1 Then the Lord said to Moses, ‘Leave this place, you and the people you brought up out of Egypt, and go up to the land I promised on oath to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, saying, “I will give it to your descendants.” 2 I will send an angel before you and drive out the Canaanites, Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites. 3 Go up to the land flowing with milk and honey. But I will not go with you, because you are a stiff-necked people and I might destroy you on the way.’ 4 When the people heard these distressing words, they began to mourn and no-one put on any ornaments. 5 For the Lord had said to Moses, ‘Tell the Israelites, “You are a stiff-necked people. If I were to go with you even for a moment, I might destroy you. Now take off your ornaments and I will decide what to do with you.” ’ 6 So the Israelites stripped off their ornaments at Mount Horeb.

The tent of meeting

7 Now Moses used to take a tent and pitch it outside the camp some distance away, calling it the ‘tent of meeting’. Anyone enquiring of the Lord would go to the tent of meeting outside the camp. 8 And whenever Moses went out to the tent, all the people rose and stood at the entrances to their tents, watching Moses until he entered the tent. 9 As Moses went into the tent, the pillar of cloud would come down and stay at the entrance, while the Lord spoke with Moses. 10 Whenever the people saw the pillar of cloud standing at the entrance to the tent, they all stood and worshipped, each at the entrance to their tent. 11 The Lord would speak to Moses face to face, as one speaks to a friend. Then Moses would return to the camp, but his young assistant Joshua son of Nun did not leave the tent.

Moses and the glory of the Lord

12 Moses said to the Lord, ‘You have been telling me, “Lead these people,” but you have not let me know whom you will send with me. You have said, “I know you by name and you have found favour with me.” 13 If you are pleased with me, teach me your ways so I may know you and continue to find favour with you. Remember that this nation is your people.’ 14 The Lord replied, ‘My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.’ 15 Then Moses said to him, ‘If your Presence does not go with us, do not send us up from here. 16 How will anyone know that you are pleased with me and with your people unless you go with us? What else will distinguish me and your people from all the other people on the face of the earth?’ 17 And the Lord said to Moses, ‘I will do the very thing you have asked, because I am pleased with you and I know you by name.’ 18 Then Moses said, ‘Now show me your glory.’ 19 And the Lord said, ‘I will cause all my goodness to pass in front of you, and I will proclaim my name, the Lord, in your presence. I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion. 20 But,’ he said, ‘you cannot see my face, for no-one may see me and live.’ 21 Then the Lord said, ‘There is a place near me where you may stand on a rock. 22 When my glory passes by, I will put you in a cleft in the rock and cover you with my hand until I have passed by. 23 Then I will remove my hand and you will see my back; but my face must not be seen.’

Die Israeliten suchen Gott gnädig zu stimmen

1 Der HERR sagte zu Mose: »Brecht jetzt auf! Bring das Volk, das du aus Ägypten hierher geführt hast, in das Land, das ich Abraham, Isaak und Jakob mit einem Eid als Besitz für ihre Nachkommen versprochen habe, 2 dieses Land, das von Milch und Honig überfließt! Ich werde einen Engel mitsenden, der vor euch hergeht, und werde die Völker im Land vor euch vertreiben, die Kanaaniter, Amoriter, Hetiter, Perisiter, Hiwiter und Jebusiter. Aber ich selbst werde nicht mit euch ziehen. Ihr seid ein widerspenstiges Volk und ich müsste euch deshalb unterwegs vernichten.« 4 Als die Leute das hörten, wurden sie traurig, und zum Zeichen ihrer Trauer legten alle ihren Schmuck ab. 5 Da sagte der HERR zu Mose: »Sag den Leuten von Israel: ›Ihr seid zwar ein widerspenstiges Volk, und wenn ich auf dem Weg ins Land auch nur einen Augenblick in eurer Mitte weilen würde, müsste ich euch vernichten. Aber wenn ihr jetzt euren Schmuck für immer ablegt, will ich sehen, was ich für euch tun kann.‹« 6 Da trennten sich die Leute von Israel noch am Berg Horeb von ihrem Schmuck.

Gott gewährt den Israeliten seine Nähe

7 Von da an schlug Mose jedes Mal, wenn das Volk Rast machte, außerhalb des Lagers ein Zelt auf. Er nannte es das Zelt der Begegnung mit Gott.* Wer von den Leuten im Volk eine Weisung oder Entscheidung des HERRN suchte, ging aus dem Lager hinaus zum Zelt der Begegnung. 8 Immer wenn Mose zu diesem Zelt ging, standen alle auf und traten an den Eingang ihrer Zelte. Sie blickten ihm nach, bis er ins Zelt hineingegangen war. 9 Sobald Mose hineinging, kam die Wolkensäule herab und blieb am Eingang des Zeltes stehen. Dann redete der HERR mit Mose. 10 Wenn die Leute von Israel die Wolkensäule über dem Zelt stehen sahen, warfen sich alle anbetend am Eingang ihrer Zelte nieder. 11 Der HERR sprach mit Mose Auge in Auge wie ein Mensch mit einem andern. Darauf kehrte Mose ins Lager zurück. Sein Diener Josua aber, der Sohn Nuns, damals noch ein junger Mann, blieb stets als Hüter im Zelt.

Mose bittet um Gottes Mitkommen

12 Mose sagte zum HERRN: »Du befiehlst mir: ›Führe das Volk in sein Land!‹, aber du hast mir nicht gesagt, wen du mitschicken wirst. Du hast mir versichert, dass ich in deiner Gunst stehe und dass du mich als deinen Vertrauten betrachtest. 13 Wenn ich wirklich in deiner Gunst stehe, dann bestätige es jetzt und sag mir, was du vorhast. Und bedenke doch, dass diese Leute dein Volk sind!« 14 Der HERR erwiderte: »Ich werde mitgehen,* du kannst ruhig sein.« 15 Mose sagte: »Wenn du nicht mitgehst, wäre es besser, du ließest uns hier bleiben. 16 Woran sollen wir denn erkennen, dass wir in deiner Gunst stehen, ich und dein Volk? Doch nur daran, dass du mit uns ziehst und uns dadurch vor allen anderen Bewohnern der Erde auszeichnest, nicht nur mich, sondern auch dein ganzes Volk!« 17 Der HERR antwortete: »Ich werde auch diese Bitte erfüllen, weil du in meiner Gunst stehst und mein Vertrauter bist.«

Mose möchte Gottes Herrlichkeit schauen

18 Nun bat Mose den HERRN: »Lass mich doch den Glanz deiner Herrlichkeit sehen!« 19 Der HERR erwiderte: »Ich werde in meiner ganzen Pracht und Hoheit an dir vorüberziehen und meinen Namen ›der HERR‹ vor dir ausrufen. Es liegt in meiner freien Entscheidung, wem ich meine Gnade erweise; es ist allein meine Sache, wem ich mein Erbarmen schenke. 20 Trotzdem darfst du mein Gesicht nicht sehen; denn niemand, der mich sieht, bleibt am Leben.« 21 Weiter sagte der HERR: »Hier auf dem Felsen neben mir kannst du stehen. 22 Wenn meine Herrlichkeit vorüberzieht, werde ich dich in einen Felsspalt stellen und dich mit meiner Hand bedecken, bis ich vorüber bin. 23 Dann werde ich meine Hand wegnehmen und du kannst mir nachschauen. Aber von vorn darf mich niemand sehen.«
