The table of nations

1 This is the account of Shem, Ham and Japheth, Noah’s sons, who themselves had sons after the flood.

The Japhethites

2 The sons* of Japheth: Gomer, Magog, Madai, Javan, Tubal, Meshek and Tiras. 3 The sons of Gomer: Ashkenaz, Riphath and Togarmah. 4 The sons of Javan: Elishah, Tarshish, the Kittites and the Rodanites.* 5 (From these the maritime peoples spread out into their territories by their clans within their nations, each with its own language.)

The Hamites

6 The sons of Ham: Cush, Egypt, Put and Canaan. 7 The sons of Cush: Seba, Havilah, Sabtah, Raamah and Sabteka. The sons of Raamah: Sheba and Dedan. 8 Cush was the father* of Nimrod, who became a mighty warrior on the earth. 9 He was a mighty hunter before the Lord; that is why it is said, ‘Like Nimrod, a mighty hunter before the Lord.’ 10 The first centres of his kingdom were Babylon, Uruk, Akkad and Kalneh, in* Shinar.* 11 From that land he went to Assyria, where he built Nineveh, Rehoboth Ir,* Calah 12 and Resen, which is between Nineveh and Calah – which is the great city. 13 Egypt was the father of the Ludites, Anamites, Lehabites, Naphtuhites, 14 Pathrusites, Kasluhites (from whom the Philistines came) and Caphtorites. 15 Canaan was the father of Sidon his firstborn,* and of the Hittites, 16 Jebusites, Amorites, Girgashites, 17 Hivites, Arkites, Sinites, 18 Arvadites, Zemarites and Hamathites. (Later the Canaanite clans scattered 19 and the borders of Canaan reached from Sidon towards Gerar as far as Gaza, and then towards Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboyim, as far as Lasha.) 20 These are the sons of Ham by their clans and languages, in their territories and nations.

The Semites

21 Sons were also born to Shem, whose elder brother was* Japheth; Shem was the ancestor of all the sons of Eber. 22 The sons of Shem: Elam, Ashur, Arphaxad, Lud and Aram. 23 The sons of Aram: Uz, Hul, Gether and Meshek.* 24 Arphaxad was the father of* Shelah, and Shelah the father of Eber. 25 Two sons were born to Eber: One was named Peleg,* because in his time the earth was divided; his brother was named Joktan. 26 Joktan was the father of Almodad, Sheleph, Hazarmaveth, Jerah, 27 Hadoram, Uzal, Diklah, 28 Obal, Abimael, Sheba, 29 Ophir, Havilah and Jobab. All these were sons of Joktan. 30 (The region where they lived stretched from Mesha towards Sephar, in the eastern hill country.) 31 These are the sons of Shem by their clans and languages, in their territories and nations. 32 These are the clans of Noah’s sons, according to their lines of descent, within their nations. From these the nations spread out over the earth after the flood.

1 Hier ist die Liste der Nachkommen Noachs: Noach hatte drei Söhne: Sem, Ham und Jafet. Deren Kinder wurden nach der großen Flut geboren. 2 Jafets Söhne sind: Gomer, Magog, Madai, Jawan, Tubal,* Meschech und Tiras. 3 Von Gomer stammen Aschkenas, Rifat und Togarma, 4 von Jawan Elischa, Tarschisch, die Kittäer und die Rodaniter.* 5 Die Nachkommen Jawans besiedelten die Küstenländer bis zum Rand der Erde. Diese alle wurden zu Völkern, von denen jedes nach Sippen geordnet in seinem Gebiet lebt und seine eigene Sprache hat. 6 Hams Söhne sind: Kusch, Mizrajim, Put und Kanaan.* 7 Von Kusch stammen Seba, Hawila, Sabta, Ragma und Sabtecha; von Ragma stammen Saba und Dedan. 8 Kusch zeugte einen Sohn namens Nimrod, der war der Erste, der fremde Völker seiner Herrschaft unterwarf. 9 Er war auch ein kühner Jäger; deshalb sagt man noch heute von jemand: »Er ist ein gewaltiger Jäger vor dem HERRN wie Nimrod.« 10 Zuerst herrschte er über die Städte Babel, Erech und Akkad, die alle* im Land Schinar liegen. 11 Von da aus zog er ins Land Assur. Dort baute er die Städte Ninive, Rehobot-Ir und Kelach 12 sowie Resen, das zwischen Ninive und Kelach liegt. Ninive ist die bekannte große Stadt. 13 Von Mizrajim stammen die Luditer, Anamiter, Lehabiter, Naftuhiter, 14 Patrositer und Kasluhiter sowie die Kaftoriter, von denen die Philister herkommen.* 15 Kanaans Söhne sind: Sidon, sein Erstgeborener, und Het, 16 außerdem stammen von ihm die Jebusiter, Amoriter, Girgaschiter, 17 Hiwiter, Arkiter, Siniter, 18 Arwaditer, Zemariter und Hamatiter. Die Sippen der Kanaaniter breiteten sich so stark aus, 19 dass ihr Gebiet von Sidon südwärts bis nach Gerar und Gaza reichte und ostwärts bis nach Sodom und Gomorra, Adma, Zebojim und Lescha. 20 Diese alle sind Nachkommen Hams. Sie wurden zu Völkern, von denen jedes nach Sippen geordnet in seinem Gebiet lebt und seine eigene Sprache hat. 21 Auch Sem, dem ältesten Bruder Jafets, wurden Kinder geboren. Von ihm stammen alle Nachkommen Ebers ab. 22 Sems Söhne sind: Elam, Assur, Arpachschad, Lud und Aram. 23 Von Aram stammen Uz, Hul, Geter und Masch. 24 Arpachschad zeugte Schelach, Schelach zeugte Eber. 25 Eber wurden zwei Söhne geboren. Der eine hieß Peleg (Teilung), denn zu seiner Zeit verteilte sich die Menschheit über die Erde; der andere hieß Joktan. 26 Die Söhne Joktans sind Almodad, Schelef, Hazarmawet, Jerach, 27 Hadoram, Usal, Dikla, 28 Obal, Abimaël, Saba, 29 Ofir, Hawila und Jobab. Sie alle sind Nachkommen Joktans. 30 Ihr Gebiet reicht von Mescha über Sefar bis an das Gebirge im Osten. 31 Diese alle sind Nachkommen Sems. Sie wurden zu Völkern, von denen jedes nach Sippen geordnet in seinem Gebiet lebt und seine eigene Sprache hat. 32 Alle diese Stämme und Völker sind Nachkommen der Söhne Noachs. Von den Söhnen Noachs stammen sie ab und haben sich nach der großen Flut über die ganze Erde ausgebreitet.
