1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and Timothy our brother, To the church of God in Corinth, together with all his holy people throughout Achaia: 2 Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Praise to the God of all comfort

3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, 4 who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God. 5 For just as we share abundantly in the sufferings of Christ, so also our comfort abounds through Christ. 6 If we are distressed, it is for your comfort and salvation; if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which produces in you patient endurance of the same sufferings we suffer. 7 And our hope for you is firm, because we know that just as you share in our sufferings, so also you share in our comfort. 8 We do not want you to be uninformed, brothers and sisters,* about the troubles we experienced in the province of Asia. We were under great pressure, far beyond our ability to endure, so that we despaired of life itself. 9 Indeed, we felt we had received the sentence of death. But this happened that we might not rely on ourselves but on God, who raises the dead. 10 He has delivered us from such a deadly peril, and he will deliver us again. On him we have set our hope that he will continue to deliver us, 11 as you help us by your prayers. Then many will give thanks on our behalf for the gracious favour granted us in answer to the prayers of many.

Paul’s change of plans

12 Now this is our boast: our conscience testifies that we have conducted ourselves in the world, and especially in our relations with you, with integrity* and godly sincerity. We have done so, relying not on worldly wisdom but on God’s grace. 13 For we do not write to you anything you cannot read or understand. And I hope that, 14 as you have understood us in part, you will come to understand fully that you can boast of us just as we will boast of you in the day of the Lord Jesus. 15 Because I was confident of this, I wanted to visit you first so that you might benefit twice. 16 I wanted to visit you on my way to Macedonia and to come back to you from Macedonia, and then to let you send me on my way to Judea. 17 Was I fickle when I intended to do this? Or do I make my plans in a worldly manner so that in the same breath I say both ‘Yes, yes’ and ‘No, no’? 18 But as surely as God is faithful, our message to you is not ‘Yes’ and ‘No’. 19 For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was preached among you by us – by me, Silas* and Timothy – was not ‘Yes’ and ‘No’, but in him it has always been ‘Yes’. 20 For no matter how many promises God has made, they are ‘Yes’ in Christ. And so through him the ‘Amen’ is spoken by us to the glory of God. 21 Now it is God who makes both us and you stand firm in Christ. He anointed us, 22 set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come. 23 I call God as my witness – and I stake my life on it – that it was in order to spare you that I did not return to Corinth. 24 Not that we lord it over your faith, but we work with you for your joy, because it is by faith you stand firm.

1 Paulus, Apostel von Jesus Christus nach dem Willen Gottes, und der Bruder Timotheus schreiben diesen Brief an die Gemeinde Gottes in Korinth und zugleich an alle Christen* in der Provinz Achaia. 2 Gnade und Frieden sei mit euch von Gott, unserem Vater, und von Jesus Christus, dem Herrn!

Paulus dankt Gott für Trost und Ermutigung

3 Gepriesen sei der Gott und Vater unseres Herrn Jesus Christus! Er ist ein Vater, dessen Erbarmen unerschöpflich ist, und ein Gott, der uns nie verzweifeln lässt. 4 Auch wenn ich* viel durchstehen muss, gibt er mir immer wieder Mut. Darum kann ich auch anderen Mut machen, die Ähnliches durchstehen müssen. Ich kann sie trösten und ermutigen, so wie Gott mich selbst getröstet und ermutigt hat. 5 Ich leide mit Christus und in seinem Dienst in reichem Maß. Aber ebenso reich sind der Trost und die Ermutigung, die mir durch ihn geschenkt werden. 6 Wenn ich leide, so geschieht es, damit ihr Mut bekommt und zur Rettung gelangt. Und wenn ich getröstet werde, so geschieht es, damit ihr den Mut bekommt, die gleichen Leiden wie ich geduldig zu ertragen. 7 Ich bin voller Zuversicht, wenn ich an euch denke; denn ich weiß: Wie ihr meine Leiden teilt, so habt ihr auch teil an dem Trost und der Ermutigung, die mir geschenkt werden. 8 Ihr sollt wissen, Brüder und Schwestern,* dass ich in der Provinz Asien in einer ausweglosen Lage war. Was ich zu ertragen hatte, war so schwer, dass es über meine Kraft ging. Ich hatte keine Hoffnung mehr, mit dem Leben davonzukommen, 9 ja, ich war ganz sicher, dass das Todesurteil über mich gesprochen war. Aber das geschah, damit ich nicht auf mich selbst vertraue, sondern mich allein auf Gott verlasse, der die Toten zum Leben erweckt. 10 Und er hat mich ja auch vor dem sicheren Tod gerettet – und wird es auch künftig tun. Ich setze die feste Hoffnung auf ihn: Er wird mich auch in Zukunft aus Todesgefahr retten. 11 Dazu helfen auch eure Gebete für mich, und aus vielen Herzen wird dann der Dank für meine gnädige Bewahrung vielstimmig zu Gott aufsteigen.

Warum Paulus nicht nach Korinth kam

12 Wenn ich mich mit etwas rühme, dann mit dem, was mir auch mein Gewissen bezeugt: Mein Verhalten überall in der Welt und besonders bei euch war stets bestimmt von völliger Ehrlichkeit und Selbstlosigkeit, wie es dem Willen Gottes entspricht. Ich ließ mich nicht von eigennütziger Klugheit leiten, sondern vom Wirken der Gnade Gottes. 13 Auch was ich in meinen Briefen schreibe, meine ich genau so, wie ihr es lesen und verstehen könnt. Ich hoffe, dass ihr es vollends ganz verstehen werdet. 14 Zum Teil habt ihr mich ja schon verstanden, nämlich dass ihr auf mich stolz sein dürft, so wie ich auf euch* – an dem Tag, an dem Jesus, unser Herr, kommt. 15 Im Vertrauen auf all das hatte ich den Plan gefasst, zuerst zu euch zu kommen,* damit ich euch zweimal besuchen und euch zweimal die Gnade Gottes bringen könnte. 16 Ich wollte über euch nach Mazedonien reisen und von dort wieder zu euch zurückkehren, damit ihr mich für die Reise nach Judäa mit allem Nötigen ausrüstet. 17 War ich leichtfertig, als ich mir das vorgenommen habe? Oder mache ich meine Pläne nach Menschenart, sodass mein Ja auch ein Nein sein kann? 18 Gott ist mein Zeuge: Kein Wort, das ich euch sage, ist Ja und Nein zugleich! 19 Denn Jesus Christus, der Sohn Gottes, den Silvanus, Timotheus und ich bei euch verkündet haben, war nicht Ja und Nein zugleich. In ihm ist das reine Ja Wirklichkeit geworden. 20 Mit ihm sagt Gott Ja zu allen seinen Zusagen. Von ihm gedrängt und ermächtigt sprechen wir darum auch das Amen zur Ehre Gottes. 21 Gott hat uns zusammen mit euch auf diesen festen Grund gestellt: auf Christus. Er hat uns gesalbt 22 und uns sein Siegel aufgedrückt.* Er hat seinen Geist in unser Herz gegeben als Anzahlung auf das ewige Leben, das er uns schenken will. 23 Ich rufe Gott als Zeugen an; er soll mich zur Rechenschaft ziehen, wenn ich nicht die Wahrheit sage! Nur um euch zu schonen, bin ich nicht wieder* nach Korinth gekommen. 24 Denn ich betrachte mich nicht als Richter über euren Glauben. Meine Aufgabe ist es doch, zu eurer Freude beizutragen! Im Glauben steht ihr ja fest.
