1Some time later God tested Abraham. He said to him, ‘Abraham!’ ‘Here I am,’ he replied.2Then God said, ‘Take your son, your only son, whom you love – Isaac – and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on a mountain that I will show you.’3Early the next morning Abraham got up and loaded his donkey. He took with him two of his servants and his son Isaac. When he had cut enough wood for the burnt offering, he set out for the place God had told him about.4On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place in the distance.5He said to his servants, ‘Stay here with the donkey while I and the boy go over there. We will worship and then we will come back to you.’6Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and placed it on his son Isaac, and he himself carried the fire and the knife. As the two of them went on together,7Isaac spoke up and said to his father Abraham, ‘Father?’ ‘Yes, my son?’ Abraham replied. ‘The fire and wood are here,’ Isaac said, ‘but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?’8Abraham answered, ‘God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.’ And the two of them went on together.9When they reached the place God had told him about, Abraham built an altar there and arranged the wood on it. He bound his son Isaac and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood.10Then he reached out his hand and took the knife to slay his son.11But the angel of the Lord called out to him from heaven, ‘Abraham! Abraham!’ ‘Here I am,’ he replied.12‘Do not lay a hand on the boy,’ he said. ‘Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son.’13Abraham looked up and there in a thicket he saw a ram* caught by its horns. He went over and took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering instead of his son.14So Abraham called that place The Lord Will Provide. And to this day it is said, ‘On the mountain of the Lord it will be provided.’15The angel of the Lord called to Abraham from heaven a second time16and said, ‘I swear by myself, declares the Lord, that because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son,17I will surely bless you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will take possession of the cities of their enemies,18and through your offspring* all nations on earth will be blessed,* because you have obeyed me.’19Then Abraham returned to his servants, and they set off together for Beersheba. And Abraham stayed in Beersheba.
Nahor’s sons
20Some time later Abraham was told, ‘Milkah is also a mother; she has borne sons to your brother Nahor:21Uz the firstborn, Buz his brother, Kemuel (the father of Aram),22Kesed, Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaph and Bethuel.’23Bethuel became the father of Rebekah. Milkah bore these eight sons to Abraham’s brother Nahor.24His concubine, whose name was Reumah, also had sons: Tebah, Gaham, Tahash and Maakah.

1Einige Zeit danach geschah es: Gott stellte Abraham auf die Probe. »Abraham!«, rief er. »Ja?«, erwiderte Abraham.2»Nimm deinen Sohn«, sagte Gott, »deinen einzigen, der dir ans Herz gewachsen ist, den Isaak! Geh mit ihm ins Land Morija auf einen Berg, den ich dir nennen werde, und opfere ihn mir dort als Brandopfer.«3Am nächsten Morgen stand Abraham früh auf. Er spaltete Holz für das Opferfeuer, belud seinen Esel und machte sich mit seinem Sohn auf den Weg zu dem Ort, von dem Gott gesprochen hatte. Auch zwei Knechte nahm er mit.4Am dritten Tag erblickte er den Berg in der Ferne.5Da sagte er zu den Knechten: »Bleibt hier mit dem Esel! Ich gehe mit dem Jungen dort hinauf, um mich vor Gott niederzuwerfen; dann kommen wir wieder zurück.«6Abraham packte seinem Sohn die Holzscheite auf den Rücken; er selbst nahm das Becken mit glühenden Kohlen und das Messer. So gingen die beiden miteinander.7Nach einer Weile sagte Isaak: »Vater!« »Ja, mein Sohn?« »Feuer und Holz haben wir, aber wo ist das Lamm für das Opfer?«8»Gott wird schon für ein Opferlamm sorgen!« So gingen die beiden miteinander.9Sie kamen zu dem Ort, von dem Gott zu Abraham gesprochen hatte. Auf dem Berg baute Abraham einen Altar und schichtete die Holzscheite auf. Er fesselte Isaak und legte ihn auf den Altar, oben auf den Holzstoß.10Schon fasste er nach dem Messer, um seinen Sohn zu schlachten,11da rief der Engel des HERRN vom Himmel her: »Abraham! Abraham!« »Ja?«, erwiderte er,12und der Engel rief: »Halt ein! Tu dem Jungen nichts zuleide! Jetzt weiß ich, dass du Gott gehorchst. Du warst bereit, mir sogar deinen einzigen Sohn zu opfern.«13Als Abraham aufblickte, sah er einen einzelnen* Schafbock, der sich mit seinen Hörnern im Gestrüpp verfangen hatte. Er ging hinüber, nahm das Tier und opferte es anstelle seines Sohnes auf dem Altar.14Er nannte den Ort »Der HERR sorgt vor«. Noch heute sagt man: »Auf dem Berg des HERRN ist vorgesorgt.«15Noch einmal rief der Engel des HERRN vom Himmel her16und sagte zu Abraham: »Ich schwöre bei mir selbst, sagt der HERR: Weil du mir gehorcht hast und sogar bereit warst, mir deinen einzigen Sohn zu geben,17werde ich dich segnen! Deine Nachkommen mache ich so zahlreich wie die Sterne am Himmel und die Sandkörner am Meeresstrand. Sie werden ihre Feinde besiegen und ihre Städte erobern.18Bei allen Völkern der Erde werden die Leute zueinander sagen: ›Gott segne dich wie die Nachkommen Abrahams!‹* Das ist die Belohnung dafür, dass du meinem Befehl gehorcht hast.«19Abraham kehrte wieder zu seinen Knechten zurück und sie gingen miteinander nach Beerscheba. Dort blieb Abraham wohnen.
Die Nachkommen Nahors
20Bald danach erhielt Abraham die Nachricht: »Auch Milka hat deinem Bruder Nahor Söhne geboren.«21Es waren acht, die sie dem Bruder Abrahams geboren hatte: Uz, der Erstgeborene, Bus, Kemuël, von dem die Aramäer abstammen, Kesed, Haso, Pildasch, Jidlaf und Betuël, der Vater von Rebekka.24Außerdem hatte Nahors Nebenfrau Rëuma ihm die Söhne Tebach, Gaham, Tahasch und Maacha geboren.
