Joseph and said, ‘May the God before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac walked faithfully, the God who has been my shepherd all my life to this day,16the Angel who has delivered me from all harm – may he bless these boys. May they be called by my name and the names of my fathers Abraham and Isaac, and may they increase greatly on the earth.’17When Joseph saw his father placing his right hand on Ephraim’s head he was displeased; so he took hold of his father’s hand to move it from Ephraim’s head to Manasseh’s head.18Joseph said to him, ‘No, my father, this one is the firstborn; put your right hand on his head.’19But his father refused and said, ‘I know, my son, I know. He too will become a people, and he too will become great. Nevertheless, his younger brother will be greater than he, and his descendants will become a group of nations.’20He blessed them that day and said, ‘In your* name will Israel pronounce this blessing: “May God make you like Ephraim and Manasseh.” ’ So he put Ephraim ahead of Manasseh.21Then Israel said to Joseph, ‘I am about to die, but God will be with you* and take you* back to the land of your* fathers.22And to you I give one more ridge of land* than to your brothers, the ridge I took from the Amorites with my sword and my bow.’

1Nach einiger Zeit erhielt Josef die Nachricht, dass sein Vater krank sei. Da nahm er seine beiden Söhne Manasse und Efraïm und machte sich auf den Weg.2Als Jakob gesagt wurde: »Dein Sohn Josef ist da«, nahm er* alle seine Kräfte zusammen und setzte sich im Bett auf.3Er sagte zu Josef: »Gott, der Gewaltige, erschien mir in Lus im Land Kanaan. Er segnete mich4und sagte: ›Ich will dich fruchtbar machen und vermehren* und dich zu einer ganzen Schar von Völkern machen. Und dieses Land will ich deinen Nachkommen für alle Zeiten zum Besitz geben.‹ Das hat er mir zugesagt.5Deine beiden Söhne Efraïm und Manasse aber, die dir hier in Ägypten geboren wurden, bevor ich ins Land kam, die nehme ich als meine eigenen Söhne an; sie sollen mir genauso viel gelten wie Ruben und Simeon.6Deine späteren Söhne und ihre Nachkommen sollen als deine Nachkommenschaft gelten, doch bekommen sie ihren Anteil am Landbesitz im Gebiet ihrer älteren Brüder.7Ich tue das deiner Mutter Rahel zuliebe. Sie starb, als ich aus Mesopotamien ins Land Kanaan zurückkam, kurz vor der Stadt Efrata, und ich begrub sie dort am Wegrand.« – Efrata heißt jetzt Betlehem.8Jakobs Blick fiel auf Manasse und Efraïm, die Söhne Josefs. »Wen bringst du da mit?«, fragte er Josef.9Seine Augen waren altersschwach geworden und er konnte nicht mehr deutlich sehen. »Es sind die Söhne, die Gott mir hier in Ägypten geschenkt hat«, erwiderte Josef. »Bring sie her«, sagte Jakob, »ich will sie segnen!« Jakob zog sie an sich, umarmte und küsste sie.11Er sagte zu Josef: »Ich hätte nie geglaubt, dich wiederzusehen, und jetzt lässt Gott mich sogar noch deine Kinder sehen.«12Josef nahm die beiden von Jakobs Knien und beugte sich vor seinem Vater bis zur Erde.13Dann nahm er Efraïm an die rechte Hand, sodass er von Jakob aus gesehen links stand, und an seine linke Hand nahm er Manasse. So brachte er sie zu seinem Vater.14Jakob aber kreuzte seine Hände und legte die rechte auf den Kopf des jüngeren Bruders Efraïm und die linke auf den Kopf Manasses, obwohl Manasse der Erstgeborene war.15Dann segnete er die Söhne Josefs* und sagte: »Ich bete zu dem Gott, nach dessen Willen meine Väter, Abraham und Isaak, sich stets gerichtet haben. Ich bete zu dem Gott, der mich wie ein Hirt mein Leben lang geführt und beschützt hat.16Ich bete zu dem Gott,* der in aller Not zur Stelle war und mich gerettet hat. Er segne diese Kinder, damit mein Name und der meiner Väter Abraham und Isaak in ihnen und ihren Nachkommen fortlebe. Er lasse ihre Nachkommen zahlreich werden, damit sie das Land füllen.«17Josef gefiel es nicht, dass sein Vater die rechte Hand auf Efraïm gelegt hatte. Deshalb nahm er sie und wollte sie auf Manasse legen.18»Du irrst, Vater«, sagte er, »dieser ist der Erstgeborene, auf ihn musst du die rechte Hand legen!«19Aber Jakob wehrte ab: »Das weiß ich«, sagte er. »Sei unbesorgt, auch die Nachkommen Manasses sollen zu einem großen Volk werden. Aber sein jüngerer Bruder soll noch größer werden als er; seine Nachkommen sollen zu einer Menge von Völkern werden.«20So segnete Jakob die Söhne Josefs und sagte zu ihm: »Du und deine Kinder, ihr werdet in Israel ein Beispiel besonderen Segens sein. Wenn die Leute in Israel einander Glück wünschen, werden sie sagen: ›Gott segne dich wie Efraïm und Manasse!‹« Ganz bewusst nannte er dabei Efraïm an erster Stelle.21Dann sagte er: »Ich sterbe jetzt. Gott wird euch beistehen und euch in das Land zurückbringen, das er euren Vorfahren versprochen hat.22Dir aber gebe ich einen Bergrücken* hoch über den Wohnsitzen deiner Brüder. Ich habe ihn den Amoritern mit Schwert und Bogen weggenommen.«
