Laws of justice and mercy

1 ‘Do not spread false reports. Do not help a guilty person by being a malicious witness. 2 ‘Do not follow the crowd in doing wrong. When you give testimony in a lawsuit, do not pervert justice by siding with the crowd, 3 and do not show favouritism to a poor person in a lawsuit. 4 ‘If you come across your enemy’s ox or donkey wandering off, be sure to return it. 5 If you see the donkey of someone who hates you fallen down under its load, do not leave it there; be sure you help them with it. 6 ‘Do not deny justice to your poor people in their lawsuits. 7 Have nothing to do with a false charge and do not put an innocent or honest person to death, for I will not acquit the guilty. 8 ‘Do not accept a bribe, for a bribe blinds those who see and twists the words of the innocent. 9 ‘Do not oppress a foreigner; you yourselves know how it feels to be foreigners, because you were foreigners in Egypt.

Sabbath laws

10 ‘For six years you are to sow your fields and harvest the crops, 11 but during the seventh year let the land lie unploughed and unused. Then the poor among your people may get food from it, and the wild animals may eat what is left. Do the same with your vineyard and your olive grove. 12 ‘Six days do your work, but on the seventh day do not work, so that your ox and your donkey may rest, and so that the slave born in your household and the foreigner living among you may be refreshed. 13 ‘Be careful to do everything I have said to you. Do not invoke the names of other gods; do not let them be heard on your lips.

The three annual festivals

14 ‘Three times a year you are to celebrate a festival to me. 15 ‘Celebrate the Festival of Unleavened Bread; for seven days eat bread made without yeast, as I commanded you. Do this at the appointed time in the month of Aviv, for in that month you came out of Egypt. ‘No-one is to appear before me empty-handed. 16 ‘Celebrate the Festival of Harvest with the firstfruits of the crops you sow in your field. ‘Celebrate the Festival of Ingathering at the end of the year, when you gather in your crops from the field. 17 ‘Three times a year all the men are to appear before the Sovereign Lord. 18 ‘Do not offer the blood of a sacrifice to me along with anything containing yeast. ‘The fat of my festival offerings must not be kept until morning. 19 ‘Bring the best of the firstfruits of your soil to the house of the Lord your God. ‘Do not cook a young goat in its mother’s milk.

God’s angel to prepare the way

20 ‘See, I am sending an angel ahead of you to guard you along the way and to bring you to the place I have prepared. 21 Pay attention to him and listen to what he says. Do not rebel against him; he will not forgive your rebellion, since my Name is in him. 22 If you listen carefully to what he says and do all that I say, I will be an enemy to your enemies and will oppose those who oppose you. 23 My angel will go ahead of you and bring you into the land of the Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Canaanites, Hivites and Jebusites, and I will wipe them out. 24 Do not bow down before their gods or worship them or follow their practices. You must demolish them and break their sacred stones to pieces. 25 Worship the Lord your God, and his blessing will be on your food and water. I will take away disease from among you, 26 and none will miscarry or be barren in your land. I will give you a full life span. 27 ‘I will send my terror ahead of you and throw into confusion every nation you encounter. I will make all your enemies turn their backs and run. 28 I will send the hornet ahead of you to drive the Hivites, Canaanites and Hittites out of your way. 29 But I will not drive them out in a single year, because the land would become desolate and the wild animals too numerous for you. 30 Little by little I will drive them out before you, until you have increased enough to take possession of the land. 31 ‘I will establish your borders from the Red Sea* to the Mediterranean Sea,* and from the desert to the River Euphrates. I will give into your hands the people who live in the land, and you will drive them out before you. 32 Do not make a covenant with them or with their gods. 33 Do not let them live in your land or they will cause you to sin against me, because the worship of their gods will certainly be a snare to you.’

Gerechtigkeit und Mitmenschlichkeit

1 »Bring bei einem Gerichtsverfahren keine Gerüchte vor. Lass dich von jemand, der Unrecht getan hat, nicht für eine falsche Zeugenaussage gewinnen. 2 Schließ dich nicht der Mehrheit an, wenn sie auf der Seite des Unrechts steht. Musst du in einer Gerichtsverhandlung als Zeuge aussagen, so beuge dich nicht einer Mehrheit, die das Recht verdreht. 3 Du darfst aber auch nicht den Armen und Schwachen widerrechtlich begünstigen. 4 Wenn du siehst, dass ein Tier deines Feindes sich verlaufen hat, ein Rind oder ein Esel, dann bring es ihm ohne Zögern zurück! 5 Ist der Esel deines Feindes unter seiner Last zusammengebrochen und du kommst gerade dazu, so geh nicht weiter, sondern hilf ihm, das Tier wieder auf die Beine zu bringen. 6 Bei einem Gerichtsverfahren darfst du niemand sein Recht vorenthalten, nur weil er arm ist. 7 Verweigere deine Mitwirkung bei einem betrügerischen Prozess. Verurteile keinen Unschuldigen zum Tod; ein solches Unrecht lasse ich nicht durchgehen. 8 Nimm von den Prozessierenden keine Geschenke an; denn das trübt das Urteilsvermögen und verführt die ehrenwertesten Männer dazu, das Recht zu verdrehen. 9 Beutet die Fremden nicht aus, die bei euch leben. Ihr wisst doch, wie es einem Fremden zumute ist, weil ihr selbst in Ägypten als Fremde gelebt habt.«

Anweisungen für Sabbatruhe und Feiertage

10 »Sechs Jahre lang sollst du dein Land bearbeiten und den Ertrag ernten, den es dir bringt. 11 Aber im siebten Jahr lass es brachliegen. Was dann von selbst wächst, sollen die Armen essen, den Rest überlass dem Wild. Ebenso sollst du es mit deinen Weingärten und Ölbäumen halten. 12 Sechs Tage lang sollst du deine Arbeit verrichten, aber am siebten Tag sollst du alles ruhen lassen. Auch dein Rind und dein Esel sollen sich ausruhen; dein Sklave* und der Fremde, der bei dir lebt, sollen sich erholen können. 13 Richtet euch nach allem, was ich, der HERR, euch gesagt habe! Betet nicht zu anderen Göttern, erwähnt nicht einmal ihre Namen! 14 Dreimal im Jahr sollt ihr mir zu Ehren ein großes Fest feiern. 15 Haltet als erstes das Fest der Ungesäuerten Brote. Zur festgesetzten Zeit im Frühlingsmonat,* dem Monat eures Auszugs aus Ägypten, sollt ihr sieben Tage lang nur solches Brot essen, das ohne Sauerteig zubereitet ist, so wie ich es euch befohlen habe. Niemand soll mit leeren Händen zu meinem Heiligtum kommen. 16 Wenn die ganze Getreideernte eingebracht ist, sollt ihr das Pfingstfest feiern und im Herbst, wenn ihr die Früchte von euren Weinstöcken und Bäumen abgelesen habt, das Fest der Lese. 17 Dreimal im Jahr, zu diesen drei Festen, sollen alle Männer Israels zu mir, dem HERRN, an mein Heiligtum kommen. 18 Zum Blut eines Mahlopfers dürft ihr mir nicht Brot darbringen, das mit Sauerteig zubereitet ist. Das Fett des Opfertieres muss am selben Tag verbrannt werden; es darf nicht bis zum nächsten Morgen aufbewahrt werden. 19 Die erstgeernteten Früchte eurer Felder sollt ihr zum Haus des HERRN, eures Gottes, bringen. Ihr dürft ein Böcklein nicht in der Milch seiner Mutter kochen.«

Heilszusage und Warnung

20 Der HERR sagte: »Ich verspreche euch, ich werde einen Engel vor euch hersenden, der euch unterwegs beschützt und euch sicher in das Land bringt, das ich für euch bestimmt habe. 21 Haltet euch genau an seine Weisungen! Wenn ihr euch gegen ihn auflehnt, wird er euch das nicht vergeben, denn in seiner Person bin ich selbst mitten unter euch. 22 Wenn ihr ihm aufs Wort gehorcht und alles tut, was ich euch durch ihn sage, werde ich eure Feinde niederwerfen und jeden in die Enge treiben, der euch bedrängt. 23 Mein Engel geht vor euch her und bringt euch in das Land der Amoriter, Hetiter, Perisiter, Kanaaniter, Hiwiter und Jebusiter. Ich werde alle diese Völker vernichten. 24 Folgt nicht ihrem schlimmen Beispiel! Werft euch nicht vor ihren Göttern nieder, dient ihnen nicht! Stürzt ihre Götzenbilder um und zerschlagt ihre Steinmale. 25 Ehrt mich allein, den HERRN, euren Gott, dann werde ich dafür sorgen, dass es in eurem Land genug zu essen gibt und ihr reichlich Wasser habt. Ich werde auch alle Krankheiten von euch fern halten. 26 Es wird dann in eurem Land keine Frau geben, die eine Fehlgeburt hat oder kinderlos bleibt. Niemand wird vor der Zeit aus dem Leben gerissen werden. 27 Angst und Schrecken werde ich vor euch hersenden. Ich werde die Völker, zu denen ihr kommt, in Verwirrung stürzen; alle eure Feinde werden vor euch die Flucht ergreifen. 28 Panik werde ich vor euch her verbreiten* und so die Hiwiter, Kanaaniter und Hetiter vertreiben. 29 Allerdings werde ich sie nicht schon im ersten Jahr vollständig vertreiben, sonst bleiben weite Landstriche unbestellt und verwildern, und das Wild vermehrt sich so stark, dass ihr nicht mehr Herr darüber werdet. 30 Deshalb werde ich sie nur nach und nach vor euch vertreiben, in dem Maß, in dem ihr euch vermehrt und das Land in Besitz nehmen könnt. 31 Zuletzt aber werdet ihr ein Gebiet besitzen, das vom Roten Meer bis zum Mittelmeer und von der Wüste im Süden bis an den Eufrat reicht. Alle Bewohner dieses Landes gebe ich in eure Hand, sodass ihr sie vertreiben könnt. 32 Schließt keinen Bund mit ihnen und lasst euch nicht mit ihren Göttern ein. 33 Sie dürfen nicht mit euch zusammen in eurem Land leben, sonst werden sie euch dazu verleiten, mir untreu zu werden und ihre Götter zu verehren. Und das würde euch den Untergang bringen.«
