1And now, brothers and sisters, we want you to know about the grace that God has given the Macedonian churches.2In the midst of a very severe trial, their overflowing joy and their extreme poverty welled up in rich generosity.3For I testify that they gave as much as they were able, and even beyond their ability. Entirely on their own,4they urgently pleaded with us for the privilege of sharing in this service to the Lord’s people.5And they exceeded our expectations: they gave themselves first of all to the Lord, and then by the will of God also to us.6So we urged Titus, just as he had earlier made a beginning, to bring also to completion this act of grace on your part.7But since you excel in everything – in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness and in the love we have kindled in you* – see that you also excel in this grace of giving.8I am not commanding you, but I want to test the sincerity of your love by comparing it with the earnestness of others.9For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich.10And here is my judgment about what is best for you in this matter. Last year you were the first not only to give but also to have the desire to do so.11Now finish the work, so that your eager willingness to do it may be matched by your completion of it, according to your means.12For if the willingness is there, the gift is acceptable according to what one has, not according to what one does not have.13Our desire is not that others might be relieved while you are hard pressed, but that there might be equality.14At the present time your plenty will supply what they need, so that in turn their plenty will supply what you need. The goal is equality,15as it is written: ‘The one who gathered much did not have too much, and the one who gathered little did not have too little.’
Titus sent to receive the collection
16Thanks be to God, who put into the heart of Titus the same concern I have for you.17For Titus not only welcomed our appeal, but he is coming to you with much enthusiasm and on his own initiative.18And we are sending along with him the brother who is praised by all the churches for his service to the gospel.19What is more, he was chosen by the churches to accompany us as we carry the offering, which we administer in order to honour the Lord himself and to show our eagerness to help.20We want to avoid any criticism of the way we administer this liberal gift.21For we are taking pains to do what is right, not only in the eyes of the Lord but also in the eyes of man.22In addition, we are sending with them our brother who has often proved to us in many ways that he is zealous, and now even more so because of his great confidence in you.23As for Titus, he is my partner and fellow worker among you; as for our brothers, they are representatives of the churches and an honour to Christ.24Therefore show these men the proof of your love and the reason for our pride in you, so that the churches can see it.

1Ich will euch berichten, Brüder und Schwestern,* was Gottes Gnade in den Gemeinden in Mazedonien bewirkt hat.2Sie hatten viel zu leiden und haben es nicht nur standhaft ertragen; vielmehr wurde ihre Freude im Glauben nur umso stärker und führte trotz ihrer großen Armut zu einer erstaunlichen Hilfsbereitschaft.3Ihr könnt es mir glauben: Sie spendeten, soviel sie konnten, ja noch mehr, und sie taten es ohne Aufforderung.4Sie haben sich mir geradezu aufgedrängt und darum gebeten, sich an diesem Werk der Gnade Gottes beteiligen zu dürfen – an dieser Hilfeleistung, in der die Verbundenheit mit der Gemeinde in Jerusalem* zum Ausdruck kommt.5Sie taten dabei noch mehr, als ich gehofft hatte: Sie schenkten sich selbst, zuerst dem Herrn und dann, dem Willen Gottes gemäß, auch mir.6Deshalb habe ich Titus zugeredet, dass er sich bei euch um diese Sache kümmert. Er hat ja schon früher bei euch damit angefangen. Nun soll er euch helfen, dieses Werk der Gnade auch zu Ende zu bringen.7Ihr habt alles im Überfluss: Glauben, kraftvolles Wort, Erkenntnis, guten Willen und die gegenseitige Liebe, die ich euch vorgelebt und unter euch geweckt habe. Ich möchte, dass euer Beitrag zu diesem Gnadenwerk ebenso reich wird.8Ich gebe euch keinen Befehl. Ich sage euch nur, wie hilfsbereit andere sind, um euch dadurch anzuspornen. Ich möchte erproben, wie ernst es euch mit eurer Liebe ist.9Ihr wisst ja, was Jesus Christus, unser Herr, in seiner Liebe für euch getan hat. Er war reich und wurde für euch arm; denn er wollte euch durch seine Armut reich machen.10Ich gebe euch nur meinen Rat. Ich meine, es ist zu eurem eigenen Besten, dass ihr euch an der Sammlung beteiligt. Ihr habt euch ja schon im vorigen Jahr dazu entschlossen und habt auch schon damit angefangen.11Bringt das Begonnene jetzt zum guten Ende, damit die Ausführung nicht hinter dem Vorsatz zurückbleibt. Natürlich immer entsprechend dem, was ihr habt!12Wenn der gute Wille da ist, ist er willkommen mit dem, was jemand hat, nicht mit dem, was jemand nicht hat.13Ihr sollt nicht selbst Mangel leiden, damit andern geholfen wird. Vielmehr soll es zu einem Ausgleich kommen.14Im Augenblick habt ihr mehr als die andern. Darum ist es nur recht, dass ihr denen helft, die in Not sind. Wenn dann einmal ihr in Not seid und sie mehr haben als ihr, sollen sie euch helfen. So kommt es zu einem Ausgleich zwischen euch.15In den Heiligen Schriften heißt es: »Wer viel gesammelt hatte, hatte nicht zu viel, und wer wenig gesammelt hatte, hatte nicht zu wenig.«
Die Helfer bei der Sammlung
16Ich danke Gott dafür, dass er Titus den gleichen Eifer für euch ins Herz gegeben hat, den ich für euch habe.17Titus hat nicht nur meinen Vorschlag angenommen; er war noch viel eifriger und hatte schon von sich aus beschlossen, zu euch zu reisen.18Mit ihm schicke ich den Bruder, der wegen seines Wirkens für die Gute Nachricht bei allen Gemeinden in hohem Ansehen steht.19Und nicht nur das: Die Gemeinden haben ihn auch dazu bestimmt, mich zu begleiten, wenn ich diese Liebesgabe überbringe – die Gabe, die ich jetzt einsammle zur Ehre Gottes und zum Zeichen meines guten Willens.*20So soll vermieden werden, dass man mich verdächtigt, wenn ich eine so große Summe allein verwalte.21Es liegt mir daran, dass alles einwandfrei zugeht, nicht nur vor dem Herrn, sondern auch vor den Menschen.22Ich schicke noch einen anderen Bruder mit ihnen. Ich habe ihn oft erprobt, und jedes Mal war er sehr eifrig. Jetzt ist er noch viel eifriger als sonst, eine so hohe Meinung hat er von euch.23Titus ist mein Gefährte und mein Mitarbeiter im Dienst an euch. Die anderen Brüder kommen im Auftrag der Gemeinden und sind Menschen, die Christus Ehre machen.24Zeigt ihnen, dass eure Liebe echt ist, und beweist den anderen Gemeinden, dass ich euch zu Recht gelobt habe.
